The Door That Breathes
The brass staple beats once inside Samurai's pocket. A door behind the Sun opens to the rhythm, and the convoy carries the battered service van toward a vault built of revolving filing cabinets and living aurorae.
SAMURAI: One second bought us a door.
FLANNEL TIGER: Does your insurance cover driving through the Sun?
SAMURAI: It barely covers potholes.
Panel-by-panel storyboard
PANEL 1
Full-height sliver of a doorway behind the Sun, outlined by amber flares; its frame expands and contracts like a chest.
THE SUN HAS A BACK DOOR. APPARENTLY IT TAKES SERVICE CALLS.
PANEL 2
Close on Samurai's flawless mirror-gold sphere reflecting the door and the 00:00:01 brass staple in his gloved palm.
SAMURAI: One second bought us a door.
PANEL 3
Flannel Tiger straps his hose to the white van as neon convoy drones tow it sideways through space.
FLANNEL TIGER: Does your insurance cover driving through the Sun?
SAMURAI: It barely covers potholes.
PANEL 4
Wide interior reveal: enormous oil-black mechanical heart surrounded by nine green-cyan aurora tubes, one flickering dark.

Paid in Full
The Pulse Auditor shows them the ledger. PAID IN FULL does not mean a planet is free—it means its living pulse has been transferred into the Collective's ownership.
PULSE AUDITOR: ALL LIVING RHYTHMS ARE COLLATERAL.
SAMURAI: You didn't pay it off. You paid yourselves.
FLANNEL TIGER: This is why I pay cash for everything.

Faceless Pulse Auditor unfolds from a towering glass filing cabinet; brass metronome arms orbit its body.
PULSE AUDITOR: ALL LIVING RHYTHMS ARE COLLATERAL.
PANEL 2
Nine illuminated receipt drawers, one labeled NACRE-9 / PAID IN FULL; its aurora tube turns colorless.
NINE WORLDS. NINE ACCOUNTS. ONE VERY BAD BOOKKEEPER.
PANEL 3
A tiny orb-like living planet on a suspended monitor loses its shimmering atmospheric ribbons as the Collective's city-hand gains a new finger-joint pulse.
SAMURAI: You didn't pay it off. You paid yourselves.
PANEL 4
Flannel Tiger squints at a huge invoice with a red stamp reading OWNERSHIP TRANSFERRED.
FLANNEL TIGER: This is why I pay cash for everything.

The Moths in the Ledger
A sensor escapes from the Auditor's ledger: Bellwether, six brass moths connected by static. It carries a record of the worlds' original pulses but cannot broadcast while the Collector owns the main beat.
BELLWETHER: ORIGINAL PULSES ARE NOT IDENTICAL. THE AUDITOR MADE THEM MARCH.
SAMURAI: That's a synchronization fault. I fix those for a living.
PULSE AUDITOR: UNSCHEDULED MAINTENANCE IS TRESPASS.
Panel-by-panel storyboard
PANEL 1
Six brass moths burst from a ledger seam linked by green lightning; none has a human face or body.
BELLWETHER: FORMER AUDIT SENSOR. CURRENTLY AN UNAUTHORIZED WITNESS.
PANEL 2
The moth cluster projects nine tiny unequal waveform loops; one loop has a gap shaped like a bite.
BELLWETHER: ORIGINAL PULSES ARE NOT IDENTICAL. THE AUDITOR MADE THEM MARCH.

Do Not Cut the Red Wire
The team finds the vault's emergency service hatch. Cutting the tubes would hurt the worlds. The two keys unlock a maintenance path, but the only service window lasts exactly one stolen second.
SAMURAI: Good news. The keys still work.
FLANNEL TIGER: One second? I need that long just to aim the hose.
SAMURAI: We cut the contract, not the customer.
Panel-by-panel storyboard
PANEL 1
Cross-section: nine softly throbbing organic aurora conduits thread through black iron ribs into the mechanical heart.
THE TUBES ARE ALIVE. THE METAL IS NOT.
PANEL 2
Samurai uses both recovered keys in opposite slots; a maintenance hatch opens one inch.
SAMURAI: Good news. The keys still work.
PANEL 3
The brass staple floats into a service timer: WINDOW OPEN — 00:00:01.
FLANNEL TIGER: One second? I need that long just to aim the hose.
PANEL 4
Close on the smoking yellow chainsaw held carefully away from the living conduits; its chain aligns with a dead-metal clamp.
SAMURAI: We cut the contract, not the customer.

An Offbeat for Nine Worlds
Vesper transmits through the convoy. Samurai wires his old server fan into a stereo oscillator; Bellwether stores the nine original pulse patterns. Flannel Tiger's water beads become reflective signal relays, but the Collector jams all steady rhythms.
VESPER: Don't fight the tempo. Give each world its own groove.
SAMURAI: Asynchronous maintenance. My specialty.
FLANNEL TIGER: I knew this hose was a scientific instrument.

PANEL 2
Samurai connects the rattling server fan to the stereo and service van PA; his gold head reflects nine distinct waveforms.
SAMURAI: Asynchronous maintenance. My specialty.
PANEL 3
Flannel Tiger sprays the hose, making suspended droplets that reflect nine different aurora colors.
FLANNEL TIGER: I knew this hose was a scientific instrument.
PANEL 4
The Auditor jams the central pulse; all nine waves flatten into one hard red line.
ONE BEAT. ONE OWNER. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The Unauthorized Heart Surgery
Samurai, Flannel Tiger, and Bellwether execute a one-second repair. The tiger's water droplets scatter the jammed signal while the chainsaw severs only the metal ownership clamp. Samurai is drenched, as usual.
SAMURAI: Service technician on site.
FLANNEL TIGER: HYDRATION IS A HUMAN RIGHT!
SAMURAI: You did that on purpose.
FLANNEL TIGER: Two things can be true.

Flannel Tiger hurls a colossal shimmering water arc into the Auditor's red beam; reflected auroras split into nine colors.
FLANNEL TIGER: HYDRATION IS A HUMAN RIGHT!
PANEL 3
Samurai's vintage yellow gasoline chainsaw slices through a giant stamped brass ownership clamp, not the glowing living tube.
KRRR-CHUNK!

A rebound water wave soaks Samurai's hibiscus shirt while his mirror head shows Flannel Tiger grinning.
SAMURAI: You did that on purpose.
FLANNEL TIGER: Two things can be true.

Nacre-9 Takes a Breath
Nacre-9's stolen pulse returns. Its atmosphere blossoms in violet and cyan. The city-hand recoils, but eight other worlds remain connected. Bellwether becomes an independent witness relay so the first world cannot be invoiced again.
BELLWETHER: ONE RELEASED. EIGHT STILL HELD.
VESPER: You just made the biggest remix in the solar system.
SAMURAI: Put it on my timesheet.
Panel-by-panel storyboard
PANEL 1
Splash: living planet Nacre-9 fills the frame, aurorae flaring in wild violet, turquoise, and amber; a metal hand withdraws.
ONE WORLD BREATHES AGAIN.
PANEL 2
Inset: nine indicator lights; NACRE-9 turns green / RELEASED, eight remain red / HELD.
BELLWETHER: ONE RELEASED. EIGHT STILL HELD.
PANEL 3
Inset: Vesper's jellyfish silhouette appears in the van windshield amid sparking convoy lights.
VESPER: You just made the biggest remix in the solar system.
PANEL 4
Inset: Samurai wipes water from his gold sphere, which reflects Nacre-9 as a tiny shining eye-like dot, not an actual eye.
SAMURAI: Put it on my timesheet.

A Signal in the Vinyl
The saved planet sends its original heartbeat as a radio groove. Vesper recognizes the pattern in a record at The Crater: the Archi-Collective has planted its next pulse collector inside the nightclub's sound system. The brass staple remains unpaid.
VESPER: That's not my track.
FLANNEL TIGER: We saved a planet. Dinner?
SAMURAI: Drive-through. Then the club.
Panel-by-panel storyboard
PANEL 1
Bellwether's six moths arrange around a waveform emerging from Nacre-9; the pattern resembles a vinyl record groove.
THE FREED WORLD SENDS A WARNING.
PANEL 2
At The Crater asteroid nightclub, Vesper Voltage freezes above her turntables as a black disc begins beating by itself.
VESPER: That's not my track.
PANEL 3
Back in the white van, Samurai pockets the 00:00:01 brass staple beside the two keys and starts the engine.
FLANNEL TIGER: We saved a planet. Dinner?
SAMURAI: Drive-through. Then the club.
PANEL 4
Final spiral: the nightclub's record needle becomes an Archi-Collective heartbeat probe pointing directly at Vesper.
