The Crater Is Listening

THE DANCE FLOOR IS A WITNESS.

Needle Drop

At The Crater, the black disc starts spinning without a DJ. Its needle is an Archi-Collective probe aimed at Vesper. Samurai and Flannel Tiger race the van back to the asteroid club.

VESPER: That is not my track.

FLANNEL TIGER: We are on the clock.

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

Macro view of a black vinyl disc spinning by itself; a segmented golden mechanical needle lowers like a stinger.

THE NEEDLE IS NOT A TOOL. IT'S A PROBE.

PANEL 2

Vesper Voltage, luminous blue-violet jellyfish DJ, stands beneath speaker cones opening into red camera-like irises.

VESPER: That is not my track.

PANEL 3

White battered utility van flies through the asteroid approach. Samurai drives, gold sphere smooth and featureless beneath bamboo hat; Flannel Tiger braces a coiled hose.

FLANNEL TIGER: We are on the clock.

PANEL 4

Wide reveal: The Crater's dance floor and entire asteroid structure resemble nested record grooves; a magenta signal descends to the core.

THE CRATER IS LISTENING.

Terms and Conditions of Dancing

The probe turns every sound made in the nightclub into a signed consent receipt. An alien crowd realizes applause, footsteps, even breath can be billed.

MANTIS PATRON: I DIDN'T SIGN ANYTHING!

COLLECTIVE: PARTICIPATION IMPLIES PERMISSION.

SAMURAI: I came to fix a sound system. Not a legal system.

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

Non-humanoid club patrons: chrome trap-drill mantises, bioluminescent goth jellyfish, chromatophore hustlers, translucent organ-filled brutes dance beneath neon signage.

WELCOME BACK TO THE CRATER.

PANEL 2

A floating receipt appears above a mantis's clicking claws: 'ONE CLAP = ONE CONSENT'.

MANTIS PATRON: I DIDN'T SIGN ANYTHING!

PANEL 3

The needle's cable winds through the ceiling into a city-shaped Archi-Collective surveillance node.

COLLECTIVE: PARTICIPATION IMPLIES PERMISSION.

PANEL 4

Samurai holds a maintenance ticket in front of a receipt printer, reflected perfectly in his mirror-gold head.

SAMURAI: I came to fix a sound system. Not a legal system.

PAGE 03 / 08

The Quiet Room Is Loud

Samurai cuts the speakers, but the crowd freezes: silence is interpreted as refusal and billed as a penalty. Bellwether's six brass moths detect a second channel hidden in the club's lighting.

SAMURAI: Everyone gets a free moment of quiet.

FLANNEL TIGER: They charge for NOT dancing?

BELLWETHER: THE LIGHTS CARRY A DIFFERENT SIGNAL.

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

Samurai pulls the audio breaker; loud jagged gutters collapse into dead straight black bars.

SAMURAI: Everyone gets a free moment of quiet.

PANEL 2

Dancers freeze midair in a glassy stasis field; a crimson sign reads 'NONPARTICIPATION FEE'.

FLANNEL TIGER: They charge for NOT dancing?

PANEL 3

Bellwether, six brass moths connected by green filament, crawls across a light fixture showing tiny coded pulses.

BELLWETHER: THE LIGHTS CARRY A DIFFERENT SIGNAL.

PANEL 4

Vesper sends cyan-magenta flashes through the convoy outside; the pulses trace the recovered Nacre-9 heartbeat.

THE FREED WORLD CAN STILL SPEAK.

Backstage Access Denied

Samurai uses his two recovered keys to enter the service passage under the stage. Flannel Tiger insists that a club with a water ban is an unconstitutional workplace.

SAMURAI: The record is alive. Don't cut it.

SAMURAI: We can disconnect the recorder without hurting it.

FLANNEL TIGER: This club is hostile to my culture.

COLLECTIVE: UNLICENSED RHYTHM DETECTED.

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

Cutaway of the stage: its turntable is a vast machine and beneath it lies a flexible, living listening membrane.

SAMURAI: The record is alive. Don't cut it.

PANEL 2

Two recovered keys open opposing maintenance sockets. A battered old server fan hums in Samurai's hand.

SAMURAI: We can disconnect the recorder without hurting it.

PANEL 3

Flannel Tiger reads a sign: 'NO HOSES ON THE DANCE FLOOR'; his hose is wrapped around his shoulders.

FLANNEL TIGER: This club is hostile to my culture.

PANEL 4

An Archi-Collective surveillance node lowers a steel shutter between Vesper and the exit.

COLLECTIVE: UNLICENSED RHYTHM DETECTED.

PAGE 05 / 08

A Needle for Every Heartbeat

The probe lunges at Vesper to copy her pulse and impersonate the freed Nacre-9. Samurai blocks with his bamboo hat while Bellwether exposes the false signature.

VESPER: You can't own a remix.

SAMURAI: You can't invoice a friend.

BELLWETHER: THE COPY HAS NO IMPERFECTIONS.

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

Giant metallic stylus dives at Vesper; she glows with bright blue defensive electricity.

VESPER: You can't own a remix.

PANEL 2

Samurai unfolds the bamboo rice hat as a shield; the needle sparks against woven ribs.

SAMURAI: You can't invoice a friend.

PANEL 3

Bellwether projects two different waveform spirals: Nacre-9's irregular living pulse and the Collective's perfectly repeated forgery.

BELLWETHER: THE COPY HAS NO IMPERFECTIONS.

PANEL 4

Close-up of the brass staple stamped 00:00:01 pulsing in Samurai's pocket, still unresolved.

THE UNPAID SECOND IS STILL OUT THERE.

PAGE 06 / 08

The Watermark

Vesper and Bellwether encode the genuine Nacre-9 pulse into visible light; Flannel Tiger's hose makes thousands of reflective droplets. Samurai severs only the steel recorder cable, not the living disc.

VESPER: No audio. Give me light and witnesses.

FLANNEL TIGER: I WAS BORN FOR THIS TECHNICAL ASSIGNMENT.

SAMURAI: Nobody signed. Nobody owes.

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

Vesper's tentacles form an iridescent light mixer; Bellwether's six moths orbit like musical notation.

VESPER: No audio. Give me light and witnesses.

PANEL 2

Flannel Tiger sprays a broad glittering water fan through the club; droplets reflect distinct silhouettes of dancers.

FLANNEL TIGER: I WAS BORN FOR THIS TECHNICAL ASSIGNMENT.

PANEL 3

Samurai's yellow 1950s chainsaw slices through a steel signal conduit high above the living vinyl membrane.

KRRR-CHAK!

PANEL 4

Receipts disintegrate as each droplet shows a different real attendee, impossible for the copied beat to impersonate.

SAMURAI: Nobody signed. Nobody owes.

PAGE 07 / 08

The Record Has a Heart

The surveillance node collapses. The living record reveals itself as a receiver, not the Collector: it carries messages from eight still-captive worlds. One signal from the Lantern Trench grows stronger.

BELLWETHER: NACRE-9 IS STILL FREE.

VESPER: That one is calling for help.

FLANNEL TIGER: Can we save them all?

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

Huge splash: The Crater's entire dance floor unfolds into a luminous map of eight distant, trapped living worlds.

EIGHT WORLDS ARE STILL HELD.

PANEL 2

A tiny inset of the recovered Nacre-9 pulse, freely rippling through a blue aurora outside the map.

BELLWETHER: NACRE-9 IS STILL FREE.

PANEL 3

One distant world, covered in luminous trench-like canyons, sends a jagged distress flash.

VESPER: That one is calling for help.

PANEL 4

Flannel Tiger looks at the cosmic map, his red-black flannel drenched; Samurai's smooth gold head reflects eight lights.

ONE SIGNAL. ONE NEXT STOP.

FLANNEL TIGER: Can we save them all?

PAGE 08 / 08

The Lantern Trench

The team stops the club's consent scam, but the Collector takes Vesper's spoken voice for one cycle as it retreats. Vesper can still communicate through light. The recovered map points to the Lantern Trench, where the next captive world is trapped.

COLLECTIVE: VOICE LICENSE SUSPENDED.

BELLWETHER: HER VOICE IS TEMPORARILY LOCKED. THE LIGHTS STILL WORK.

SAMURAI: Add 'restore DJ voice' to the work order.

Panel-by-panel storyboard

PANEL 1

The severed recorder cable retracts into a brass-black Archi-Collective node, which folds itself into a fleeing metal receipt.

COLLECTIVE: VOICE LICENSE SUSPENDED.

PANEL 2

Vesper tries to speak but only luminous cyan symbols emerge from her jellyfish bell; Bellwether translates.

BELLWETHER: HER VOICE IS TEMPORARILY LOCKED. THE LIGHTS STILL WORK.

PANEL 3

In the white utility van, Samurai sets both keys and the still-pulsing 00:00:01 staple beside his yellow chainsaw.

FLANNEL TIGER: And 'remove hose ban'.

SAMURAI: Add 'restore DJ voice' to the work order.

PANEL 4

Final wide cosmic image: the van and convoy follow a cyan light beam toward a dark planet with glowing trench canyons; eight captive world icons remain red.

NEXT: #010 — THE LANTERN TRENCH.
