2026-10-23 10:00 ET: The software and consumer names that rallied while semis broke (Oct 22)
Slot: Fri 2026-10-23, 10 AM ET (second hourly report; rotated away from the 9 AM semis report). Status: written ~10:20 ET. Updated ~10:30 ET with the research-partner (whiggity) consult (verified vs open; see the consult section near the end). Screening/research, not investment advice.
TRAI data used (pulled 2026-10-23 ~14:15 UTC): /api/latest premarket run 2026-10-22_premarket_2026-10-23T12-53-19-641Z (8:53 AM ET; daily stats = Oct 22 session; no newer run yet), /api/events (asOf 2026-10-23), /api/correlations (60-session window, asOf 2026-10-22), /api/regime (2026-10-22), /api/macro (2026-10-22), /api/scorecard (replay 2026-04-23 → 2026-10-21). All under https://rva.guru/trai. Intraday prints marked "Yahoo 10:14 ET" come from the public Yahoo chart API (5-minute bars, last bar 14:14 UTC on 2026-10-23; unofficial, may be delayed). TRAI uses the same feed.
1. Focus summary
- Earnings drove one of the four names. The other three moved on rotation. The Oct 22 software bounce in ADBE (+6.07%), INTU (+5.75%) and NOW (+2.53%) had no company earnings behind it. Benzinga: the rally "looks more like a sector rotation and rebound than a reaction to a major new announcement" (Benzinga, 2026-10-22). IBM is the exception. It reported Q3 on Oct 21 AMC, beat, and raised its software outlook. It still opened down about 4% and then rallied back to close +0.26% (TRAI /api/events; details in §3). NOW has not reported. Its Q3 is due Wed Oct 28 AMC (ServiceNow IR, 2026-10-07).
- Narrow rotation, not a software rally. IGV was −0.2% midday while ADBE and CRM rose (24/7 Wall St., 2026-10-22). In TRAI's "Software" sector the gainers were the application-software names: ADBE +6.07, INTU +5.75, CRM +3.52, WDAY +3.46, ZS +2.78, NOW +2.53, PANW +2.21. The AI-infrastructure-linked software names fell: ORCL −2.78, PLTR −2.74, SNOW −2.72, MSFT −2.23, DDOG −5.62 (TRAI /api/latest). Over 60 days, ADBE and INTU have negative average correlation to core semis (−0.38 and −0.41). ORCL is at +0.49 and sits inside the semis cluster (TRAI /api/correlations; §4).
- Housing/consumer (HD +4.33, LOW +3.97, TGT +3.76) was a rates trade. The 10y fell more than 17 bp to 4.972%, its first close below 5% since Sept 23 and the biggest one-day drop since March 10, 2023 (CNBC, 2026-10-22). HD had no company-specific news (Kalkine, 2026-10-23).
- This morning so far, the Oct 22 rotation is partly unwinding. At 10:14 ET: SMH +0.86%, IGV +0.54%, while ADBE −1.40%, NOW −0.83%, INTU −1.58%, CRM −1.77%, HD −2.71%, LOW −2.76%, TGT −2.82%, XHB −1.79%, IBM +0.02%. The 10y is 4.99% vs a 4.953% prior close (Yahoo 10:14 ET).
- Macro since 9:45 ET was hot on prices. S&P Global flash US PMI: manufacturing 56.0 vs 55.5 expected, services 57.9 vs 58.0 expected, composite 57.6 vs 58.4 prior. Selling prices rose at the sharpest rate since August 2022 (investingLive, 2026-10-23 09:45 ET). UMich final October sentiment came in at 48.0 (Sep 48.1). Buying conditions for durables "plunged 18% on the basis of higher interest rates." Year-ahead inflation expectations were 4.7% (from 4.6%) and long-run 3.5% (from 3.4%) (UMich Surveys of Consumers, 2026-10-23).

Sources: TRAI /api/latest (8:53 AM ET 2026-10-23), /api/events (asOf 2026-10-23), Yahoo chart API (10:14 ET). Engine cluster flags: "Software ×2" (ADBE, NOW) in long momentum; "Consumer Disc. ×3" (HD, AMZN, LOW) and "Consumer Staples ×3" (TGT, MO, PEP) in mean reversion. INTU has no flag even though it shares a correlation cluster with ADBE/NOW (§4, §8).
3. Company by company
ADBE (Adobe): rotation, plus a recent NVIDIA tie-up; no earnings
- Business: creative and document software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Acrobat), sold mainly as Creative Cloud / Document Cloud subscriptions, plus marketing/customer-experience software. It is adding generative AI through its Firefly models (Kalkine, 2026-10-22).
- Why it rose Oct 22: rotation "back into established enterprise software stocks and away from debt-heavy AI infrastructure companies" (Benzinga, 2026-10-22). Same-day news: Adobe was named Official AI Fan Experience Partner of the BWT Alpine F1 team. Kalkine says this was "not presented as a driver" (Kalkine, 2026-10-22). Background: on Oct 15 NVIDIA expanded its collaboration with Adobe to speed AI features in Photoshop and Premiere (24/7 Wall St., 2026-10-22). The stock has lagged this year on fears that generative AI tools displace its creative suite (same source). Close $270.55 (TRAI /api/latest).
- Last guidance (Q3 FY26, Sept 10): revenue $6.76B (+13%), non-GAAP EPS $6.13, ARR $27.50B. Q4 targets: revenue $6.80–6.85B, non-GAAP EPS $6.30–6.35. FY26 raised to revenue $26.576–26.626B and non-GAAP EPS $24.45–24.50, with ending-ARR growth of 10.2% (Adobe 8-K Ex. 99.1, SEC EDGAR, 2026-09-10). The release has an interim CFO (Steve Day). The CEO says he has "confidence that Anil will build on this momentum to drive Adobe's next chapter", which points to a leadership transition. Details not verified here.
- Sell-side into the move (Oct): HSBC cut to Hold, PT $310 → $267 (Oct 13). Wells Fargo cut to Sell, $270 → $225 (Oct 12). Goldman Sell, $200 (Oct 2). Bernstein Buy, $373 (Sep 15) (StockAnalysis/TipRanks ratings page, accessed 2026-10-23). No Oct 23 action found.
- Next earnings: 2026-12-09, timing unknown (TRAI /api/events). Typical earnings reaction (last 4): avg |gap| 4.58% (1.11 ATR), fill 50%, continuation 0%, avg day-1 in gap direction −1.91%. Three of the four gaps were down despite EPS beats (TRAI /api/events).
NOW (ServiceNow): AI-product momentum plus pre-earnings positioning; reports Oct 28
- Business: enterprise workflow platform (IT, CRM, security, employee service) that it now markets as an AI "control tower" for agents (ServiceNow IR, 2026-10-07).
- Why it rose Oct 22 (+2.53%, $157.00 close): sector rotation. MarketBeat also lists the NVIDIA/ServiceNow "Arc" agent launch and AI annual contract value above $1B (MarketBeat, 2026-10-22; aggregator, lower quality). Tech Trader Today says the stock is "up about 45% since its late-July results", citing an unnamed market report (Tech Trader Today, 2026-10-22). Not verified.
- Today's news (Oct 23): Guggenheim raised its PT to $175 from $125 (Buy). It cited field checks that "once again underwrite stability" and "what appears to be de-risked Q3 guidance", and expects upside to Q3 consensus with an in-line Q4 outlook (TheFly via TipRanks, 2026-10-23). The same page lists a Truist PT raise to $180 from $130 (date not shown).
- Guidance to be tested Oct 28 (set Jul 22): Q3 subscription revenue $3,975–3,980M (+20.5%, 20% cc), cRPO growth 19.5% (20% cc), non-GAAP operating margin 31%. FY26 subscription revenue $15,760–15,780M (+22.5%), FCF margin 35%. Q2 actuals: subscription $3,877M (+24.5%), RPO $29.0B, and AI above $1B ACV. Management said Q2 pulled some on-prem federal revenue forward from Q3 (ServiceNow Q2 release, 2026-07-22). Q3 consensus: unknown (not verified).
- Typical earnings reaction (last 4): avg |gap| 7.58% (1.62 ATR), max 15.35%, fill 50%, continuation 75%, avg day-1 in gap direction −0.71%. Gaps: Oct-25 +1.65%, Jan-26 −8.56%, Apr-26 −15.35%, Jul-26 +4.77% (then −8.07% day-1). The two large down-gaps came on EPS beats (TRAI /api/events). Window:
elevated(3 trading days) (TRAI /api/events).
IBM: reported Oct 21 AMC; beat and raised software outlook; gapped down, then fully recovered
- Business: Software (Red Hat hybrid cloud, automation, data, mainframe transaction processing), Consulting, and Infrastructure (IBM Z mainframes, distributed servers/storage) (IBM release, 2026-10-21).
- Q3 print: revenue $17.1B (+5%, +6% cc). Software $7.8B (+8%, +9% cc): Red Hat +11%, Data +19%, Transaction Processing +9%, Automation −3%. Consulting flat (+2% cc). Infrastructure +4%, with IBM Z −20% and Distributed +31%. Full-year cc revenue growth held at 4–5%. FCF growth raised to "more than $1 billion" y/y (same release). Software growth outlook raised to ~7–8% from 6–8%. Adjusted EPS $2.95 vs $2.86 estimate; revenue $17.10B vs $16.82B (LSEG) (Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-10-21). CFO: about two-thirds of the large deals that slipped from Q2 closed in Q3 (IBM 3Q26 transcript).
- Why it sold off at the open: −6.5% premarket Oct 22. BofA said about $250M of software growth came from deals pushed out of Q2. CEO Krishna expects Transaction Processing to "normalize" into next year. Bernstein sees TP dipping in Q4. Shares were down ~15% YTD before the print. At least 8 brokers raised PTs (Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-10-22 09:11 ET).
- Reaction record: gap −4.06% (−1.65 ATR), day-1 drift +4.50%, close-to-close +0.26%, gap filled (TRAI /api/events). The software rotation that afternoon plausibly helped (interpretation; not sourced). NOW–IBM ρ 0.58, ADBE–IBM 0.53 (TRAI /api/correlations). Typical (last 4): avg |gap| 5.35% (1.91 ATR), fill 50%, continuation 25%, avg day-1 in gap direction −2.17% (TRAI /api/events).
- Next earnings: unknown. TRAI has
next = null, which is the same calendar gap as WDC/NEM in the 9 AM report (S-008).
INTU (Intuit): rotation; no earnings until ~Nov 19
- Business: TurboTax, Credit Karma, QuickBooks / Global Business Solutions, Mailchimp. FY27 segment guide: GBS $13.07–13.16B (+13–14%), TurboTax $5.38–5.45B (+2–3%), Credit Karma $2.92–2.97B (+11–13%), Mailchimp −1% (Intuit Q4 FY26 release, 2026-08-25).
- Guidance: FY27 revenue $23.279–23.512B (+9–10%). Q1 FY27 revenue $4.294–4.313B, non-GAAP EPS $2.44–2.48 (same release). The guide came in below estimates. Shares fell about 12% on TurboTax customer losses over price (Quartz, 2026-08-26). TRAI recorded a gap of −9.51% (2026-08-25 AMC). Guidance was reaffirmed at the Sept 17 Investor Day per Quiver Quantitative, 2026-10-22 (secondary; not verified against IR).
- Why it rose Oct 22 (+5.75%, $354.90): sector move "rather than company-specific news" (AlphaStreet, 2026-10-22). Recent items: the Sequence acquisition (AI revenue-management, announced Oct 15 per Quiver) and an Intuit Ventures investment in Coast (Intuit blog, 2026-10-22). Neither is material on its face.
- Next earnings: Intuit IR says "Q1/FY27 Earnings date will be announced at the end of the quarter" (Intuit IR calendar, accessed 2026-10-23). TRAI holds an estimate of 2026-11-19. Typical (last 4): avg |gap| 8.92% (2.16 ATR), max 18.66%, fill 25%, continuation 25% (TRAI /api/events).
4. Sector linkages: who moves together and why (TRAI /api/correlations, 60 sessions to 2026-10-22)
- Application-software cluster 6 (avg ρ 0.626): WDAY, ADBE, INTU, TEAM, CRM, NOW. Tightest pairs: ADBE–INTU 0.79, ADBE–NOW 0.78, NOW–CRM 0.75, ADBE–WDAY 0.71. IBM is a singleton (cluster 33), but its highest correlations are NOW 0.58, CRM 0.54 and ADBE 0.53. It trades like application software, not like TRAI's "Hardware" label.
- This cluster is the semis hedge. Average ρ to the core-semis basket (NVDA, AMD, AVGO, MU, TSM, ASML, AMAT, LRCX, KLAC): INTU −0.41, ADBE −0.38, WDAY −0.23, NOW −0.22, CRM −0.17, IBM −0.03. Other names labeled "Software" sit elsewhere. ORCL +0.49 is in semis cluster 1. MSFT +0.33 (cluster 36). PLTR, DDOG, NET, ZS, PANW and CRWD form security/data cluster 5 (avg ρ 0.633). SNOW pairs with TSLA (cluster 17). TRAI's "Software" label therefore mixes three different factor exposures. Oct 22 split exactly along those lines (§1).
- Why: when worries about the cost and payback of AI infrastructure dominate, "companies that sell software to customers, rather than building or supplying data centers, can look more attractive by comparison" (Kalkine, 2026-10-22). The same group had been sold this year on fears that AI displaces seat-based software (24/7 Wall St., 2026-10-22).
- Same-cluster catalyst ahead: NOW reports 10-28 AMC, the same evening as MSFT and GOOGL and the FOMC decision day (9 AM report, whiggity item 5). Other cluster-6 names have no reports in the 5-day window: CRM est. 12-02, ADBE 12-09, INTU est. 11-19 (TRAI /api/events). A big NOW gap is a read-through for ADBE/CRM/WDAY/INTU at ρ 0.67–0.78 (S-004).
- Consumer/housing: HD–LOW ρ 0.92 (cluster 12 with MCD, avg 0.65). TGT is a singleton (cluster 57); its top links are NKE 0.50, BX 0.50 and PG/PEP 0.45. TGT–WMT is only 0.24. HD–AMZN ρ 0.00 and LOW–AMZN −0.10, yet the engine's sector flag groups HD, AMZN and LOW as "Consumer Disc. ×3" (TRAI /api/latest). The flag over-counts here, where in the semis case it under-counted (S-001).
5. HD / LOW / TGT: the defensive and rates move (short section)
- Driver: the Treasury rally. 10y −17 bp to 4.972%, 2y −16 bp to 4.659%, on safe-haven buying amid the tech selloff, Middle East risk and higher oil (CNBC, 2026-10-22). Homebuilders (LEN, PHM, DHI) also rallied. Freddie Mac's weekly 30-year mortgage rate edged lower. Initial claims came in at 194K vs 200K expected. About two-thirds of S&P 500 stocks rose. Staples and health care hit records (Kalkine, 2026-10-23; aggregator, numbers not cross-checked against the Freddie Mac/DOL originals). TGT's gain is described as part of the broader consumer rally. No TGT-specific catalyst found.
- Businesses: HD and LOW are home-improvement retailers. Their big-ticket remodeling demand is sensitive to mortgage rates (same Kalkine source). TGT is a general-merchandise retailer (TRAI labels it Consumer Staples).
- Why it matters today: the driver reversed at 9:45–10:00 ET. The PMI showed the sharpest selling-price rise since Aug 2022, and UMich durables buying conditions fell 18% "on the basis of higher interest rates", with inflation expectations up at both horizons (sources in §1). The 10y is back to ~4.99% and XHB is −1.79% (Yahoo 10:14 ET). Kalkine notes markets price "roughly one more hike before year-end" (unverified).
- Next earnings: HD 11-17 BMO, LOW 11-18 BMO, TGT 11-18 BMO. All are outside the 5-day window (TRAI /api/events). Typical (last 4): HD avg |gap| 2.81% (1.22 ATR), LOW 2.96% (1.24 ATR), TGT 3.37% (1.20 ATR); fill rate 50% each (TRAI /api/events).
6. Earnings, guidance, filings and macro in the last hour (since ~9:00 ET)
- NOW: Guggenheim PT $125 → $175, Buy (above). This is the only new item found on the four focus names this morning. No Oct 23 rating actions found for ADBE, INTU or IBM (StockAnalysis ADBE ratings, accessed 2026-10-23; IBM/INTU searches returned none). No 8-Ks were checked on EDGAR this hour. Status: unknown.
- BMO reporters today (TRAI /api/events): only AXP and SLB (
imminent), both covered at 9 AM. Neither is in the software or housing clusters. 60-day ρ is low: AXP vs focus names 0.13–0.38 (highest IBM and INTU 0.38, HD 0.34); SLB vs focus names −0.14 to 0.15 (TRAI /api/correlations). There is no meaningful peer-event read-through. - Macro: flash PMI (9:45) and UMich final (10:00) as in §1. Broad tape: Dow −1%, S&P −0.4%, Nasdaq −0.3%, 10y below 5%, Brent near $110, WTI near $101 (Yahoo Finance live, 2026-10-23 ~9:34 ET). The Yahoo chart API shows the 10y at 4.99% by 10:14 ET. Next scheduled: FOMC Oct 27–28, GDP + PCE Oct 29, ECI Oct 30 (9 AM report).
7. TRAI scorecard context (replay 2026-04-23 → 2026-10-21, next-open→close, net of costs; TRAI /api/scorecard)
Today: VIX transitional, quant neutral, trend choppy (TRAI /api/regime 2026-10-22).
- Long momentum: all n = 385, mean +0.13%, t 0.82. Transitional n = 303, +0.10%, t 0.53. Quant-neutral n = 65, hit 41.5%, mean −0.31%, t −0.90. Choppy n = 141, +0.09%, t 0.38. No edge in today's cells.
- Mean-reversion fade-short: all n = 322, hit 53.1%, +0.10%, t 0.77. Transitional n = 263, hit 48.3%, −0.05%, t −0.34. Choppy n = 118, hit 56.8%, +0.33%, t 1.42. Neutral n = 76, +0.10%, t 0.37. Weak and not significant either way.
- Per-name replay trades (tiny n; illustration only): NOW long-momentum n = 6, mean −0.96%. IBM long-momentum n = 6, mean −0.68%; its latest, signal 10-21, was +4.50%. ADBE long-momentum n = 4, mean −0.14% (computed from /api/scorecard replayTrades).
8. ACTIONABLE for today (Fri 2026-10-23): screening notes, not advice
Strict read: no new company-specific catalyst today changes gap risk on any candidate. None of the seven names reports today, and TRAI holds nothing overnight. What does matter today:
- Cross-bucket conflict inside cluster 6. ADBE (long momentum) and INTU (fade-short) are ρ 0.79 apart, and NOW–INTU is 0.67. Taking ADBE long and INTU short is mostly a spread trade on noise, and each leg pays costs. The engine's clusterFlag is computed per bucket, so it doesn't flag this (INTU shows no flag). Take at most one side of cluster 6 (S-003). Cap the long side at one name of ADBE/NOW, since they are ρ 0.78 and flagged "Software ×2".
- The app-software longs are a short-semis factor bet. ADBE and NOW correlate −0.38 and −0.22 with core semis. A long in ADBE/NOW alongside a semis fade-long (AMD, NVDA, etc. from the 9 AM list) largely cancels. This morning confirms it: SMH +0.86% vs ADBE −1.40%, NOW −0.83% at 10:14 ET.
- HD/LOW/TGT fade-shorts: the driver has reversed. Note it, but don't chase. Their Oct 22 rally was a yields move, and the 9:45/10:00 prints pushed yields back up. All three are already −2.7% to −2.8% by 10:14 ET, or about 1.1–1.2 ATR (HD ATR 2.18%, LOW 2.43%, TGT 2.58%). Any entry after 10:00 starts after more than a 1-ATR move, against a 2-ATR target. HD–LOW ρ 0.92 means they count as one position. AMZN should not be counted in their cluster (ρ ≈ 0). Replay shows no fade-short edge in transitional regimes (t −0.34).
- NOW (long momentum) has earnings in 3 trading days (10-28 AMC, `elevated`). No overnight holds, so there is no direct gap exposure today. A pre-earnings PT raise (Guggenheim) and a 7.6% average earnings gap make the stock headline-driven this week. Treat intraday signals with normal sizing only.
- IBM long momentum is a day-2-after-earnings signal, and TRAI's calendar has no next date for it. S-005 applies (no drift premium). IBM's history shows continuation 25% and day-1 in gap direction −2.17%. Its "Hardware" label hides its software-cluster correlations (NOW 0.58).
9. Unknowns / to verify
- NOW Q3 consensus (revenue, EPS, cRPO). The truncated MarketBeat snippet mentions "a possible single-digit earnings decline" (unverified).
- ADBE leadership transition ("Anil" named in the Q3 release). Name, role and timing not verified here.
- Intuit Investor Day (Sept 17) guidance reaffirmation: seen only in Quiver's summary.
- Freddie Mac mortgage-rate and jobless-claims figures: taken from an aggregator (Kalkine), not the primary releases.
- IBM's next earnings date (not on TRAI's calendar).
- Any 8-K filed this morning by the focus names (EDGAR not checked this hour).
Research-partner (whiggity) consult
_Consulted 2026-10-23 ~10:15–10:20 ET (Monica research bot "whiggity", new chat "Semiconductor Selloff and Sector Rotation Research"; Monica showed two transient errors mid-research and recovered). Folded in ~10:30 ET. whiggity is treated as a second researcher, not a source of truth. Every whiggity claim below is tagged [whiggity]. It counts as fact only where I fetched a public source or checked TRAI data myself; everything else is an open question. whiggity gave no dates for its sources, so the dates below are the ones on the pages. Intraday checks marked "Yahoo 10:25 ET" come from the public Yahoo chart API (5-minute bars, last bar 14:25 UTC)._
Where whiggity conflicts with this report
- [whiggity] "IBM boosted software" (software $7.80B, +8%, beat the Street) as a driver of the software bid. The numbers are VERIFIED. CNBC: adjusted EPS $2.95 vs $2.86 and revenue $17.10B vs $16.82B (LSEG). Software $7.80B (+8%) beat the $7.66B StreetAccount consensus. Consulting was $5.34B (flat), just under the $5.37B consensus. Adjusted gross margin was 58.5% vs 59.1% expected, and shares "slipped in extended trading" (CNBC, 2026-10-21). The framing conflicts with the tape. IBM itself gapped −4.06% on Oct 22 after BofA's slipped-deals comment (§3). On the call, the CFO said "about a quarter" of the software acceleration was slip deals, and the CEO said "I do not expect double-digit performance in TP to keep going", with "perhaps a moderation from 3Q going into the fourth quarter" (Motley Fool transcript, 2026-10-21). Read: the print beat, but the market discounted its software quality at the open. An "IBM read-through lifted app software" story is plausible only for the afternoon (IBM ρ to NOW 0.58), and no source states it. A more sourced IBM link to Oct 22 is Krishna's line that enterprises "are also getting worried if some of the AI spending [is] completely out of control with no real return" (same transcript; quoted by Kalkine, 2026-10-23). That line feeds the AI-ROI narrative behind the chips→software rotation.
- [whiggity] ADBE was driven by a creative-AI feature rollout. NOT SUPPORTED; keep "rotation, no company news." whiggity's source, Kalkine Media, "stock climbs as creative AI feature rollout expands today", is timestamped Oct 22, 03:16 AM PDT, before the open. It names no dated announcement ("Coverage described more than one hundred new AI-driven features"), and it ties the rollout to "the company's flagship creativity conference". Adobe MAX 2026 is Nov 10–12 (max.adobe.com), so that conference hasn't happened yet. The page looks like generic, templated copy. Benzinga ("more like a sector rotation and rebound than a reaction to a major new announcement"), Kalkine.com (the BWT Alpine F1 tie-up "was not presented as a driver") and AlphaStreet for INTU ("rather than company-specific news") all say rotation (§3). New catalyst to log instead: Adobe MAX Nov 10–12 is a dated product event before the Dec 9 print.
- [whiggity] Yahoo source for the WDAY/ADBE/INTU/ADSK/CRM basket. The link is a Stocktwits piece dated Aug 3, 2026 about July 2026, not Oct 22. It does say that in July "investors taking profits in high-flying chip stocks and rotating into beaten-down software names" sent WDAY +31%, ADBE +22.1%, INTU +21.6%, ADSK +20.4% and CRM +17.5% (MSFT +24.6%, IGV +4.4%) (Yahoo Finance/Stocktwits, 2026-08-03). It is useful as a precedent for the same chips→app-software rotation. It is not evidence about Oct 22.
- [whiggity] Catalyst calendar. Mostly right, with corrections (TRAI /api/events, asOf 2026-10-23). Correct: MSFT and GOOGL 10-28 AMC, AMZN 10-29 AMC, ADBE mid-Dec (TRAI 12-09), INTU mid/late Nov (TRAI est. 11-19; Intuit hasn't announced it). Wrong: META already reported (10-21 AMC; see the 9 AM report). The FOMC is Oct 27–28, not early November (9 AM report, Fed calendar). Peers: TEAM reports 11-05 AMC (TRAI). WDAY has
next = nullin TRAI (calendar gap, S-008). HUBS is not in TRAI's universe. Jobs/ISM dates were not checked. - [whiggity] The test idea "SOXX < −5% and IGV > +2%" does not describe Oct 22. IGV closed −0.09% on Oct 22 with SOXX −6.79% (Yahoo daily bars). The rally was a single-name dispersion inside app software, not an IGV-level one (24/7 Wall St. likewise had IGV −0.2% midday, §1). Any backtest has to define the event on an app-software basket or on IGV − SOXX, or it will miss days like this one (see hypothesis 1 below).
Verified
- [whiggity] NOW Q3 on Wed Oct 28 AMC. VERIFIED (ServiceNow IR, 2026-10-07; TRAI /api/events).
- [whiggity] IBM early-Nov dividend cycle. VERIFIED, not material intraday. The board approved $1.69/share, record date Nov 10, payable Dec 10 (IBM release, 2026-10-21). MarketBeat gives the ex-date as Nov 10 (MarketBeat, 2026-10-22). The ex-date gap is about $1.69 (~0.7%), so that open shouldn't be read as a signal.
- [whiggity] Counter-evidence (b): the HD/LOW/TGT bid was macro/duration, not software optimism. VERIFIED, and it matches §5 (CNBC 10y −17 bp, no HD-specific news per Kalkine). This morning it reversed: HD −2.85%, LOW −2.94%, TGT −3.00% with the 10y at ~4.99% (Yahoo 10:25 ET).
- [whiggity] CRM/WDAY basket with ADBE/INTU. SUPPORTED by TRAI. All are in cluster 6. ADBE–WDAY 0.71, ADBE–CRM 0.67, INTU–WDAY 0.67, INTU–CRM 0.51 (TRAI /api/correlations, 60d to 2026-10-22). ADSK is not in TRAI's universe, so its link is backed only by the July precedent above.
- [whiggity] NOW with TEAM. SUPPORTED: ρ 0.71, same cluster 6 (TRAI /api/correlations).
Partly verified
- [whiggity] Counter-evidence (a): pod degrossing of a crowded long-semis/short-SaaS pair, which "often fades in 3–5 sessions." Deleveraging is sourced. Per Goldman prime brokerage, all three major hedge-fund strategies lost more than 1% on Oct 22 (a first since COVID). "Losses in crowded AI-linked trades forced investors to cut exposure", and fundamental L/S October performance was hurt partly by "a squeeze in crowded short positions" (Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-10-23). No source names a long-semis/short-SaaS pair or software short covering specifically, and the 3–5-session fade is whiggity's claim alone (open). Day-1 evidence fits a fade: at 10:25 ET, ADBE −2.35%, INTU −2.68%, CRM −2.62%, NOW −1.50%, while IGV +0.22% and SMH +0.75% (Yahoo 10:25 ET). That is one morning.
- [whiggity] Counter-evidence (d): the biggest gains came in the beaten-down laggards (ADBE, INTU), not the fundamental leaders (NOW, IBM), a mean-reversion signature. The ordering is verified (ADBE +6.07, INTU +5.75 vs NOW +2.53, IBM +0.26; TRAI /api/latest). "Beaten-down" is sourced (Kalkine, 24/7 Wall St., §3). "Most-shorted" is not verified: no short-interest data was checked.
- [whiggity] NOW consensus EPS ~$0.93 (Public.com). The page says it; UNVERIFIED as Street consensus. Public.com lists Q3 2026 est. EPS $0.93 and doesn't name its data provider (Public.com, accessed 2026-10-23). Its history doesn't match the Yahoo consensus TRAI stores. Actual EPS matches, but Public's estimates are lower: Q2 $0.76 vs $0.857 (Yahoo), Q1 $0.80 vs $0.967, Q4 $0.72 vs $0.885 (TRAI /api/events). So Public shows NOW "beating" by 18–38%, while TRAI's surprises are 0.4–13%. Don't use $0.93 as the bar. NOW revenue/cRPO consensus is still unknown (§9).
Not verified (open questions)
- [whiggity] ADBE short covering / long-semis-short-SaaS pair unwind as ADBE's specific driver. No source (see (a) above).
- [whiggity] NOW: pre-earnings positioning plus IBM read-through. No source for either. NOW–IBM ρ 0.58 makes it plausible. Guggenheim's Oct 23 PT raise (§3) is the only dated NOW item.
- [whiggity] INTU moved with the SaaS basket. Consistent with AlphaStreet (§3) and TRAI ρ. Nothing beyond that.
- [whiggity] NOW with MSFT. NOT supported by TRAI: NOW–MSFT ρ 0.12 (60d). Their shared Oct 28 AMC date is a same-evening catalyst link (S-010 style), not a return co-movement link.
- [whiggity] IBM with ACN/ORCL. NOT supported / unverified. IBM–ORCL ρ 0.15; ORCL trades with semis (cluster 1). ACN is not in TRAI's universe. IBM's real co-movers are NOW 0.58, CRM 0.54, ADBE 0.53.
- [whiggity] HD/LOW with SHW/TSCO/WMT as yield/duration proxies. SHW and TSCO are not in TRAI's universe. WMT links are weak: HD–WMT 0.41, LOW–WMT 0.33, TGT–WMT 0.24 (TRAI /api/correlations). Unverified as a sympathy basket.
- [whiggity] Counter-evidence (c): if hyperscaler capex slows because AI ROI is weak, software AI pricing power suffers. This is reasoning, not data. It gets tested by MSFT/GOOGL (10-28) and AMZN (10-29) capex commentary.
whiggity's testable hypotheses (status; proposals in strategy.md)
- [whiggity] Dispersion day (SOXX < −5%, IGV > +2%): t+1/t+2/t+5 returns of the software winners; claim that degrossing continues into the t+1 open and then reverses by ~11 AM ET. Quick check (mine, Yahoo daily bars 2010-01 → 2026-10-22, not TRAI's engine). The literal rule has only n = 3 (2026-06-26, 07-01, 09-14), and Oct 22 does not qualify. Loosened to SOXX < −4% and IGV − SOXX > 5 pp: n = 16 (Oct 22 excluded as incomplete; 13 of the 16 days are in 2026, so this is one regime with overlapping samples). Next-day gap mean: IGV −0.27%, ADBE −0.58%, INTU −0.62%, CRM −0.67%, NOW −0.73% (down in 10–12 of 16). Next-day open→close mean: IGV +1.05% (hit 81%, t 3.4), NOW +1.50% (t 3.2), CRM +0.93% (t 2.1), INTU +0.99% (t 1.7), ADBE +0.77% (t 1.5). Daily bars point the opposite way from whiggity's claim: the software winners gave back at the open, then recovered intraday. The 11 AM reversal can't be tested without intraday bars. Today breaks that pattern so far: gap down, then further weakness into 10:25 ET. Status: NEEDS DATA. See S-015.
- [whiggity] Regime A (IGV > SOXX, defensives flat) vs Regime B (IGV and HD/LOW/TGT each beat SPY by > 2.5% while SOXX < −4%): momentum vs fade Sharpe, controlling for the 10y change. Oct 22 is not cleanly either. HD/LOW/TGT beat SPY by ~5 pp (S&P −1.21%, Kalkine), but IGV beat it by only ~1.1 pp. With an app-software basket in place of IGV it is Regime B. The 10y control is right: today's reversal in both groups came with yields rebounding (§1). Status: NEEDS DATA. See S-016.
- [whiggity] Intraday lead-lag: SOXX volume spikes vs ADBE/INTU/CRM buying; if > 45% of the software gain came in the last hour with MOC imbalances, fade the t+1 morning VWAP breach. No intraday or MOC data checked. The "45%" threshold is whiggity's own and unsourced. Status: open; folded into S-015 as an intraday extension.
- [whiggity] NOW pre-earnings sympathy drift from T-4/T-5 to T-0 after a > 2% rotation-day rally, and whether it skews the post-earnings T+1 negative. Oct 22 (+2.53%) is T-4 for the Oct 28 AMC print. NOW's last 4 prints had a 75% gap-continuation rate but day-1 −0.71% in the gap direction, with two large down-gaps on EPS beats (TRAI /api/events). TRAI holds nothing overnight, so this mainly matters for intraday sizing in the run-up. Status: NEEDS DATA. See S-017.
Net changes to the actionable list (§8)
- No change: still nothing actionable today. Nothing whiggity raised changes gap risk on a candidate today. It reinforces the existing calls:
- §8.1–8.2: don't treat ADBE's move as company-catalyst momentum. The "creative-AI rollout" catalyst is not supported, and the rotation is unwinding (ADBE −2.35% at 10:25 ET while SMH is up). The long-momentum case for ADBE is weaker than at 10:00.
- §8.3: HD/LOW/TGT are now −2.85% to −3.00%, about 1.2–1.3 ATR (HD 1.31, LOW 1.21, TGT 1.16), with the 10y back near 4.99%. The fade has already happened; S-013 says skip.
- §8.4 (NOW): the Public.com $0.93 "consensus" is not a usable bar. Read-throughs from NOW's Oct 28 print go to TEAM/ADBE/CRM/WDAY/INTU (ρ 0.67–0.78), not MSFT (0.12).
- §8.5 (IBM): IBM's peer set is app software, not ACN/ORCL. The Nov 10 ex-dividend date is mechanical.
