2026-10-30 09:00 ET: Premarket rotation (INTC/PC-hardware and crypto gap-downs vs. healthcare/staples/energy bid), BMO prints (REGN, ABBV, XOM, CVX), ECI, and gap check on TRAI's candidates

Slot: Fri 2026-10-30 09:00 ET hourly research. Status: final, ~09:00–09:50 ET; second researcher (whiggity) consulted, see §11. Screening/research, not investment advice.
TRAI data used:

  • /api/latest premarket run 2026-10-29_premarket_2026-10-30T12-53-19-775Z (8:53 AM ET; regime transitional, VIX 18.59 (+1.39), VIX9D 15.87, risk/trade 0.25%).
  • /api/events (generated 2026-10-30 12:17 UTC).
  • /api/correlations (60d to 2026-10-22, still stale, S-068). /api/regime, /api/macro asOf 2026-10-22 (stale too).
  • /api/scorecard asOf 10-22.

Premarket quotes: Yahoo chart API 5-min bars incl. pre-market, pulled ~09:12 ET, measured vs TRAI's 10-29 close. Thin and still moving.
Previous slot: 17:00 report covered the 10-29 movers' catalysts and Thursday AMC prints. This hour does not re-do those catalysts; it covers what changed overnight/premarket: BMO prints, ECI, the INTC→PC-hardware read-through, the Binance hack, and where each candidate is indicated now.

1. Focus and why

Premarket is a sharp rotation: Nasdaq-100 futures −2.6% vs Dow −0.1% at 08:15 ET (Reuters). Tech/semis/PC hardware/crypto are gapping down hard; healthcare, staples, energy are bid. TRAI's 8:53 run kept the same buckets as the 17:00 postclose run and added BA to long_momentum. Questions: which BMO prints/macro items landed, and does any change gap risk on a current candidate?

2. Candidate gap check (Yahoo ~09:12 ET vs 10-29 close)

3. BMO prints this morning

REGN (Regeneron; Dupixent via Sanofi, Eylea/Eylea HD, Libtayo) — reported 6:30 AM, call 8:30

  • Revenue $5.116B (+36%) vs $4.54B expected; non-GAAP EPS $20.07 vs $16.06 (Regeneron IR, 2026-10-30; Investing.com, 2026-10-30).
  • Driver: Sanofi collaboration revenue $2.724B (+68%); the Development Balance was fully repaid at end-Q2, so it no longer reduces REGN's booked share. Dupixent global sales $6.54B (+35%).
  • Eylea US $400M (−41%), Eylea HD US $699M (+62%); combined −1%. Libtayo $550M (+51%). Bayer revenue −23%.
  • New: expanded Sanofi deal (4 long-acting antibodies), $1.0B upfront booked as Q4 revenue, up to $7.0B milestones (10-Q via StockTitan). FDA approved Pasatru (garetosmab) for FOP.
  • 2026 guide tweaks: adj. R&D raised to $6.05–6.15B; adj. SG&A cut to $2.4–2.5B; adj. product gross margin ~86% (from 84–85%) (Investing.com).
  • Premarket +7.28% (Yahoo 09:10) vs TRAI avg |gap| 2.43%, continuation 75%, avg day-1 in gap direction +3.28%.
  • Linkage: REGN–GILD ρ only 0.37; REGN–SNY (Sanofi) is the natural pair but SNY is not in TRAI's universe.

ABBV (AbbVie; Skyrizi/Rinvoq immunology, neuroscience, aesthetics, oncology)

  • Revenue $17.404B (+10.3%) vs $17.36B; adj. EPS $3.82 vs $3.74. Skyrizi $5.776B (+22.7%), Rinvoq $2.706B (+23.9%), Humira $683M (−31.2%) (AbbVie, 2026-10-30; Investing.com, 2026-10-30).
  • FY26 adj. EPS raised to $13.95–13.99 (from $13.76–13.96); midpoint $13.97 vs $13.95 consensus, i.e. essentially in line. Includes $0.69 of YTD IPR&D.
  • Pre-print context: TIKR's preview put the stock at ~19x forward and noted a weak lutikizumab Phase 3 in HS (8-pt placebo gap vs 17–20 hoped) (TIKR, 2026-10-29).
  • Premarket −0.40% (Yahoo 09:10; TRAI 8:53 had −1.0%). Last 4 prints all gapped down; avg day-1 in gap direction −1.71%.
  • Read-through to GILD (ρ 0.59, cluster 3): neutral, not a headwind.

XOM / CVX (integrated oil)

  • XOM: adj. EPS $4.23 vs $4.08 (LSEG), revenue $113.2B vs $103.1B; GAAP $3.72. CFO $25.7B, FCF $19.1B; Q3 distributions $9.4B; 2027 buybacks $20B announced (ExxonMobil, 2026-10-30; CNBC, 2026-10-30).
  • CVX: adj. EPS $5.28 vs $4.89, revenue $67.8B vs $61.6B; GAAP $5.06. US refinery crude throughput record 1.09M b/d (~98% utilization); net debt −$7.8B in the quarter; includes one month of Venezuela production (Chevron, 2026-10-30).
  • Driver: diesel/refining margins (refinery strikes in Russia and the Middle East per CNBC; AP cites wars in Iran and Ukraine) (AP, 2026-10-30).
  • Premarket XOM +1.73%, CVX +1.53% vs TRAI avg |gap| 1.26% / 1.20%. XOM fill rate 75% and continuation 0/4; CVX continuation 4/4. COP +1.6% in sympathy (cluster 2). No energy names in today's buckets. CVX call 10:00 CT (11:00 ET), XOM 8:30 CT (9:30 ET).

4. Macro this morning

  • ECI Q3 (8:30): +0.8% q/q (in line), 3.4% y/y; wages +0.7% (y/y 3.1% from 3.2%), benefits +0.9% (y/y 3.9%, a 3-year high per Continuum). Real private wages −0.6% y/y (BLS, 2026-10-30; Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-10-30; Continuum, 2026-10-30). Read: benign, not a market mover.
  • PCE was yesterday (Thu 10-29): headline +0.5% m/m / 3.6% y/y, core +0.3% / 3.1% (BEA; CNBC, 2026-10-29). Not today.
  • Rates: 10y ~4.935%, down >5bp this morning (CNBC, 2026-10-30). Reuters: LSEG pricing implies >50bp of Fed hikes by mid-2027 after this week's hold.
  • Chicago PMI 9:45 ET: 55.3 vs 58.8 prior and 56.1 consensus (see §12). UMich is not today: the October final (48.0, from 46.3 prelim) was released Oct 23; November prelim is Nov 6 (UMich 2026 release dates; UMich SCA). Month-end rebalancing.

5. Overnight shocks outside the buckets (and their links to candidates)

  • INTC −26% premarket: Q4 revenue guide $15–16B vs ~$17.07B; cash-burn warning; CEO Lip-Bu Tan: PC shipments −12% in 2026 and −10% in 2027, weakness through at least 1H27 due to memory shortages/prices (TipRanks, 2026-10-30; TradingKey, 2026-10-30).
  • PC OEM read-through: DELL −12.1%, HPQ −13.0% (Yahoo 09:11); HPE −6%, SMCI −6% (TradingKey). Preliminary IDC/Counterpoint: Q3 global PC shipments −20 to −21% y/y, HP −30.9%, Dell −25% (BigGo, 2026-10-30; secondary source, figures unverified at IDC). DELL next print 11-24 AMC (TRAI), HPQ ~11-24 (est.).
  • Semis: AMD −9.6%, ARM −9.6%, NVDA −2.5% (Yahoo/TRAI 8:53). None in buckets; CRM–INTC ρ −0.08.
  • AMZN −7.4%: holiday-quarter sales guide below Street, sharp Q3 cash outflow, signalled higher 2027 capex (Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-10-30). The 2027 capex number itself is still not verified here. AMZN–CVNA ρ 0.22, AMZN–DASH 0.20.
  • Binance hack: reported $6.36B theft, the largest on record; BTC briefly ~$76–77k (Investing.com premarket movers, 2026-10-30; CoinDesk, 2026-10-30; BBC). COIN −7.3%, MSTR −7.2% (Yahoo). TRAI labels CVNA "Crypto/High-beta", but its 60d ρ to COIN is only 0.26 and MSTR 0.27, so the label overstates the link. CVNA's −1.2% looks like high-beta tape (β60 2.17) not crypto.
  • Others: RDDT −22% (Q4 guide, search-referral decline), TWLO −17.5% (Q4 organic growth guide 11–12%), RBLX −19%, MDLZ +7.2%, RIVN +7.2% (Investing.com premarket movers, above).

6. Candidate-specific updates

  • GILD (MR fade-short): Analysts raised targets overnight: Wells Fargo $190 (from $165), Needham $200, BMO $184, TD Cowen $175, Cantor $175 (Benzinga, 2026-10-30; TipRanks/TheFly; Investing.com TD Cowen; Investing.com BMO). Indicated +4.76% ≈ 2.8× its 1.68% avg print gap. Healthcare is the bid sector (LLY +2.8%, AMGN +2.9%, MRK +2.6% in TRAI 8:53). The 8:53 premarket run still lists GILD as a fade-short even with a +4.8% indicated gap: the S-071 own-earnings guard is not implemented. Also: /api/events now shows GILD next = null with n = 3 — the 10-29 print is not recorded (S-068/S-072 failure mode again).
  • BA (new LM long): 10-29 +3.3% on relVol 1.69 was a rebound after a post-earnings selloff, plus a reported Space Force sole-source contract worth up to $945.9M (Investing.com, 2026-10-29; TipRanks, 2026-10-29; StreetInsider). Not an earnings-reaction day by TRAI's definition, but it's an oversold bounce (mom5 −7.9%), not trend momentum. Indicated −0.8%. BA's 60d top ρ are financials (COF 0.63, AXP 0.57) — likely a beta artifact. No BA company note exists yet. Why BA appeared in the 8:53 run but not the 4:34 PM run is unknown (possibly a data refresh of the final 10-29 bar); worth checking.
  • MO / CMG / DASH / CVNA: no new company news found this hour; see 17:00 report. MO's +1.3% indication fits both its own 0/4 fill history and the staples/defensive rotation (KO +2.0%, PEP +2.5%, PG +2.2%, MDLZ +7.2%).
  • HD / LOW (fade-shorts, one position, ρ 0.92): indicated +0.9% / +1.1%, extending yesterday's move; 10y yield −5bp supports housing-sensitive names. No company news found.
  • CRM (fade-long): −0.4% indicated into a Nasdaq −2.6% futures tape; TWLO's guide-down adds software pressure (CRM–NOW ρ 0.75). No CRM news found.
  • GE (fade-short): −0.6% indicated, i.e. with the short; no news found.

7. Analysis

  1. This is a rotation tape, and TRAI's buckets lean the "wrong" way on two fades. The mean-reversion bucket's shorts (GILD, HD, LOW) sit in the sectors being bought (healthcare, rate-sensitives), while its only long (CRM) sits in the sector being sold. The regime label is still transitional (VIX 18.6) but VIX rose 1.4 and the Nasdaq/Dow divergence is ~2.5pp.
  2. GILD is the cleanest stand-down. New fundamental information (beat-and-raise, five PT hikes), a gap ~2.8× typical, and a supportive sector tape. Fading this is fading news, which the MR bucket is not built to do.
  3. Long_momentum gaps are small and mostly in favour except CVNA (−1.2%, high beta) and BA (−0.8%). S-066/S-072 already say this bucket is reaction-day-heavy → OR confirmation/half size.
  4. The biggest single-name shocks (INTC, DELL, HPQ, AMZN, crypto) are outside the buckets. Their sympathy links to candidates are weak by TRAI's (stale) 60d ρ. The risk is tape-level, via beta: CVNA β 2.17, DASH β 1.13.

8. Actionable for Fri 10-30

ACTIONABLE: YES.

  • GILD fade-short: skip (reconfirms the 17:00 call, now with a +4.8% indicated gap vs a 1.68% average, plus PT hikes overnight). The 8:53 run did not remove it.
  • CRM fade-long: low conviction; it's a long into Nasdaq futures −2.6% with software guide-downs (TWLO). Wait for the opening range to hold or skip.
  • HD/LOW fade-shorts: one position; they're gapping further up with yields down. Only take it on an opening-range failure.
  • CVNA long: −1.2% indicated, β 2.17 into a high-beta selloff; weakest of the long_momentum names (also an EPS-miss rally, S-074). Prefer MO (+1.3%, defensive tape).
  • BA long: new, not earnings-driven but an oversold bounce; indicated −0.8%. Low priority.
  • Keep risk/trade at 0.25%; watch Chicago PMI 9:45.

9. Strategy proposals (see strategy.md)

All PROPOSALS for the 6 PM session; nothing here is built.

  • S-076 (PROPOSAL): rotation-day flag. When the QQQ–DIA premarket spread is beyond about 2pp (−2.5pp at 09:17 today: QQQ −2.60%, DIA −0.10%), show which bucket candidates are on the "funded" vs "sold" side, and don't fade candidates in the bid sector.
  • S-077 (PROPOSAL, extends S-071): skip a mean_reversion fade-short when the name's own beat-and-raise print sits between signal and entry and the indicated gap is > 2× its typical print gap and its sector is leading premarket. GILD today: +4.76% vs 1.68% avg |gap| (2.8×), healthcare bid.
  • S-078 (PROPOSAL, extends S-001): treat HD and LOW as one position (60d ρ 0.92; same bucket, same side, same macro driver). Both gapping up again today (+1.22% / +1.07%).
  • S-079 (PROPOSAL, data quality; extends S-068/S-072): /api/events missed GILD's 10-29 AMC print (next = null, n = 3), the fourth miss this week after NOW, CVNA and CMG. Add a second-calendar cross-check and an alert when next passes with no recorded event.
  • S-080 (PROPOSAL, data quality): re-label CVNA's sector. TRAI tags it "Crypto/High-beta", but 60d ρ to COIN is 0.26 and MSTR 0.27, and its Yahoo 60d β to QQQ is only 0.68 (vs SPY 1.88). Today's −1.0% is in line with SPY beta, not crypto.
  • S-081 (NEEDS DATA, from whiggity): four test ideas in §11 (PEAD-vs-fade conditioned on QQQ–DIA dispersion; Dow-component catch-down; beta-adjusted premarket residual; month-end Friday intraday profile).

10. Unknowns

  • AMZN 2027 capex figure; the IDC/Counterpoint PC figures (secondary source only); why BA entered at 8:53; Yahoo premarket quotes are thin (CDW last print 07:26, LOW 08:10, GILD 08:35).
  • Chicago PMI: released, see §12.

11. Research partner (whiggity)

_Source: whiggity (Kieran's Monica custom bot), reply received ~09:15 ET in this conversation. whiggity gave no citations and said it could not verify any 10-30 item; it treated this draft as a "given state vector". Everything below marked "whiggity" is its claim; only points checked against a cited public source or TRAI data at ~09:15–09:20 ET are kept as facts. Not independently authoritative._

Checked — whiggity was wrong:

  • whiggity: "Final UMich sentiment drops at 10:00 ET today." Wrong. The October final was released Oct 23 (48.0); the next release is the November prelim on Nov 6 (UMich release dates). It made the same error at 17:00 yesterday (17:00 report §11). Only Chicago PMI (9:45) is due this morning.
  • whiggity: "ECI is almost always released alongside PCE … either Core PCE printed hot at 8:30 ET". Wrong for today. September PCE came out Thu 10-29 (headline 3.6% y/y, core 3.1%) (BEA; CNBC, 2026-10-29). Its premise that the 10y "sits near a cycle high" on a risk-off morning also misreads the tape: the 10y is down >5bp to ~4.935% (CNBC, 2026-10-30), i.e. there is a bond bid.
  • whiggity: "CVNA β to NQ ≈ 2.5–3.0, so expected premarket −6.5% to −7.8%, residual ≈ +5.5%". Not supported. My calc on Yahoo daily closes (60 sessions to 10-29): CVNA β vs QQQ 0.68 (ρ 0.18), β vs SPY 1.88; TRAI beta60 2.17. With SPY −1.03% at 09:17, the beta-implied move is about −1.9% to −2.2% vs −1.04% actual: a residual of roughly +1pp, not +5.5pp (Yahoo chart API, CVNA). The direction of its CVNA concern (high-beta long into a risk-off tape) is still consistent with §8.
  • whiggity: "crypto flight-to-safety often goes to Gold (GLD)". Not today: GLD −1.98% premarket at 09:17 (Yahoo).

Checked — whiggity's read-through names, verified moves (Yahoo 5-min pre-market vs 10-29 close, ~09:17 ET unless noted; [Yahoo chart API](https://query1.finance.yahoo.com/v8/finance/chart/AMD?interval=5m&range=1d&includePrePost=true)):

  • PC/x86 & memory (INTC read-through): AMD −9.65%, ARM −10.04%, QCOM −5.89%, MU −6.57%, WDC −8.04%, STX −7.47%, AVGO −4.42%, NVDA −2.64%, MSFT −0.50%, CDW −2.54% (stale, last print 07:26). whiggity's ">4–5% AMD" threshold is met; the memory/storage hit is real. DELL −11.95%, HPQ −13.89% (TipRanks, 2026-10-30). None are bucket candidates; STX was a 10-29 long_momentum name in the 16:00 report (S-067 case).
  • Consumption software (AMZN/TWLO read-through): SNOW −2.75% (08:55), DDOG −4.08%, MDB −3.88%, NET −3.88%, IGV −1.19%; TWLO −21.87%. Consistent with whiggity's "sympathy selling", and with the CRM caution in §8.
  • Crypto: COIN −7.53%, MSTR −7.28%, HOOD −6.47%, MARA −4.74%, RIOT −6.40%, CLSK −6.46%; PYPL +0.49%, XYZ (Block) −0.86%. HOOD also carries its own weak Q3 (crypto transaction revenue −55% y/y) (Benzinga, 2026-10-30; Investing.com, 2026-10-30). Payment rails are not trading with crypto, contrary to whiggity's grouping.
  • Staples (MDLZ read-through): HSY +2.01% (08:49), KHC +2.09%, GIS +2.70%, MDLZ +7.08%. HSY's move matches the broad staples bid (KO/PEP/PG ~+2%), so it is not a MDLZ-specific sympathy signal; HSY reported its own Q3 earlier (EPS beat, volume −10%) (Investing.com transcript). MDLZ: adj. EPS $0.78 beat, organic +2.1%, gross margin +380bp, FY guide reaffirmed (Investing.com, 2026-10-30).
  • Energy (XOM/CVX read-through): EOG +3.40% (07:55), COP +1.83%, SLB +0.72%. Consistent with whiggity's "E&Ps as liquidity sponge", but EOG's print is thin/early.
  • Dispersion: QQQ −2.60% vs DIA −0.10% (SPY −1.03%), a ~2.5pp spread; this supports S-076.
  • Month-end: Fri 10-30 is October's last trading day (Oct 31 is a Saturday), already noted in the 17:00 report. whiggity's "Oct 31 mutual-fund fiscal year-end / tax-loss cutoff" is a common industry convention but unverified here and not used as a fact.

Unverified opinions from whiggity (not used as facts): 0DTE dealer short-gamma below put strikes; "pod-shop rotation into defensive winners"; MOC/VWAP rebalancing timing (10:30–11:00 ET onward); BA and MO being "cleanest orthogonal" longs (plausible, consistent with §8, but untested); HD/LOW green being "pure Dow sympathy" (the draft's yield-down explanation is better supported — the 10y fell).

Open questions worth testing (from whiggity; → S-081 NEEDS DATA in [strategy.md](../strategy.md)):

  1. PEAD vs fade conditioned on dispersion: when premarket r(QQQ) − r(DIA) < −2pp, do defensive beat-and-raise names gapping > +4% (GILD, REGN, MDLZ today) continue intraday rather than fade? Needs gap/earnings history plus QQQ/DIA premarket bars; directly tests S-077.
  2. Dow-component resilience catch-down: when a DJIA software/tech member (CRM, MSFT, IBM) gaps < 1% down while peers (IGV/TWLO/AMZN) gap < −5%, what is its 9:30–10:00 return? Relevant to the CRM fade-long; needs intraday bars.
  3. Beta-adjusted premarket residual: do high-beta names with a large positive premarket residual (r_pre − β·r_index,pre) and no own catalyst underperform in the first 60 minutes? Use TRAI beta60 against SPY, not whiggity's assumed NQ β (CVNA's residual today is only ≈ +1pp, so it would not trigger).
  4. Month-end Friday intraday profile: on month-end Fridays with NQ gapping < −2%, compare returns in 9:30–10:00, 10:00–14:00 and 14:00–16:00. Needs intraday bars; TRAI's replay uses daily bars only.

12. 9:45 update: Chicago PMI and the first 17 minutes

  • Chicago Business Barometer (October): 55.3, down 3.5 from 58.8, still in expansion for a second month. The drop came from Supplier Deliveries (−10.3, lowest since February), Production, Order Backlogs and New Orders, partly offset by Employment (MNI, 2026-10-30). Consensus was 56.1 (WealthBranch calendar), so a small miss. (A Gate.com page indexed before the release showed "56.1" as the actual. It was a pre-filled template and is not used.)
  • Rates: 10y 4.921% vs 4.989% prior close (Yahoo ^TNX ~09:47). Yields are still lower, so nothing has turned against the rate-sensitive (HD/LOW) bid.
  • Cash open, ~09:47 ET vs 10-29 close (Yahoo 1-min): QQQ −2.64%, SPY −1.17%, DIA −0.25%. GILD +4.16%, HD +0.65%, CRM +1.02% (reversed from −0.4% indicated), CVNA −0.61%, MO +2.45%.
  • What changes: the PMI miss is mild. It supports lower yields and the defensive tilt rather than reversing the rotation. CRM's early reversal is the opposite of whiggity's "catch-down" idea, but one data point after 17 minutes doesn't test it (S-081(2)). HD giving back half its gap fits the "only on an opening-range failure" call. The other calls in §8 are unchanged.
