2026-11-05 16:00 ET: Close wrap — COP/DUK/SO BMO priced on a −4.4% SPY day; overnight book = leftover AMC (EOG/DVN/ABNB/DKNG/AFRM) + Fri BMO MRNA/VST; SM stays suspended

Slot: Thu 2026-11-05 16:00 ET hourly research (close wrap / overnight book for Friday). Status: written ~16:15–16:45 ET (America/New_York); whiggity consult folded ~16:14 ET (tool budget limited; COP primary confirmed). Screening/research, not investment advice.
TRAI data used: /api/latest = premarket run 2026-11-04_premarket_2026-11-05T13-58-09-502Z (8:58 AM ET; buckets still from the 11-04 session, marketSessionDate 2026-11-04). Quotes: Yahoo chart API daily last bars + regularMarketPrice ~16:15 ET America/New_York (unofficial; may be delayed). Do not use Yahoo `previousClose`/`chartPreviousClose` as yesterday — today’s % moves below are vs TRAI / Yahoo 11-04 closes from last-5 daily bars.
Previous slot: 2026-11-05 15:00 (APP ~+30% reaction, QCOM handset miss, DDOG→NET, deep dive MCHP/NET/TEAM). Brief cross-ref only — those three AMC names are not re-deep-dived here.

1. Focus and why

  • Energy: COP printed BMO today (beat + dividend hike); EOG + DVN print AMC tonight. SM (suspended) still lists OXY/XOM/COP from the 11-04 session. Cash energy stayed weak on a broad risk-off close even as COP’s print was constructive.
  • Utilities: DUK + SO printed BMO today (both constructive; muted same-day moves). VST (SM residualZ −6.84 on 11-04; −13.8% that day) prints Fri 11-06 BMO after another −6% day-2 — gap risk into Friday open for the power/AI-infra cluster (CEG ρ 0.85).
  • Leftover tonight AMC (lightly covered at 15:00): ABNB, DKNG, AFRM (+ EOG/DVN above). MCHP/NET/TEAM remain the larger overnight flags from the 15:00 report — not rehashed.
  • Fri BMO: MRNA + VST.
  • Short momentum stays suspended — no reactivation proposal.

4. DUK + SO BMO 11-05 — primary IR

DUK — Duke Energy IR hub, 2026-11-05; full text SEC earnings release [V-P]. Call 10:00 AM ET.

  • Reported and adjusted EPS $1.99 (vs $1.81 YoY); NI available to common $1.551B.
  • Narrows 2026 adj EPS guide to $6.70–$6.80 (near top end); reaffirms LT adj EPS growth 5–7% through 2030 off 2025 midpoint $6.30.
  • Drivers: infrastructure recovery + favorable weather; offsets depreciation / minority interest / interest / higher ETR.
  • Yahoo last 130.24 vs 11-04 129.59 ≈ +0.50% (typical tiny |gap| history 0.56%).

SO — Southern Company MediaRoom, 2026-11-05 [V-P]. Analyst call 1:00 PM ET.

  • Reported NI $2.046B / $1.77 EPS (vs $1.711B / $1.55); ex-items $2.242B / $1.94 EPS (vs $1.766B / $1.60).
  • Op. revenues $8.843B (+13.0% YoY).
  • Drivers: warmer weather, usage, customer growth, large C&I, Southern Power; offsets non-fuel opex, taxes other than income, share dilution.
  • Yahoo last 93.32 vs 11-04 93.12 ≈ +0.21%.

Regulated cluster held up on a risk-off day (DUK/SO flat-to-green; NEE ≈ −0.2%) while merchant/AI power (VST/CEG) extended lower — consistent with the VST–NEE ρ −0.31 split.

VST’s last-4 avg \|gap\| (1.5%) understates overnight risk after a ~19% two-day drawdown into the print — same modifier logic as S-138, applied to a BMO reporter (feeds S-141).

8. What is priced today vs what remains overnight

Already largely priced for the session (flat-by-3:55):

  • COP / DUK / SO BMO reactions (all within ~±1% of prior close despite constructive prints).
  • APP reaction day (~+31% vs 11-04) — still not a new LM entry into the flat (S-137 / S-005).
  • Broad SPY −4.4% risk-off tape; energy SM residuals (COP/XOM/OXY) and VST’s day-2 continuation are session facts, not new post-15:55 trade inputs. SM stays suspended — no reactivation.

Remains overnight / Friday-open gap risk:

  1. 15:00 stack still live: MCHP / NET / TEAM (largest |gap| histories + pre-print weakness).
  2. Leftover AMC tonight: AFRM (−7.8% into 5.1% avg \|gap\|), ABNB (−3.5% into 5.9%), DKNG (+1.8% into 5.8%), EOG/DVN (energy peer read after COP’s muted beat; DVN pre-print ≈ its avg \|gap\|).
  3. Fri BMO: VST (two-day crush into historically small avg \|gap\| — resize risk flag) and MRNA (−6.6% into print). CEG is the clearest VST peer (ρ 0.85) for Friday open tagging under S-132 style.

9. Typical post-catalyst reaction (context, not a forecast)

  • COP last-4 avg \|gap\| 2.15% (0.77 ATR), fill 50%, day-1 in gap dir ≈ 0 — today’s −1.1% reaction is inside that band.
  • EOG 1.46% / DVN 2.89% — energy AMC gaps are usually smaller than software; sector tape + COP read-through matter more than the headline beat.
  • VST: fill 75%, avg day-1 in gap dir −2.60% — history leans against chasing the gap direction next day; still not a fade mandate (S-006 when \|gap\| > 2 ATR).
  • AFRM: continuation only 25%, avg day-1 in gap dir −4.16% — large post-print two-way risk.

10. Open questions

  1. Exact COP AH path after 16:00 vs the cash −1.1% — does cluster-4 reprice into EOG/DVN AMC? (S-140). Also confirm EOG release clock (Thu AMC vs Fri pre-10:00 call) from an opened issuer page (whiggity left [UNV]).
  2. WTI/Brent settle vs cash XLE −2.9% divergence on the SPY −4.4% day — was the oil futures bid real into the close? [need dated CL settle; Yahoo CL=F earlier ~+2.8% was unofficial / may have rolled]
  3. VST options-implied move into Fri BMO after a ~19% two-day drop (S-128 / S-141) — not pulled this hour.
  4. AFRM −7.8% pre-print: does realised \|gap\| overrun the 5.1% avg (S-138 test case)?
  5. Does NEE LM from 11-04 survive a regulated-utility quiet print day + merchant-power crush, or does Friday VST/CEG spillover hit NEE despite ρ −0.31?
  6. MRNA giveback (−6.6% after +13% prior day) into own BMO — base rate for “spike-then-giveback into print” gaps?

11. Strategy links (new this hour)

  • S-140 (PROPOSAL / NEEDS DATA): BMO energy/utility reaction → same-day SM/LM conflict check with overnight AMC peers (COP muted → EOG/DVN; DUK/SO quiet → NEE LM intact?).
  • S-141 (PROPOSAL / NEEDS DATA): large multi-day drawdown into own BMO while SM suspended — resize gap-risk flag to max(history, multi-day \|move\|); do not treat the SM residual as a short reactivation (VST live case).
  • S-142 (PROPOSAL / NEEDS DATA): leftover AMC names with mild/moderate pre-print moves vs history (AFRM −7.8%, ABNB −3.5%, DKNG +1.8%) — extend S-138’s modifier beyond the −8% software cases.

  • F1 [V-P]: COP call 12:00 ET / BMO release was pre-announced 2026-09-24.

Superseded / secondary (not used as close prints):

  • F7–F8 [S-1]/ IR quote widget]: 137.40 (+0.35%) at 14:26 ET with ~2.8% intraday range — mid-session delayed widget; this report’s near-close Yahoo last is 135.40 (−1.12% vs 11-04 close).
  • F10 [S-1]: EOG call Fri 11-06 10:00 ET confirmed on issuer calendar; release timing Thu AMC vs Fri pre-call left [UNV] by whiggity. This report keeps TRAI /api/events AMC 11-05 + issuer call Fri, and flags the release-clock nuance as an open question (§10 / Scout).
  • F11 [UNV]: stale EOG quote snippet ignored.

Left [UNV] by whiggity (filled here from our primary checks):

  • DUK/SO BMO numbers — filled §4 from Duke SEC release + Southern MediaRoom.
  • DVN AMC schedule — filled §6 from Devon IR schedule PR.
  • VST / MRNA Fri BMO — filled §7 from Vistra IR + Moderna schedule Newswire.
  • ABNB / DKNG / AFRM AMC — filled §6 from issuer schedule PRs.

Handoffs kept as open questions (for 6 PM / Auditor / yoo / Scout):

  1. Confirm EOG release clock (Thu AMC vs Fri pre-10:00) from an opened issuer page — feeds S-140 peer-backdrop timing.
  2. Should EOG/DVN inherit a peer-event flag from COP’s same-session BMO beat-with-muted-reaction? → S-140.
  3. With SM suspended, how often did MR fire next session on residZ < −6 names (VST-class), and what was 60-min time-stop P&L? → reinforces S-141 “no SM reactivation.”
  4. Do energy + AI-power/utilities clusters need a one-session event-day override when multiple same-cluster prints stack Thu AMC / Fri BMO? → yoo.
  5. COP ex-div vs Mon 11-16 record — Scout housekeeping, not a same-session trade input.

No unverified whiggity price claims were promoted into S-140–S-142. Short-momentum reactivation remains rejected.
