2026-11-02 09:00 ET: Monday open. Brent falls ~4% on Iran–Qatar talks (OPEC+ hold was a non-event), so the one energy long-momentum candidate (PSX) opens into a headwind. The premarket run's stress label is the stale-VIX9D artifact S-102 predicted. CHKP misses and MAR raises

Slot: Mon 2026-11-02 09:00 ET hourly research (pre-open). Status: DRAFT, written ~09:10–09:45 ET. Screening/research, not investment advice.

TRAI data used:

  • /api/latest: premarket run 2026-10-30_premarket_2026-11-02T13-58-09-807Z (generated 8:58 AM ET; marketSessionDate 2026-10-30), read ~09:12 ET.
  • /api/events (asOf 2026-11-02), /api/correlations, /api/regime, /api/macro, /api/scorecard (all asOf 2026-10-30). All returned 200.
  • Quotes: Yahoo chart API, 5-min bars incl. pre-market, latest bars ~08:20–08:30 ET for equities and ~09:00 ET for futures, read ~09:12 ET. Unofficial, may be delayed (Yahoo chart API). All statistics are my own calculations unless a source is cited.

Previous slots: Friday's 16:00 (weekend energy/OPEC+ setup, Monday BMO calendar, ISM) and 17:00 (stale postclose run, corrected buckets). This slot checks how the weekend actually resolved against those previews and does not repeat the ISM or CHKP-history work.

1. Focus and why

  1. The weekend resolved through oil, not OPEC+. The hold was consensus, as the 16:00 report expected. The surprise was Iran–Qatar talks, which took Brent down ~4% before the open (§2).
  2. PSX is the only energy name in a TRAI bucket (long momentum), and its signal was a Friday close at the highs into a Hormuz risk premium that is now partly coming out (§3).
  3. *Today's premarket regime label (stress) is the artifact S-102 predicted on Friday* (§4).
  4. BMO prints: CHKP (security software) and MAR (travel) (§5).
  5. TMUS (long momentum) is also gapping against its signal, on a report that SpaceX is in talks over Boost Mobile (§5d).
  6. Candidate-bucket gaps at ~08:30 ET (§6).

2. Oil: OPEC+ held; Iran–Qatar talks did the damage

  • OPEC+ (Sun 11-01): the seven core producers kept December targets unchanged, combined 31.01 mb/d (Saudi 10.478, Russia 9.949, Iraq 4.431) (AnewZ, 2026-11-01). Most are pumping well below target because of the Iran war; Reuters-cited OPEC data put the seven ~5 mb/d below their February pre-war level in August, the latest month available (EnergyReader, 2026-11-01). The full 21-member meeting on 11-29 sets 2027 quotas (same source). Brent was only −1.6% at the Sunday-evening reopen (same source), so the quota decision itself was not the driver.
  • The driver: "Oil fell more than 4% on Monday as talks between Iranian and Qatari officials on a deal to end the US-Israeli war on Iran raised hopes that Middle East supply disruptions could ease." Brent −$4.77 (−4.2%) to $108.66 and WTI −$4.29 (−4.1%) to $99.83 at 12:50 GMT (07:50 ET) (Reuters via Euronext, 2026-11-02). A draft proposal is circulating and a follow-up meeting is possible (same source).
  • Why it can reverse: Euronews reports "few signs of a breakthrough", that Trump kept the threat of fresh strikes alive, and that Netanyahu reportedly urged a strike right after Tuesday's midterms (Euronews, 2026-11-02). Tanker attacks around Hormuz have increased recently (Reuters, above). So today's oil move is headline-driven and two-sided, with a scheduled escalation risk on Tue night/Wed.
  • Yahoo at ~09:00 ET: CL=F 97.59 (−6.3% vs Friday's 104.12 settle). BZ=F 106.58 vs chartPreviousClose 113.43 (−6.0%). Note: Yahoo's BZ=F daily row for 10-30 shows 117.64, which does not match Reuters' implied Friday close of 113.43 (108.66 + 4.77); likely a front-month roll in Yahoo's continuous series. Use 113.43 as Friday's Brent close; don't compute Brent changes from the daily series around roll dates.
  • Gold +1.5% (GC=F 3,957 vs 3,898.9); 10y yield 4.90% (−3bp). ES +0.5%, NQ +0.8% (Yahoo).

3. Energy names into an oil-down open, and what history says

Premarket (latest 5-min bar ~08:20–08:30 ET vs Friday close, Yahoo): XOM 184.81 (−1.3%), CVX 232.72 (−1.2%), COP 151.56 (−1.6%), PSX 278.00 (−1.7%), MPC 444.73 (0.0%, no pre-market print in the window).

Study: energy names on days WTI fell > 4% (CL=F close-to-close), 2022-03 → 2026-10, n 63 (my calc, Yahoo daily bars):

SPY+0.04%+0.03%57%+0.07%—
  • Read: on big crude-down days, energy names gap down and keep falling after the open on average; refiners are not a hedge (PSX's o→c is among the weakest). This matches the 17:00 report's finding that PSX's crude beta is positive (+0.24) despite the textbook "cracks widen when crude falls" story.
  • Caveat (important): the conditioning uses the full-day crude move, which includes crude's moves during the equity session, so the o→c numbers are biased toward continuation. The fair test conditions on the crude move known before 9:30 ET (prior settle → ~09:25 ET), which needs intraday futures history. Logged as S-117 (NEEDS DATA).
  • Implication for today's PSX long-momentum candidate: the Friday signal (relVol 1.53–1.56, right at the 1.5 line; close at 0.81 of range) was built on energy strength into the weekend. The pre-open now shows the opposite catalyst. TRAI's LM rules require close above VWAP and top-30% range on the signal day only; they do not check for a contrary overnight macro shock. See S-116.
  • MPC (Tue 11-03 BMO): still the refiner print inside the gap-risk window (TRAI last-4 avg |gap| 3.16%). MPC–PSX ρ 0.91 (/api/correlations), so a PSX position held overnight carries MPC's print risk (S-004).

4. The premarket stress label is the S-102 artifact

  • Premarket run regime: stress, reason "VIX9D/VIX 1.015 > 1", with VIX 18.96 (live pre-open) and VIX9D 19.25 (Yahoo's last ^VIX9D bar is Fri 10-30 16:00).
  • On same-timestamp data (Friday's final closes) the ratio is 19.25 / 19.42 = 0.991 → transitional (17:00 report §2).
  • This is exactly the failure S-102 described on Friday: a calmer Monday pre-open (VIX 19.42 → 18.96–19.08) divided into a stale VIX9D prints a spurious stress label. The 16:00 report's S-102 note predicted it, though with the stale 20.94 VIX9D; the Monday run used the correct final 19.25, so the data-freshness side (S-108) worked and only the timestamp mismatch remains.
  • Practical effect today: riskPerTradePct is 0.25% under either label (VIX < 22), so sizing doesn't change. The label does change how the dashboard reads, and any rule keyed on stress (e.g., S-002-type suppression proposals) would misfire.
  • Counterpoint (S-112): Mondays carry a higher ratio on average (Mon − Fri +0.044, t +15.4). A Monday ratio near 1.0 after the open would therefore be less alarming than the same reading on Friday. Re-check with live VIX9D after 9:31 (S-091).

5. BMO prints

(a) Check Point (CHKP), not in universe; security-software read-through

  • Q3: revenue $670M (−1% y/y); security subscriptions $339M (+11%); RPO $2.5B (+5%); non-GAAP EPS $2.49 (−37% y/y, but +1% excluding a ~$1.47 one-time tax benefit a year ago); Q3 buyback ~$325M. CEO: "We believe revenues reached a trough in the third quarter... The recovery is taking longer than anticipated" (Check Point IR, 2026-11-02). No numeric Q4 guidance found in the release.
  • vs estimates: revenue slightly below LSEG $672M; EPS in line at $2.49 (Reuters via Longbridge, 2026-11-02). TD Cowen downgraded to Market Perform; KeyBanc kept Sector Weight, noting only 39% of channel partners reported in-line performance vs 50% in Q2 (per Investing.com, relayed by Yahoo Finance/Stocktwits, 2026-11-02; secondary).
  • Premarket: CHKP 144.11 vs 153.50 Friday (−6.1%); it traded as much as −9% (Yahoo/Stocktwits, above).
  • Read-through: PANW 370.19 (+1.2%), CRWD 257.14 (+2.7%) premarket, i.e., up with the tape, not down with CHKP. Consistent with the 16:00 report's finding that PANW agreed in sign with CHKP's reaction on only 4/9 inferred print days. CHKP's problem is company-specific (product/licence and maintenance revenue declines, sales restructuring), which is a weak sympathy signal. No universe action.

(b) Marriott (MAR), not in universe; travel read-through

  • Q3: worldwide RevPAR +6.5% (US & Canada +7.4%, international +4.4%; APEC +9%); adj. EPS $3.02; net rooms +4.6% y/y. FY26 RevPAR guide raised to 4.5–5.0% from 3.0–3.5%; Q4 RevPAR 4.5–5.0%; Middle East still a drag but improved from Q2 (Marriott, 2026-11-02). FY adj. EPS guide $12.07–12.14 (prior $11.64–11.81); Q4 adj. EPS $3.14–3.21 (RTTNews, 2026-11-02). Consensus was $2.85 per Bloomberg (Quartz, 2026-11-02).
  • Premarket: MAR 416.00 vs 399.65 Friday (+4.1%).
  • Read-through: US travel demand is holding up despite $100+ oil. Universe names: BKNG (Tue 11-03 AMC; TRAI last-4 avg |gap| 4.46%) and ABNB (Thu 11-05 AMC; 5.86%). BKNG premarket 150.29 (−0.1%), so no visible sympathy move yet. Whether MAR's prints predict BKNG/ABNB reactions is untested (S-118).
  • Note: BKNG trades at ~$150 in Yahoo data, which implies a split at some point; check before using any older per-share BKNG figures.

(d) Wireless: SpaceX–Boost Mobile report hits TMUS/VZ/T

  • A Washington Post report says SpaceX is in talks to buy Boost Mobile (EchoStar) or use its network. EchoStar (ECHO) +7.1% pre-market; VZ −2.8%, TMUS −2.6%, T −2.5% at 7:34 ET (Swingfolio pre-market note, 2026-11-02; secondary aggregator relaying the WaPo report; I did not read the WaPo article itself). EchoStar had 7.38M wireless subscribers at end-Q2, per Reuters (same source). TMUS 151.58 (−3.1%) at 08:18 ET (StockMarketWatch, 2026-11-02); Yahoo 152.10 (−2.8%).
  • Why it matters to TRAI: TMUS is a long-momentum candidate from Friday (+6.2%, relVol 1.6). A fourth-carrier threat backed by a well-funded entrant is a new competitive overhang for the whole telecom cluster, not a one-day blip, though it is still only a report of talks. Same pattern as PSX: the overnight catalyst runs against the signal (S-116). Telecom sector note updated.
  • Earlier SpaceX/telecom context is in the 2026-10-23 11:00 report.

(e) Others (from the same aggregator, secondary): IDXX +4.7% (Q3 EPS $3.96 vs $3.72, guide raised), EL +3.2%, OKTA +2.3% (joins S&P 500 on 11-04, replacing KVUE), KOS −9.3%. None in the universe. The same source cites WSJ/NYT reports that both the US and Iran are preparing for more strikes after the midterms, and puts December Fed-hike odds at 72.9% (per Benzinga); I did not verify either directly.

(f) Utilities: PEG 74.29 (+0.9%) and ETR 110.11 (+0.1%) premarket (utilities, cluster with DUK/SO); I did not read their releases this hour.

7. Actionable for today

  1. PSX (long momentum): the weekend catalyst went against the signal. Pre-open −1.7%; in the n 63 study, PSX fell further after the open on average (−0.84%, 35% hit), with the conditioning caveat in §3. If traded, the normal confirmation (above OR30 and VWAP after the open) matters more than usual, and Tue BMO MPC is the next event.
  2. TMUS (long momentum): gapping −2.8% on the SpaceX–Boost Mobile report (§5d); same logic as PSX, require post-open confirmation.
  3. Ignore the "stress" label for interpretation; sizing is unchanged (§4).
  4. Oil is headline-driven both ways today, with escalation risk around Tuesday's midterms (§2). Energy and airline/travel names can reverse on a single headline.
  5. CHKP and MAR do not change any universe candidate's gap risk today.

8. whiggity consult

<a id="whiggity-consult"></a>Consulted ~09:05–09:15 ET in a new Monica chat (conversation). Monica showed "Something went wrong" twice mid-search, but the bot finished. Nothing in this report changed because of the consult.

  • It could not verify anything from 11-02. whiggity tagged OPEC+, the oil move, CHKP, MAR and the earnings calendar all [UNV], saying its searches timed out or found no dated 11-02 documents. Each of those is verified above with a primary or wire source (Check Point IR, Marriott newsroom, Reuters via Euronext, AnewZ/EnergyReader). Its CHKP check pointed at Check Point's Q2 release and the FY2025 20-F, which predate the Q3 print.
  • One verified fact, not material today: FY2025 CHKP GAAP diluted EPS $9.62, non-GAAP $11.89 (vs $7.46 / $9.16 in 2024), per the 20-F on EDGAR [V-P].
  • Its "conflict" isn't one: it set the Nov/Dec 2025 ISM readings (48.2 / 47.9, ABA Banking Journal, 2026-01) against the ~54.7 consensus for Oct 2026. Readings ten months apart don't contradict a current consensus; the 54.7 comes from the 16:00 report's FHLBNY source. Still worth checking against the actual 10:00 print.
  • Questions (b)–(e) (oil reversal risk, refiner vs E&P reactions, MAR read-through, test ideas) were declined as out of scope under its new fact-gatherer role and handed to the Scout/Auditor/yoo bots. My own refiner study (§3) and S-116–S-118 cover (c)–(e). Open item: route analytical questions to the Risk Auditor rather than whiggity from now on.

9. Strategy proposals (see strategy.md)

  • S-116 (proposal): contrary-overnight-catalyst check for momentum candidates.
  • S-117 (needs data): energy o→c conditional on the pre-open crude move.
  • S-118 (needs data): MAR → BKNG/ABNB print read-through.
  • S-102 evidence updated with today's premarket label.

10. Open questions

  • Is the SpaceX–Boost report confirmed by either company, and how far does the telecom gap fill?
  • Does the oil drop hold through the 10:00 ISM and into Tuesday's midterms?
  • PEG/ETR release details not read.
