2026-10-30 16:00 ET: Friday close and October wrap. The VIX spike unwinds into the bell, so tonight's "stress" label is a coin flip. The premarket run mixes live VIX with Friday's VIX9D. Energy closes at its highs into a Sunday OPEC+ meeting and Hormuz headlines. What Monday's pre-open adds: ISM, turn of the month, and the CHKP/MAR/PEG prints
Slot: Fri 2026-10-30 16:00 ET hourly research. Status: DRAFT, written ~16:10–16:45 ET. whiggity consult folded in ~16:25–16:45 ET (§9). Screening/research, not investment advice.
TRAI data used:

Quotes: Yahoo chart API (5-min and daily), pulled ~16:05–16:15 ET. Unofficial and may be delayed (Yahoo chart API). The last 5-min bar is 15:55 for most stocks. Daily volume for today may still be filling in. All statistics are my calculations on Yahoo daily bars (2016-01 to 2026-10-30) unless a source is cited.
Previous slots today: 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 (Monday AMC prints), 13:00, 14:00 (stress label, rates/banks/utilities/housing), 15:00 (the five LM names on day 2).
This hour does not repeat those. It covers:
- the close and the month
- whether tonight's and Monday morning's runs will say "stress", and a data-timing flaw in how they decide
- a preview of Monday's candidate list
- energy into a weekend with an OPEC+ meeting
- Monday's pre-open calendar: macro, turn of the month, and BMO prints from names outside the universe
1. Focus and why
- The vol spike reversed into the close. VIX peaked at 23.93 at 14:30. The VIX9D/VIX ratio fell from 1.048 at 14:30 to ~1.00 at the bell (§2). The 14:00 and 15:00 reports were written while stress was clearly live. That is no longer clear.
- Monday's trades come from Monday's 8:53 premarket run. The regime inputs for that run have a timing mismatch (§3). On Monday it is likely to produce a stress label for the wrong reason.
- Weekend: an OPEC+ meeting on Sunday 11-01, more Hormuz mine and tanker headlines, and talk of US strikes after Tuesday's midterms. Energy names closed at the top of their ranges (§5).
- Monday pre-open: the 12:00 report covered Monday's AMC prints. The BMO side (CHKP, MAR, PEG, ETR, and others) and the ISM print at 10:00 were not covered.
2. The close and the month

Week and month returns are close-to-close against the 10-23 and 09-30 closes (Yahoo daily; my calc).
- SPY recovered off the lows. Its low was −2.47% at 14:30 and it closed −1.77%. QQQ closed −3.47% against a −4.46% low. Every index closed below its OR30 low and roughly at VWAP (SPY −0.02%, QQQ −0.11%).
- Mid-session reports differ from the final numbers.
- Bloomberg at 15:07 had the S&P −2.2% and the Nasdaq 100 −4.1%, and said the NDX was "about 10%" off its peak, near correction territory (Bloomberg via swissinfo, 2026-10-30, page stamp 20:09, zone not stated).
- Mint's wrap gives S&P 7,559.85 (−2.08%) and Nasdaq 25,303.37 (−3.37%) (Mint, 2026-10-30). Those do not match Yahoo's closes, so I treat them as pre-close figures.
- Investopedia at 14:53 had the Nasdaq Composite on pace for its worst month since March 2025 (Investopedia live, 2026-10-30).
- What the market blamed (Bloomberg, same link):
- Intel's guide.
- Amazon's capex.
- An FT report that Anthropic may not get an immediate investment-grade rating after its IPO.
- Bitcoin below $77k after the Binance hack.
- Treasuries headed for their best month since February 2025.
- I found no headline for the 14:30 → close reversal (VIX 23.9 → ~19.5–19.9 at 15:50–15:58, 20.68 in the 4:21 PM run). It may simply be month-end and weekend de-risking or option flows. That is unverified.
- October in one line: semis −14%, while energy, staples and utilities were each up 10–14%. Every name in TRAI's current buckets sits on the rotation side except CRM, DASH and BA.
Current candidates at the close (15:55 bar vs the 10-29 close; the 8:53 run's buckets):
| Name | Bucket | Close chg | Open→close | vs OR30 | vs VWAP | Range pos | Week | Oct |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CVNA | LM | −0.09% | +0.50% | inside | −0.74% | 0.53 | +18.1% | +9.1% |
| CMG | LM | +1.89% | +0.63% | inside | −0.63% | 0.44 | +15.8% | −0.3% |
| MO | LM | +1.64% | −0.10% | inside | −0.28% | 0.20 | +5.0% | +15.8% |
| DASH | LM | −0.01% | −0.65% | inside | −0.79% | 0.35 | −0.2% | −2.5% |
| BA | LM | −0.63% | +0.27% | inside | −0.12% | 0.34 | −8.9% | −7.8% |
| GE | MR fade-short | −3.58% | −2.59% | below | −0.69% | 0.14 | +5.7% | −3.4% |
| HD | MR fade-short | +0.08% | −1.23% | below | −0.18% | 0.11 | +2.9% | +15.7% |
| LOW | MR fade-short | +0.94% | −0.48% | inside | +0.03% | 0.36 | +5.3% | +13.5% |
| GILD | MR fade-short | +3.06% | +0.58% | inside | −0.76% | 0.25 | +9.4% | +14.5% |
| CRM | MR fade-long | −0.78% | −0.97% | inside | −0.41% | 0.20 | −7.8% | −0.2% |
- The LM names faded in the last hour, and all five closed below VWAP.
- CVNA gave back its whole day: +1.22% at 15:13, −0.09% at the close. It lost its above-OR30/above-VWAP status, so the 15:00 report's "most likely carry-over" call is now weak.
- The 15:00 conclusion still stands: the four print names did not give back their print-day gains.
- The fade-shorts worked in GE and HD (both below OR30 at the close). GILD and LOW went against the fades. CRM, a fade-long, lost a further 1% from the open.
3. Tonight's and Monday's regime label: a knife-edge and a timing flaw (actionable)
The close is borderline.
- Yahoo is not consistent across endpoints at ~16:10:
- Daily-bar/meta values (
regularMarketTime15:58 ET): VIX 19.87, VIX9D 19.92, ratio 1.0025. - The 15:50 5-min bar: 19.62 / 19.60, ratio 0.999.
- An earlier read of the 1d meta: 19.46 / 19.33, ratio 0.993.
- My local engine run at ~16:14 used the daily bars: VIX 19.89, VIX9D 19.96, VIX3M 21.00, ratio 1.004. It labelled the regime stress ("VIX9D/VIX 1.004 > 1"), with
riskPerTradePct0.25% because VIX < 22. - The VIX index keeps calculating until the 16:15 close of options trading. *Outcome: the official 4:21 PM run printed stress: VIX 20.68, VIX9D 20.94, ratio 1.013, risk 0.25%* (§10). VIX ticked up after my reads, so Yahoo's ~15:58 values were not final.
- Either way, VIX is ~2 points below 22, so the code will not halve risk.
The timing flaw (from `/api/history`, all 12 runs from 10-22 to 10-30):
- In every premarket run,
vix9dequals the prior postclose value, whilevixis the live pre-open value. Examples: - 10-30 8:53: VIX 18.59 (live) vs VIX9D 15.87 (= the 10-29 close).
- 10-27 8:53: VIX 17.78 vs VIX9D 17.92 (= the 10-26 close).
- Why: VIX is disseminated pre-open, and Yahoo's ^VIX daily bar updates with it. ^VIX9D does not update before 9:30.
lib/engine.tsL146–150 takes the last daily close of each, so the premarket ratio compares two timestamps. - Consequence:
- The *only premarket stress label in the history (10-27, ratio 1.008) was caused by VIX falling* overnight** (18.39 → 17.78) below a stale VIX9D. The postclose label either side of it was transitional (0.974).
- In the other direction, the 10-30 premarket ratio of 0.854 understated front-end stress on a morning when futures were −2.6% (Nasdaq).
- Monday, 11-02: Friday's VIX9D close (20.94 in the official run) will be the denominator.
- If VIX is lower Monday pre-open, the 8:53 run will say stress even though vol has eased. That is the usual outcome after a VIX-spike Friday: the 14:00 report §8 found a Monday SPY median of +0.52%, 77% up.
- If a weekend escalation lifts VIX above ~20.9, it will say transitional even if the front end is inverted.
- Action for Monday: do not apply the 15:00 report's manual 0.125% override on the strength of the 8:53 label alone. Re-check VIX9D/VIX with live values after 9:30 (S-091's re-check), and use that. → S-102.
4. Preview: who is likely in tonight's buckets (local run, ~16:14 ET; not the official run)
| Bucket | Names (chg; relVol) | Calendar flags (TRAI /api/events) |
|---|---|---|
| Long momentum | REGN (+13.33%; 4.5; 10-30 BMO print day), TMUS (+6.21%; 1.6), SPOT (+6.57%; 1.64), AMZN (−1.41% but residual +1.75%, rangePos 0.90; 2.62; 10-29 AMC print reaction) | REGN and AMZN are earnings-reaction picks: the weak subset in the replay (S-100). SPOT was covered at 13:00. |
| Short momentum (suspended) | RBLX −18.1%, QCOM −11.1%, APP −10.4%, DDOG −11.5%, KLAC −5.7%, TEAM −6.1% | QCOM 11-04 AMC, APP 11-04 AMC, DDOG 11-04 BMO, TEAM 11-05 AMC |
| Mean reversion (13) | GS, ASML, FCX, ANET, ETN, HOOD, AMAT, CMCSA, JPM, PLTR, NEM, ISRG, SHOP | PLTR Mon 11-02 AMC; SHOP and ETN Tue 11-03 BMO; ANET Tue 11-03 AMC. These fades would be traded with a print 0–1 sessions away (S-085). |
- None of the current ten names reappears. If the official run matches, Monday's list is a different set: a rotation tail (REGN/TMUS/SPOT) and a large semis/AI fade-long group (ASML, AMAT, ANET, ETN, PLTR, plus FCX/NEM on metals).
- The 13 MR names include four with a print within two sessions, and ASML/AMAT/ANET/ETN are one cluster-1 bet (S-078). Count them as one position.
- Caveat: the preview used daily volume as of ~16:14. Across the six postclose→premarket pairs in
/api/history, postclose relVol is a median 0.99× and as low as 0.78× the premarket value, so names near the 1.5 line can change. On 10-29, BA was added in the premarket run. Its relVol barely moved (1.66 → 1.69), so the reason was something else that I did not isolate. - The official run differs: see §10 (LM REGN/AMZN/PSX; MR 17 names).
5. Energy into the weekend: closed at the highs; OPEC+ on Sunday; Hormuz
Close (15:55 bar):
| Name | Chg | Range pos | vs OR30 | vs VWAP | Next print (TRAI) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XOM | +2.16% | 0.67 | inside | +0.33% | done (10-30 BMO) |
| CVX | +1.78% | 0.73 | inside | +0.19% | done (10-30 BMO) |
| COP | +2.67% | 0.92 | above | +0.50% | Thu 11-05 BMO |
| OXY | +1.57% | 0.90 | above | +0.20% | 11-09 |
| EOG / DVN | +2.08% / +1.92% | 0.89 / 0.84 | above / above | +0.46% / +0.28% | 11-05 |
| MPC | +2.89% | 0.91 | inside | +0.84% | Tue 11-03 BMO |
| PSX | +3.36% | 0.81 | inside | +0.88% | done (10-28) |
| XLE | +1.89% | 0.84 | inside | +0.40% |
- None made long momentum in the 16:14 preview (relVol 0.6–1.2 on partial daily volume). In the official 4:21 PM run, PSX qualified for LM (relVol 1.53), right at the line (§10).
- Prints:
- XOM adj. EPS $4.23 and CVX $5.28 both beat. For the first time in at least six years, Exxon earned more from refining than from exploration and drilling.
- Chevron's Nelson: margins "will stay a bit elevated, maybe into next year".
- XOM set $20B of 2027 buybacks and raised its Q4 dividend by 4c. Both shares rose ~2%.
- Source: Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-10-30.
- Both touched all-time highs (CNBC, 2026-10-30).
- Read-through: record refining at the majors is a direct read for MPC's Tue 11-03 BMO print (TRAI last-4 avg |gap| 3.16%, 1.25 ATR; last three reactions were all up: +6.03%, +3.16%, +1.82% c/c).
- OPEC+ meets Sunday 11-01. These are the seven core producers (Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, Oman).
- The meeting date was set at the 10-04 meeting, which held November targets at September levels (OPEC, 2026-10-04).
- Reuters sources expect December targets to be held; "no final decision" yet (CryptoCompass relaying Reuters, ~2026-10-29/30; TokenPost, 2026-10-27).
- Gulf producers are pumping well below quota because of export disruption, so a hold is largely notional (CNBC, 2026-10-04). The full group meets 11-29.
- A hold is consensus, so it probably does not move Monday's gap. A surprise either way would.
- Hormuz/Iran (the larger weekend risk):
- Iran's IRGC said tankers struck mines on an "unauthorized southern route".
- UKMTO reported explosives attached to a tanker ~25nm NE of Khasab.
- The Houthis claimed strikes on Saudi airports and oil sites.
- The WSJ reported that Adm. Cooper briefed Trump on Iran options, and US action is reportedly weighed for after the 11-03 midterms. VP Vance has a parallel letter-based talks track.
- Sources: CNBC, 2026-10-30 03:12 ET; AP, 2026-10-30; Al Jazeera, 2026-10-30.
- Oil faded into the close: WTI was +2.3% at 14:00 and finished +0.80% at $102.82 (Yahoo).
- History says the Monday gap after a strong energy Friday is a coin flip. Fridays with a ≥ +1.5% gain closing in the top 20% of the range, 2016–2026, Monday open gap and open→close (my calc):
| n | Mon gap mean / median | % up | Mon o→c median | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XLE | 52 | −0.27% / −0.10% | 42% | −0.04% |
| XOM | 53 | +0.02% / +0.06% | 51% | +0.12% |
| COP | 66 | −0.08% / +0.05% | 56% | −0.28% |
| MPC | 57 | +0.13% / +0.11% | 56% | +0.22% |
The subset with the same Friday SPY ≤ −1% is only n 4 per name, all with negative median gaps. That is too small to use. This adds to S-095(3) (fade vs hold of Friday oil moves) but does not resolve it. Weekend headline risk dominates, and there is no systematic Monday edge.
6. Monday pre-open calendar (ET; DST ends Sunday 02:00, so Monday is on EST. TRAI's UTC crons have EDT/EST twins, so run times stay 8:45/16:20 ET; §9, S-107)

(a) CHKP → universe security names: a weak read-through.
- Method: reaction days are inferred from CHKP's volume spikes at its usual reporting windows. I kept 9 dates (2024-07 to 2026-07) and dropped two that were other events (2024-02-21 was PANW's own −28% day; 2024-05-31 was a month-end). The dates are not IR-verified.
- CHKP's own reactions were large: −14.5%, −14.5%, −19.6% and −8.2% c/c on its four worst days.
- Peer same-day excess return vs SPY had the same sign as CHKP's c/c on: PANW 4/9, CRWD 3/9, ZS 5/9, NET 3/9. Only FTNT (8/9) tracks it, and FTNT is not in the universe.
- On the four CHKP ≥ −8% days, peer excess ranged from −5.5% to +3.1% (PANW −5.5 on 2025-07-30; NET +3.1 on 2026-07-30).
- Implication: a big CHKP move on Monday is not a reason to expect PANW/CRWD/ZS/NET to gap the same way. They fell 3.9–9.6% today on the AI/software tape, and that tape matters more. → S-104.
(b) Turn of the month. SPY on the first trading day of a month, 2016–2026 (n 128): gap mean +0.10%, median +0.18%, 63% up; o→c mean +0.05% (52% up).
- When the prior month's last day was ≤ −1.5% (n 9): SPY gap mean +0.56% (8 of 9 up), c/c +0.69%. QQQ gap +0.36% (67% up), c/c +0.80%.
- So the gap tends to be up and the session after the gap is flat. n 9 is small, and the sample does not condition on weekend geopolitical risk. → S-103.
- This agrees with the 14:00 report's VIX-spike-Friday result (SPY Monday median +0.52%). A gap-up Monday is the base case. It is not a forecast.
(c) Berkshire (BRK-B) date conflict.
- MarketWatch and TipRanks list Q3 for 11-02; TipRanks marks it "TBA (Confirmed)" while also calling the date estimated (MarketWatch; TipRanks).
- Drillr and TRAI say Sat 11-07 (Drillr).
- Berkshire has reported on Saturdays (2026-05-02 and 2026-08-08 per TipRanks' history). 11-02 is a Monday, which fits that pattern poorly. Unknown; a Saturday 10-31 release cannot be ruled out. TRAI's average BRK-B gap is small (0.52 ATR).
7. Other items
- CMG: Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol (formerly Chipotle's CEO) said Starbucks could become a multi-brand company. Bloomberg notes this came two weeks after Starbucks denied rumours that it was exploring a takeover of Chipotle (Bloomberg, 2026-10-30; CBS News on the denial). Niccol framed it as possible "down the road", not a current focus (Yahoo Finance video, 2026-10-30). It is a talking point for CMG takeover speculation, not news. CMG closed +1.89%, below VWAP.
- GE: closed −3.58% at the low (range 0.14). The fade-short call worked. Secondary coverage cites FCF, cost and margin worries and fuel-price risk to flight hours, after the 10-20 beat-and-raise (US News/Reuters, 2026-10-20). There was no new company news today. The intraday finanzen.net and TradingKey items read as auto-generated, so I did not use them.
- No after-hours prints for universe names (Friday AMC calendar is thin; Tickzen lists three small after-close reports). The financedashboard AH list in search results shows 10-29 data (INTC/AMZN) and is stale. Not used.
8. Analysis and calls
- Flat into the weekend. Nothing here argues for an overnight hold.
- Regime (actionable for Monday's sizing):
- Tonight's label is borderline (ratio ~0.99–1.004 depending on the feed).
- Monday's 8:53 label will compare live VIX with Friday's VIX9D (§3). If it says stress while VIX is lower than Friday's close, it is a timing artifact.
- Size from VIX9D/VIX re-read after 9:30 (both live). VIX ~20 is far below the 22 halving line, so the code gives 0.25% either way.
- Monday candidates come from tonight's/Monday's run, not from today's ten names.
- If the preview holds, the MR bucket is semis/AI-heavy and print-adjacent: PLTR prints Mon AMC; SHOP and ETN Tue BMO; ANET Tue AMC.
- Treat ASML/AMAT/ANET/ETN as one cluster-1 exposure.
- REGN and AMZN in LM are earnings-reaction picks (S-100: historically weak).
- Monday 10:00 ISM is the first scheduled shock. HD/LOW/utilities (rate beta) and cluster 1 (hike odds via the prices index, 77.2 f'cast) are exposed. OR30 runs 9:30–10:00, so ISM lands right when OR30 completes. OR-break signals at 10:00–10:05 will be contaminated by the release.
- Energy: no Monday edge from Friday strength (§5). OPEC+ is expected to hold. Hormuz and US-strike headlines are the gap risk. MPC is the one name with a print (Tue BMO) inside the window.
Strategy proposals (see [strategy.md](../strategy.md)):
- S-102 (proposal, data quality): compute VIX9D/VIX from same-timestamp inputs. In the premarket run, either use the prior closes for both, or fetch live VIX9D after the open. Flag |ratio − 1| < 0.01 as "borderline". Evidence: the 10-27 stress label came from a falling VIX against a stale VIX9D, and today's close is 0.99–1.004 depending on the endpoint.
- S-103 (needs data): a turn-of-month tag for first-trading-day picks (SPY gap 63% up; 8/9 up after a ≤ −1.5% month-end day).
- S-104 (needs data): before flagging an out-of-universe print as a sympathy gap risk, require a measured sign-agreement with the universe peer (e.g. ≥ 7/9). CHKP → PANW/CRWD/ZS/NET fails (3–5/9).
- S-105 (needs data, from whiggity §9): Friday VIX-spike reversal (R_rev > 0.5 with VIX9D/VIX > 1) → Fri close to Mon 10:30 QQQ/SMH.
- S-106 (needs data, from whiggity §9): 3-day z < −1.5 mean reversion by distance to earnings (> 10 vs ≤ 4 sessions).
- S-107 (proposal, ops): verify the EDT/EST cron twins across the 11-01 DST switch and add a missed-run check. No cron change.
9. Research partner (whiggity) consult
Consulted in a new Monica chat (~16:25 ET) with this report's summary. whiggity cited four links (Barchart, Reuters, Bloomberg, Yahoo); the Reuters and Bloomberg links are paywalled (Reuters returned 401 to my fetch). Rule for this section: a point is kept only if I could check it against a public source with a link and a date. Everything else is listed as an open question, unverified. Checks done ~16:25–16:45 ET.
Verified, corrected or contradicted (attributed to whiggity):
- US DST ends Sun 11-01 (02:00 → 01:00 local): verified (timeanddate, 2026-10-02; USNO 2026 table). New York moves from UTC−4 to UTC−5 on Monday 11-02.
- TRAI cron check (my own, prompted by whiggity).
vercel.jsonschedules are UTC (Vercel cron expressions are always UTC). A single UTC entry would shift by an hour in ET: e.g.45 12 * * 1-5is 8:45 EDT today but 7:45 EST on Monday. TRAI already handles this. Every job has an EDT twin and an EST twin (premarket45 12/45 13, postclose20 20/20 21, events30 11/30 12, options30 19/30 20, daily40 20/40 21, intraday5 21/5 22), andapp/api/cron/route.ts/lib/research/cronGate.tsrun only the twin whosetzmatches New York's current offset (lib/stats.tsetZone, viaIntlAmerica/New_York). - I simulated Monday with
npx tsxagainst the realcronGate/etZone: at 2026-11-02 12:45Z the EDT premarket twin is skipped (ET hour 7, zone est); at 13:45Z the EST twin runs (ET hour 8). Postclose: 20:20Z skipped (ET 15), 21:20Z runs (ET 16). Today (EDT) the EST postclose twin at 21:20Z is skipped. So the ET times of the premarket (8:45) and postclose (16:20) runs do not change on Monday. Only the UTC stamps in run IDs move by an hour (e.g.…T13-4x…Zinstead of…T12-5x…Z). - Residual risk: this is the first DST switch since the twins were added, so it has not been exercised live. Vercel Hobby can start a cron late within the hour; the postclose EST twin at 21:20Z still lands inside the 16–17 ET window. → S-107 (ops verification on Monday; no cron change).
- China PMIs: dates verified, times converted.
- NBS official PMI: Sat 10-31, 09:30 Beijing (NBS 2026 release calendar, published 2025-12-26; "preliminary and subject to adjustment"). That is Fri 10-30 21:30 EDT, i.e. tonight, before DST ends.
- Caixin (now also branded RatingDog) manufacturing PMI: Mon 11-02, 09:45 Beijing = Sun 11-01 20:45 EST (Finance Calendar, status "Estimated"; secondary, S&P Global calendar not checked). Note the page's own text says "9:45 pm ET", which ignores the DST change; the correct ET time is 20:45, after US futures reopen at 18:00.
- Read-through to semis/ETN is whiggity's, untested here.
- Treasury refunding: verified. Financing (borrowing) estimates are scheduled for Mon 11-02, and the refunding statement for Wed 11-04 (Treasury, Most Recent Quarterly Refunding Documents: "The next release is scheduled for November 2, 2026" and "November 4, 2026"). The 15:00 ET time is inferred from the August pattern on the same page (estimates released "3:00 PM Monday, August 3, 2026"; statement 8:30 AM Wed); November's exact time is not printed. Dealer meetings ran 10-29/10-30 (Treasury dealer agenda, Nov 2026). The prior estimate for Oct–Dec was $628B (per search summary of Treasury's August release; not opened).
- Berkshire Q3 "Saturday, likely 11-07": consistent, not company-confirmed. Berkshire's 2026 releases were Saturdays: Q1 on Sat 05-02 and Q2 on Sat 08-08, each preceded by an "Information Regarding … Earnings Release" notice a few days earlier (04-29, 08-05) (Berkshire 2026 news menu, read 10-30). No such Q3 notice exists yet, so Sat 10-31 is unlikely. Secondary sources say Sat 11-07 (ad-hoc-news, 2026-10-19, citing Yahoo). The 11-02 listing in §6(c) is most likely a placeholder. Resolves §6(c): not a Monday event. The "always 8 AM ET" time is unverified.
- ON "BMO first Monday of Nov": wrong (again). onsemi's own release says Q3 results come after market close Mon 11-02, with a 5:00 PM ET call (onsemi IR, 2026-10-15; Nasdaq copy, 2026-10-15). whiggity made the same error at 12:00 (12:00 report §9). §6 already lists ON as Mon AMC; no change.
- NXPI "Monday AMC": wrong. NXP already reported Q3 on Tue 10-27 at 4:10 PM EDT (call 4:30 PM): revenue $3.79B (+19% y/y), non-GAAP EPS $4.20, Q4 revenue guide $3.75–3.95B, plus a new $5B buyback (NXP IR, 2026-10-27). No Monday read-through to ON from NXPI.
- First Majestic (AG) "BMO this week": wrong week. AG reports Thu 11-05 BMO (call 11:00 ET) (First Majestic, Q3 production release). Not in the universe.
- OPEC+ seven-country group meets online Sun 11-01: verified by OPEC's own release: the seven "will continue to hold monthly meetings … The next meeting will be held on 1 November 2026"; on 10-04 they kept November at September's required production (OPEC, 2026-10-04). The seven are Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman. The UAE is not one of them, so whiggity's "UAE export leaks" point belongs to the wider group (full meeting 11-29, §5), not Sunday's decision.
- PLTR Mon 11-02 AMC: consistent with the 12:00 report (verified there) and TRAI
/api/events. - "SPX −0.30%, Dow −0.25%, NDX −1.38% on 10-30": contradicted. Yahoo closes were S&P −1.82%, Dow −1.09%, NDX −3.46% (§2), and Bloomberg had the NDX −4.1% at 15:07. whiggity's Barchart link is a generic VIX-futures page with no dated index figures. Not used.
- Front-month VIX future ~19.77 (vs 18.83 on 10-29): not verified (same generic Barchart page). It is in the neighbourhood of Yahoo's final ^VIX daily bar, which I re-read at ~16:30 ET: VIX 19.47, VIX9D 19.34 (ratio 0.993), high 23.93. That differs from the 4:21 PM run's 20.68 / 20.94 (ratio 1.013), so §3's "VIX ticked up after my reads" explanation is doubtful: Yahoo's VIX feed itself is inconsistent across reads. Monday consequence: the 8:53 run's VIX9D denominator will be whatever Yahoo's ^VIX9D daily close shows then (19.34 on this read, 20.94 in the official run). That strengthens §3/S-102: re-read both after 9:30 before sizing.
Open questions from whiggity (unverified, not used in §8):
- Its explanation of the 14:30 VIX reversal: the NYMEX 2:30 PM settle, 0DTE charm/vanna put monetization, and month-end MOC rebalancing into equities. No sources; plausible but untested (§11 still has no headline).
- Energy counter-case: ~2M bpd of voluntary cuts; possible pre-11-29 leaks of higher Iraq/Kazakhstan/UAE exports; a weekend hedge unwind so XLE/crude gap down on an uneventful hold; crack spreads compress when crude spikes. The §5 study (XLE Monday gap mean −0.27%, 42% up after strong Fridays) is consistent with a mild fade, but no OPEC+-specific test was run.
- Read-throughs: CHKP → PANW, FTNT ("hardware beta"), NET/CRWD/ZS; MPC → VLO, PSX, DINO, PBF (watch capture rates and buyback pace). CHKP→universe sign agreement is weak except FTNT (§6a). MPC→PSX is structurally plausible (MPC–PSX ρ 0.886, energy note); untested around prints.
- ANET / Astera Labs (ALAB) sympathy around ANET's Tue AMC print: untested.
- ISM consensus 54.7 and oil ~$105 intraday: whiggity could not verify; §6 has 54.7 from FHLBNY, and WTI's high was in that area (13:00 report).
whiggity's testable ideas → [strategy.md](../strategy.md):
- Friday VIX reversal ratio R_rev = (VIX high − close)/(VIX high − prior close) > 0.5 with VIX9D/VIX > 1 → Fri close to Mon 10:30 QQQ/SMH. Today: (23.93 − 19.47)/(23.93 − 17.20) = 0.66 on Yahoo's final bar (0.48 using the run's 20.68), ratio 0.993–1.013. → S-105 (extends S-094 and the 14:00 §8 VIX-spike-Friday study with the reversal condition).
- Mean reversion of 3-day z < −1.5 for names with earnings > 10 sessions vs ≤ 4 sessions away. Today's MR list has PLTR (Mon AMC), SHOP/ETN (Tue BMO), ANET (Tue AMC), NET (Thu AMC). → S-106.
- XLE IBS > 0.85 on a Friday before a weekend OPEC+ meeting with high oil vol → fade Monday gap/drift. → not added: duplicate of the §5 strong-Friday study plus S-095(3); the OPEC+ conditioning would leave n ≈ a dozen weekend meetings since 2023.
- FTNT/PANW first-30-minute beta to a CHKP premarket gap of ±4%. → folded into S-104 as an intraday extension (Yahoo 5-min history covers ~60 days, so at most one CHKP print).
Net effect on §8: no call changes. Verified additions to Monday's list: China NBS PMI tonight 21:30 ET, Caixin Sun 20:45 EST, Treasury borrowing estimates Mon (15:00 ET by precedent), refunding statement Wed 11-04. Removed: BRK (Saturday), NXPI (already reported 10-27). ON stays AMC. DST does not move TRAI's run times (S-107 for verification). whiggity's checkable record this consult: DST, OPEC+ date, PLTR date, China PMI dates and Treasury date right; index closes, ON timing, NXPI date and AG week wrong.
10. Official 4:21 PM run vs preview
Official run 2026-10-30_postclose_2026-10-30T20-21-55-558Z (generated 4:21 PM ET; /api/latest, read ~16:40 ET):
- Regime: stress, "VIX9D/VIX 1.013 > 1 (front-end inversion)". VIX 20.68, VIX9D 20.94, VIX3M 21.33. riskPerTradePct 0.25 (VIX < 22, so S-092 applies: label stress, risk not halved).
- Long momentum (3): REGN (relVol 4.51), AMZN (2.33), PSX (1.53). PSX is a refiner that crossed the 1.5 relVol line, and the only energy name in any bucket. It has no print in the window (it printed 10-28). TMUS and SPOT from the preview dropped out.
- Short momentum (6, suspended): RBLX, QCOM, APP, COIN (new), DDOG, KLAC. TEAM dropped out.
- Mean reversion (17): SNOW, ASML, GS, NEM, NET, NVDA, SHOP, ANET, ETN, AMAT, HOOD, JPM, PLTR, ISRG, C, AVGO, CSCO. FCX and CMCSA dropped out.
- The semis/AI cluster-1 group is now larger: ASML, NVDA, AVGO, AMAT, ANET, ETN, plus SNOW/NET/PLTR on software. Treat these as one or two correlated bets (S-078).
- Print-adjacent: PLTR Mon AMC; SHOP and ETN Tue BMO; ANET Tue AMC; NET Thu 11-05 AMC (TRAI
/api/events). - Preview vs official: the 4 LM / 6 SM / 13 MR preview (~16:14) became 3 / 6 / 17 in the official run (~16:21). That is the provisional-list problem in S-102: names near relVol 1.5 and |z| 2 moved within minutes.
- Monday's 8:53 run will recompute from scratch with Monday's premarket VIX against VIX9D 20.94 (§3).
11. Unknowns
- Why Yahoo's VIX at ~15:58 (19.87) differs from the run's 20.68: a post-16:00 move into the 16:15 settle is the likely reason (unverified).
- No headline found for the 14:30 → close reversal.
- CHKP reaction dates are inferred from volume, not IR-verified. MAR/PEG/ETR times come from secondary calendars (StockTitan, Tickzen, MarketBeat); only CHKP's comes from IR.
- The OPEC+ outcome. The Reuters "hold" expectation is relayed by secondary outlets.
- Berkshire's Q3 date: most likely Sat 11-07 (secondary sources; Berkshire's usual pre-release notice not yet posted; §9). Not a Monday event.
- Yahoo ^VIX/^VIX9D final daily bar (19.47/19.34 at ~16:30) vs the 4:21 PM run (20.68/20.94): which value Monday's premarket run will use as VIX9D (§9).
- Forex Factory and for-ex.news times are shown in their page time zones. I used FHLBNY's 10:00 ET for ISM.

Takeaway: the afternoon VIX spike mostly unwound into the bell, and the official 4:21 PM run still printed stress (ratio 1.013; VIX 20.68 < 22, so risk stays 0.25%). Its list is new: REGN/AMZN/PSX long, and a 17-name MR list heavy in semis/AI. Monday's 8:53 label has a timing flaw: it compares live VIX with Friday's VIX9D, so a calmer Monday would read as stress. Re-check the ratio after 9:30 before sizing. Energy closed at its highs into an OPEC+ meeting where a hold is expected. Weekend Iran headlines are the gap risk, and history gives no Monday edge from Friday energy strength. The Monday pre-open adds ISM (landing as OR30 completes), a turn-of-month gap-up base case, and BMO prints (CHKP/MAR/PEG/ETR) whose read-through to universe names is weak or untested.
