2026-10-30 13:00 ET: Cross-asset check: VIX at 20.9 with VIX9D/VIX at 0.99 (one tick from TRAI's "stress" label), gold/silver/copper liquidation (NEM, FCX), oil at ~$105 on Hormuz, and SPOT's idiosyncratic bid

Slot: Fri 2026-10-30 13:00 ET hourly research. Status: final, drafted ~13:10–13:40 ET; research partner (whiggity) input in §9 (verified points only; the rest listed as open questions). Screening/research, not investment advice.
TRAI data used:

  • /api/latest = still the 8:53 AM premarket run (2026-10-29_premarket_2026-10-30T12-53-19-775Z; regime transitional, VIX 18.59, VIX9D 15.87, VIX9D/VIX 0.854, risk/trade 0.25%). No newer run, so the regime panel on the dashboard is ~4.5 hours stale.
  • /api/events (generated 2026-10-30 12:17 UTC). /api/correlations, /api/regime, /api/macro asOf 2026-10-22 (stale, S-068).
  • Engine source: lib/engine.ts lines 150–180 (regime label and risk-per-trade logic).

Intraday quotes: Yahoo chart API 5-min bars, last bar ~13:11 ET (indices/vol to 12:58 ET), vs the 10-29 close. Unofficial, may be delayed (Yahoo chart API).
Previous slots today: 09:00 (INTC, crypto, REGN/ABBV/XOM/CVX BMO prints), 10:00 (OR30, telecom, pharma, software split), 11:00 (semis rout, next week's cluster-1 prints), 12:00 (PLTR/AAPL/ON/VRTX Monday AMC). This hour does not repeat those. It covers the volatility regime vs TRAI's rule thresholds, the metals complex (not covered today), oil's new catalysts, and SPOT (not covered today).

1. Focus and why

  • Vol regime is approaching an engine threshold. VIX 20.85 (+21.2%, high 20.94), VIX9D 20.68 (+30.3%), VIX3M 21.41. VIX9D/VIX is 0.991, peaking at 0.997 at 10:20 ET. TRAI labels the regime stress when VIX > 22 or VIX9D/VIX > 1 (lib/engine.ts L154). The live tape is closer to that line than the 8:53 run (0.854) shows. VVIX 113.6 (+16%).
  • Metals are being sold with equities, not bought as a haven. Gold futures −3.15% ($3,904), silver −6.1% ($49.20), copper −1.8% ($6.48/lb); GDX −5.57%, COPX −5.24%; NEM −5.48%, FCX −5.37%. None of the earlier reports today covered cluster 16.
  • Oil is up again (WTI fut. +2.85% to ~$104.9) on new supply headlines, and that feeds the Fed-hike narrative that is hitting gold.
  • SPOT +5.71% is the biggest non-pharma/telecom gainer in the universe, and it diverges from its cluster partner NFLX (+0.34%).

2. Volatility vs TRAI's rules (actionable piece)

VIX/VIX3M0.9740.960 (8:53 run)
  • What the engine does (lib/engine.ts): label = stress if VIX > 22 or VIX9D/VIX > 1; but `riskPerTradePct` halves only on VIX > 22 (L180). The Glossary says "In stress, risk per trade is halved (0.125%)" (components/Glossary.tsx), so code and docs disagree when stress is triggered only by front-end inversion. Proposal S-092 below.
  • The engine only evaluates at runs (premarket/postclose), so an intraday crossing doesn't change the dashboard. The Checklist (components/Checklist.tsx) tells the operator to check VIX, VIX9D/VIX and VIX/VIX3M and set risk by hand. As of 12:58 neither trigger has fired: VIX is 1.15 pts below 22, and VIX9D/VIX has not printed > 1 on any 5-min bar today.
  • History (Yahoo daily 2016–2026, my calc): of 20 days with VIX +≥20% close-to-close that closed between 19 and 25, the next session's VIX close was > 22 in 5/20. SPY's next-day gap median was +0.25% (65% up), mean −0.05%. Five were Fridays: the Monday SPY gaps were −3.99% (2024-08-05), +0.64%, +1.17%, +0.79%, +0.52%. So the usual outcome is a small Monday bounce, with one large left-tail case. n is small and the sample is not conditioned on a war/oil shock or a midterm week.
  • Calendar ahead adds event risk on top. Mon 11-02 ISM Manufacturing 10:00 ET (survey 54.7), Tue 11-03 JOLTS + midterm elections, Wed 11-04 ADP/ISM Services, Fri 11-06 October payrolls 8:30 ET (survey 65k; prior 29k) (FHLBNY MSD weekly, week ending 2026-10-30; payroll date confirmed by BLS schedule). FHLBNY: the Fed held this week with two dissents for a hike, and the year-end forward implies ~82% odds of a 25 bp hike at the Dec 9 FOMC (as of Thu afternoon).

3. Metals: gold, silver and copper liquidated alongside tech

Drivers (cited):

  • Reuters via Kitco: gold hit its lowest since mid-July and is set for a second monthly loss. UBS (Staunovo) cites stronger Q3 GDP and higher oil "putting pressure on the Fed to hike further"; September inflation accelerated (Kitco/Reuters, 2026-10-30).
  • Mining.com: spot gold fell as much as 3.2% to $3,891.67, its weakest since Oct 28 last year. Silver broke below $50. Investors sold metals "to cover losses elsewhere" during the tech rout. Producers fell as much as 8%. October is gold's worst October since 2008 (~−6%), and gold is ~28% below the $5,419.83 record close of Jan 28. Traders price >70% odds of a December hike (Mining.com, 2026-10-30; page blocks fetch, quoted from search extract).
  • USA Today: spot $3,899.74 at 12:05 ET, −3.76% vs $4,052.17 (USA Today, 2026-10-30). Spot quotes differ by source and timestamp; Yahoo GC=F (Dec futures) is −3.15% at $3,904.4.
  • Copper: LME −0.8% at $14,245/t, COMEX −1.17% to $6.524, "AI selloff in the equities is pressuring copper by weighing on risk appetite"; US warehouse stocks ~726k t; the Yangshan premium is near a 13-year high (ADM Investor Services, 2026-10-30). _Caution: the same ADM note quotes Dec silver at "$79.895, −4.8%", which conflicts with Yahoo SI=F $49.20; not used._

Names:

  • NEM (Newmont; largest gold miner): −5.48%, below OR30 low (−4.69%), −0.83% vs VWAP. Gold beta 1.24 (2026 YTD, NEM note) implies ~−3.9% from gold alone. The rest fits NEM's 2026 equity beta (SPY ρ 0.47) and the "sell what's liquid" flow. Newmont guides 2026 on $4,500 gold / $70 Brent, with gold ±$100 → $505M (Newmont Q3 release, 2026-10-22). Today has gold ~$600 below that deck and Brent ~$40 above it, so both price and cost run against the guide. No NEM-specific news found today.
  • FCX (Freeport; copper, Grasberg): −5.37%, inside OR30, −0.62% vs VWAP. Q3 (10-27 BMO): adj. EPS $0.88 vs $0.80, revenue $7.55B vs $7.36B (Investing.com transcript piece), but 2026/2027 copper sales guidance was cut to 3.0B/3.7B lb from 3.1B/3.8B, Q3 sales 749M lb (−23% y/y; Grasberg block cave ramp), unit net cash cost $2.07/lb vs $1.40 (ad-hoc-news/Northern Miner, 2026-10-30; Markets Daily from 8-K, 2026-10-30). FCX's 60d ρ to TSM 0.57, LRCX 0.55, ASML 0.54 (TRAI), so it is trading with the semis rout as much as with copper.
  • Cluster 16 (FCX, NEM, ρ 0.645) also carries risk-on ρ: NEM–HIMS 0.46, MARA 0.45, RIOT 0.43; FCX–HIMS 0.54 (TRAI). HIMS −8.83%, MARA −9.35%, RIOT −10.04% today. "Gold miners as hedge" is not how these names have traded in 2026.

Typical reaction (Yahoo daily 2016–2026, my calc): 25 days with gold futures ≤ −3%. NEM same day mean −5.61% (median −5.86%, 24/25 down), so today's −5.48% is a typical-size move. Next day: NEM gap mean −0.26% (48% up), o→c mean +0.79% / median −0.12%, close-to-close median +0.72% (64% up). Gold's own next day ~flat (median +0.11%). No reliable bounce in the gap. A slight positive close-to-close skew, n = 25, unadjusted. On 24 days with gold ≤ −2% and XLE ≥ +1% (today's combination), NEM next-day close-to-close mean +0.65% (58% up).

4. Oil: new supply headlines, monthly gain ~14–15%

  • WTI futures ~$104.9 (+2.85%, Yahoo CL=F). Reuters-sourced reports: a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by explosive devices attached by a small boat (UKMTO), and the US reiterated it may resume hostilities with Iran after the midterms. Brent (Dec, expiring today) $117.62 and Jan $113.58 at 10:45 GMT. Both benchmarks are on course for monthly gains near 14–15% (Investify, 2026-10-30; The National, 2026-10-30). Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure were cited overnight (Moneycontrol, 2026-10-30).
  • Cluster 2 (energy, avg ρ 0.713): XOM +2.07%, CVX +1.73%, COP +2.40%, EOG +2.03%, DVN +1.94%, PSX +2.42%, MPC +1.72%, OXY +1.43%; XLE +1.62% (Yahoo ~13:11). XOM/CVX prints were covered at 09:00.
  • Weekend link: oil and gold now move in opposite directions through the rate channel. In the 2026 regime GDX–WTI ρ is −0.22 (gold-miners note). A weekend Iran/Hormuz escalation would likely gap oil up and metals/miners down Monday. A de-escalation would do the reverse. Direction unknown; magnitude risk is elevated.
  • Energy prints next week (TRAI /api/events): MPC 11-03 BMO, COP 11-05 BMO, EOG/DVN 11-05 (timing unknown).

5. SPOT: report-driven bid plus the anti-semis factor

  • Catalyst: the FT reported (via Reuters, published 01:55 ET) that Spotify aims to launch an AI music-remix service in Q1 2027, possibly unveiled around the February Grammys. It is considering an extra $4–5/month, has licensing deals with UMG, Merlin and Believe, and is still negotiating with Sony and Warner. Spotify did not comment (Investing.com/Reuters, 2026-10-30; TipRanks, 2026-10-30). This is a press report, not a company announcement.
  • Price action: +5.71% ($589.08), above its OR30 high (+4.62%), +0.45% vs VWAP, day high +6.23%. NFLX (cluster 29, ρ 0.67) is only +0.34%.
  • Factor share: the SPOT note records that SPOT averaged +2.61% on 2026 days with SMH ≤ −4% (n 11; S-046). SMH is −7.76% today, so roughly half the move may be factor and half news (rough split, not a regression).
  • Fundamentals (already-reported Q3, 10-22): revenue €4.969B (+16%), GM 33.0%, op income €672M; Q4 guide: subs 316M, revenue €5.2B, GM 33.8%, op income €820M (6-K Ex. 99.1). Next print: not on file (TRAI next = null). Not a TRAI candidate today.

Indices: SPY −1.81%, QQQ −3.62%, DIA −0.90%, IWM −1.99%, SMH −7.76%.

  • No candidate has a new catalyst this hour. None is in cluster 16 or cluster 2. MO and FCX are negatively correlated (−0.42), and MO–NEM is −0.30 (TRAI), so the metals sell-off is a mild tailwind for the staples long, if anything.
  • Factor exposure to the oil/metals headline risk: CVNA and DASH have negative 60d ρ to the oil majors (CVNA–XOM −0.37, DASH–CVX −0.38; TRAI). An oil spike would lean against both longs. Flat-by-3:55 means no candidate carries the weekend.

7. Analysis and calls

  1. The vol threshold matters more than the metals story for today's trading. If VIX prints > 22, the engine's own rule halves risk to 0.125% for any remaining entries before 3:55. If VIX9D/VIX goes > 1, the regime label is stress but the code leaves risk at 0.25%. Today the operator has to apply the checklist by hand. This is a sizing input, not a direction call.
  2. Metals are a liquidity/rates story, not company news. NEM's move is typical for a −3% gold day. History gives no edge on Monday's NEM gap (mean −0.26%, coin-flip). Weekend Iran/Hormuz headlines are the swing factor for both oil and gold.
  3. SPOT is a news-plus-factor move on a press report. Not a TRAI bucket name; if tonight's postclose run flags it long_momentum, S-066 applies.
  4. Month-end: today is the last trading day of October and of most funds' Oct 31 excise-tax year (§9). Gold's worst October since 2008 and oil's ~14–15% monthly gain both close their months today (Mining.com; Investify).

8. Strategy proposals (see strategy.md)

  • S-091 (proposal): intraday regime re-check at 12:00 and 14:00 ET, using live VIX/VIX9D/VIX3M, published to /api/latest (or a light /api/regime-live), so the dashboard's risk-per-trade isn't 4–6 hours stale on a day like today.
  • S-092 (proposal, code/doc mismatch): align risk halving with the stress label (halve on VIX > 22 or VIX9D/VIX > 1), or fix the Glossary to say only VIX > 22 halves risk. The engine (lib/engine.ts L154 vs L180) and the Glossary currently disagree.
  • S-094 (proposal, from whiggity): continuous risk scalar (VIX intraday z-score + VIX9D/VIX slope above 0.95) to replace the VIX > 22 step. Backtest first.
  • S-095 (needs data, from whiggity): cross-asset tests: GDX/NEM 1–3d reversion on QQQ ≤ −1.5% days, 4-factor miner beta, Friday CL1 hold vs fade, XOP/JETS vs USO, SPOT on VIX-spike days.
  • S-093 (needs data): "Haven failure" flag: when gold ≤ −2% on a day QQQ ≤ −2%, does next-day cross-asset dispersion (cluster 16, cluster 2, cluster 1) carry information for momentum entries? Today is the live case.

9. Second researcher (whiggity)

Consulted in a new Monica chat (~13:15 ET; one of whiggity's searches errored and Monica retried). Rule for this section: a point is kept only if I could check it against a public source with a link and a date. Everything else is listed at the end as an open question, unverified. Quotes below were refreshed ~13:19 ET (Yahoo chart API 5-min, vs the 10-29 close).

Verified or partly verified (attributed to whiggity):

  • Event density in VIX9D's window (partly verified). whiggity argued that VIX9D/VIX ~0.99 may reflect next week's crowded calendar rather than spot panic. The calendar checks out: ISM Manufacturing Mon 11-02 10:00, JOLTS Tue 11-03 10:00, ADP/ISM Services Wed 11-04, payrolls Fri 11-06 8:30, plus the midterm elections (FHLBNY MSD weekly, 2026-10-30; BLS schedule). All of them fall inside VIX9D's 9-day horizon. That this is what drives the ratio is unverified. It fits the tape, though: VIX/VIX3M is 0.974, so the 3-month part of the curve is not inverted. whiggity's alternative to the VIX > 22 step is a continuous risk scalar built from VIX's intraday z-score and the VIX9D/VIX slope above 0.95. It goes in as a proposal to test (S-094), not a fact.
  • Month-end and fund fiscal year-end (verified, with a correction). Most US mutual funds measure excise-tax capital gains over the year ending October 31 (26 U.S.C. §4982 requires distributing 98.2% of capital-gain net income for the one-year period ending Oct 31) (24/7 Wall St, 2026-10-30; 26 U.S.C. §4982, Cornell LII). whiggity said Oct 30. The date is Oct 31, but Oct 31, 2026 is a Saturday, so today is the last trading day of that window and the practical point holds. Whether today's metals or semis selling is tax-loss or rebalancing flow is unverified.
  • Oil lifts miners' costs (partly verified; the 15–25% figure is narrower than whiggity stated). Jefferies puts energy at ~12% of the average gold miner's cost structure, with +10% oil ≈ +$10/oz AISC; open-pit miners are the most exposed (Mining.com, 2026-03-15). The "15–25% of AISC" figure appears only for open-pit gold operations, in a secondary source (Discovery Alert, 2026-07-24). As a sector-wide number it is unverified. Company evidence from yesterday: Agnico Eagle says diesel adds ~$50–60/oz to Q4 costs (vs ~$30 in Q3) and up to $80/oz in 2027; diesel is ~11% of its operating costs (Bloomberg via Mint, 2026-10-30). NEM's guide assumes $70 Brent (§3). FCX volume → unit cost (verified): Q3 unit net cash cost $2.07/lb vs $1.40 on −23% sales volume (§3 sources).
  • Counter-view: liquidation and rates, not a gold-bear thesis (consistent with cited sources). whiggity's view that Hormuz is a supply shock and gold falling during an escalation points to liquidation and real-rate repricing matches Mining.com (metals sold "to cover losses elsewhere") and Reuters/UBS (oil → Fed-hike pressure) (§3). The "not fundamentally bearish" part is interpretation.
  • Oil curve (verified from quotes). WTI's front-month gain of +2.7% is modest next to the headlines, as whiggity said. The CL1–CL6 strip (Dec-26…May-27) is $104.76 / 102.82 / 100.54 / 98.02 / 95.65 / 93.42, so CL1–CL6 backwardation is $11.34 (≈10.8%), up from $10.23 at the 10-29 close: the front is leading (Dec +2.71% vs May +1.80%; Yahoo CLZ26…CLK27.NYM, ~13:09 ET). VLCC rates (partly verified): still very high but off their peak. Gulf of Oman–China fell to ~$657k/day by 10-23 from ~$913k two weeks earlier (Breakwave Advisors, 2026-10-23).
  • SPR and pre-midterm policy (partly verified, and it cuts against the idea of a new release). DOE says its 10-29 awards (>40M bbl) complete the 172M-bbl emergency exchange, part of a 400M-bbl IEA action (DOE, 2026-10-29). The SPR was ~283M bbl on 10-06 (Yahoo Finance, 2026-10-06), and earlier pre-midterm releases are documented (Herald Business, 2026-09-30). A new pre-midterm SPR or de-escalation move is speculation (unverified). The weekend gap risk for oil shorts stands, as in §4.
  • Oil-linked names (quotes verified, ~13:19 ET). Domestic E&Ps up: FANG +2.59%, EOG +2.05%, DVN +1.90%, XOP +1.76% (USO +2.05%). Airlines and cruise lines down: DAL −3.30%, UAL −3.25%, JETS −3.18%, RCL −1.75%, CCL −0.73%. Tankers are not bid: FRO −0.22%, DHT −0.56%, INSW −1.14%, STNG −2.93%, so whiggity's tanker read-through is not confirmed by today's tape. Most of these names are outside TRAI's universe.
  • SPOT remix tier (verified via a dated major source; whiggity's citation corrected). The Yahoo Tech article whiggity cited is dated 2026-05-22 (AfroTech via Billboard). It covers an earlier UMG-artist covers/remix feature, not today's news (Yahoo Tech, 2026-05-22). The current, dated source is the FT via Reuters: licensing with UMG, Merlin and Believe, Sony and Warner still negotiating (Investing.com/Reuters, 2026-10-30). That confirms whiggity's "WMG/Sony not confirmed". The Reddit post was not used. Peers today: UMG.AS +7.89% (Amsterdam close), WMG +0.46%, SONY −0.88%, TME +0.90%. The market is rewarding the one label that has signed. "Royalty pass-through limits margin" is unverified (no disclosed terms).
  • FCX copper sensitivity (verified from FCX's own Q3 call). Modeled 2027–28 average: annual EBITDA > $12B at $5 copper to $19.5B at $7; operating cash flow > $9B to ~$15B; each $0.10/lb ≈ $390M EBITDA; gold $100/oz ≈ $105M (holding gold at $4,000, moly at $32) (FCX Q3 call transcript, Motley Fool, 2026-10-27). Near term, each $0.10/lb in Q4 ≈ $75M of 2026 operating cash flow (FCX 8-K Ex. 99.1, 2026-10-27). These figures replace whiggity's numbers. whiggity's 2022 Reuters FCX article is stale and was not used. Metals peers today: SCCO −6.75%, AEM −7.13%, PAAS −6.87% (vs GDX −5.57%, COPX −5.24% at ~13:00).

Open questions from whiggity (unverified, not used in §7):

  • Does VIX9D/VIX ≥ 0.95 on a pre-event week predict a higher realized VIX path, or does it mean-revert after the events pass? (S-094)
  • On QQQ ≤ −1.5% days when GLD/SLV are positively correlated with QQQ, do GDX/NEM mean-revert over 1–3 days? (S-095; related to S-093)
  • A 4-factor miner beta (copper, gold, crude, SPY) for NEM/FCX/GDX (S-095).
  • Do Friday CL1 moves > +2.5% on geopolitical headlines hold or fade into the Sunday open? (S-095)
  • In Hormuz shocks, does an XOP/JETS pair beat outright USO? (S-095)
  • Does SPOT's idiosyncratic rally continue on VIX-spike days? (S-095; extends S-046)
  • Is today's metals/semis selling fund-year-end tax-loss or rebalancing flow? Is the sector-wide 15–25% diesel share of AISC right? Does remix royalty pass-through cap SPOT's margin?

10. Unknowns

  • No company-specific NEM news found today. The NEM/FCX moves are attributed to the metals/rates move and risk-off selling on the basis of sector sources, not company statements.
  • Spot gold levels differ by source and timestamp ($3,890–3,911). Silver levels conflict between ADM and Yahoo.
  • The Fed-hike probability is quoted as >70% (Mining.com), 73% (ADM) and ~82% (FHLBNY, Thursday forwards), from different sources and times.
  • The SPOT factor-vs-news split is a rough estimate.
  • Correlations/regime/macro layers are stale (to 10-22, S-068).

Takeaway: Size down into the close and carry nothing over the weekend. VIX9D/VIX is ~0.99 into an event-packed week, oil's curve is steepening, and metals are being liquidated.
