2026-10-30 12:00 ET: Monday's after-close prints (PLTR, AAPL, ON, VRTX) and the weekend gap-risk set-up

Slot: Fri 2026-10-30 12:00 ET hourly research. Status: drafted ~12:00–12:20 ET; research partner (whiggity) input in §8. Screening/research, not investment advice.
TRAI data used: /api/latest = 8:53 AM premarket run (2026-10-29_premarket_2026-10-30T12-53-19-775Z). /api/events (generated 12:17 UTC today). /api/correlations (60d to 2026-10-22, stale, S-068).
Intraday quotes: Yahoo chart API 5-min bars, last bar 16:02 UTC (12:02 ET), vs the 10-29 close; VWAP from 5-min typical price × volume. Unofficial, may be delayed (Yahoo chart API).
Previous slots today: 09:00 (INTC print, REGN/ABBV/XOM/CVX BMO prints), 10:00 (OR30 checks, telecom, LLY, software split, next week's calendar), 11:00 (semis rout and cluster-1 prints Tue–Thu). This hour covers the Monday 11-02 AMC reporters, which the 11:00 report only listed. They are the first prints of next week and the only ones whose pre-print exposure includes the weekend.

1. Focus and why

Four universe names report Monday after the close: PLTR, AAPL, ON and VRTX (TRAI /api/events: tradingDaysUntil 1, sessionsToReaction 2, gap risk elevated). A position opened today in any of them carries two days of weekend news plus Monday's session before the print, and the reaction lands Tuesday 11-03. The tape into the weekend is a broad AI-capex rout: the Nasdaq hit a near three-month low after Amazon's capex plan and Intel's cash-burn warning (Reuters via Yahoo, 2026-10-30).

2. The four names at 12:02 ET (vs 10-29 close)

Context: SPY −1.59%, QQQ −3.20%, SMH −6.89%, IGV −3.07%; SNOW −9.52%, MCHP −4.81%, ADI −4.21%, TXN −3.52% (Yahoo 5-min, 12:02 ET). None of the four is in today's TRAI candidate buckets (long momentum: CVNA, CMG, MO, DASH, BA; mean reversion: GE, LOW, CRM, GILD, HD).

3. PLTR (Palantir): data/AI software; Gotham (government), Foundry and AIP (commercial)

  • Q3 guide (2026-08-03): revenue $2.160–2.164B; adj. operating income $1.292–1.296B. FY26 guide revenue $8.150–8.158B (+82%), US commercial > $3.424B (+134%), adj. FCF $4.5–4.7B (Palantir IR, Q2 2026 release).
  • Consensus: Q3 revenue ~$2.18B and EPS $0.41 (TokenPost; Motley Fool, 2026-10-30). GuruFocus quotes a $0.46 EPS figure (GuruFocus); the gap between the two EPS figures is unresolved. FY26 consensus $8.22B is above the top of guidance, and the current FY guide implies roughly $2.4B for Q4 (TIKR, 2026-10-30).
  • Beat habit: revenue beats vs its own guide of $76M (Q4-25), $97M (Q1-26), $134M (Q2-26). Forward P/E rose from 74x (end-June) to 103x while 2027 EPS estimates rose 13% (TIKR). Q2: US commercial $764M (+149%); remaining deal value +83% to $13.1B (TIKR).
  • Positioning into the print: Oppenheimer (10-29) expects a beat and raise; J.P. Morgan initiated Overweight, $262 Dec-2027 target (TIKR). Options imply ~11% (GuruFocus, date of options read not given). Shares +57% since the Q2 print (Motley Fool).
  • TRAI reaction history: last 4 prints avg |gap| 9.61% = 2.23 ATR, 0% gap fill (TRAI /api/events). This is the largest expected gap of the four, and it sits in the cluster being sold today (NET/SNOW/ZS/TEAM).
  • Read: with consensus already above the guide, an in-line beat-and-raise may not be enough; the Q4 guide versus ~$2.4B and US commercial growth are what moves the gap (TIKR's argument, not tested here).

4. AAPL (Apple): FY26 Q4 (quarter 6/28–9/26)

  • Timing: results 1:30 PM PT / 4:30 PM ET, call 5:00 PM ET Monday (Apple IR; MacRumors, 2026-10-06). First call for CEO John Ternus.
  • Guide: revenue +9–11% ($111.7–113.7B), iPhone growth mid-teens (supply-constrained), GM 47–48% incl. ~1 pt tariff refunds, FX ~2.5 pt headwind (iThinkDiff). Consensus ~$113.1–113.3B revenue and EPS $1.98–1.99 (iThinkDiff; Benzinga), near the top of the guide.
  • Risks flagged: memory costs (IDC puts them up ~350% y/y per iThinkDiff); Nikkei reported Apple cut October iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max component orders 15–20%, which JPMorgan attributes to a new launch cadence (Benzinga); Loop Capital downgraded to Hold, modelling 79M December-quarter iPhones vs 85M Street (iThinkDiff). The quarter holds only nine days of iPhone 18 Pro sales and no iPhone Duo, so the December-quarter guide matters more than the print.
  • Margin check: June-quarter GM 50.1% had ~2 pts of tariff refunds; ex-refund products GM ~37% is an estimate by Financial Report Insights, not a company figure.
  • Today: −0.77%, holding up vs QQQ −3.20%. This repeats the anti-AI-capex pattern in the AAPL note (negative 60d ρ to AMZN/VRT/NVDA).
  • TRAI: last-4 avg |gap| 3.65% (1.62 ATR), fill 50%; the 2026-07-30 print gapped −8.58% on a Services slowdown and supply warning. Still fails TRAI's ATR% < 2% liquidity screen as of 10-23.

5. ON (onsemi): power and sensing semis (SiC, auto, industrial, AI data-center power)

  • Timing: Q3 (ended 2026-10-02) after close Monday, call 5:00 PM ET (onsemi IR, 2026-10-15).
  • Guide (2026-08-03): revenue $1.65–1.75B, non-GAAP GM 40–42%, EPS $0.81–0.93 (Tickeron). Consensus: Zacks $0.88 / $1.71B (Yahoo/Zacks, 2026-10-28); MarketBeat $0.877 / $1.70B (MarketBeat); Tickeron cites LSEG at ~$1.67B / $0.83–0.84. Consensus sources disagree; the Zacks/MarketBeat figures are more recent.
  • Segment estimates (Zacks): Automotive $819M (+4%), Industrial $433M (+1.5%), Other $443M (+31.5%). AI data-center revenue is expected to more than double in 2026; China auto SiC +60–70% (Tickeron, management commentary as relayed).
  • History: 6 of the last 8 EPS beats (MarketBeat). Rose ~5% after the Q2 print, then drifted ~15% lower (Tickeron).
  • Today: −5.87%, below VWAP, falling with ADI/TXN/MCHP in the analog group. This is the S-086 pre-print sympathy set-up again. TRAI's ON history is unusually tame (avg |gap| 0.52 ATR, 100% fill), so today's ~6% drop is already more than twice its average print gap.

6. VRTX (Vertex): cystic fibrosis franchise (Trikafta, Alyftrek), Casgevy, Journavx

  • Timing: Q3 after close Monday, call 4:30 PM ET (Vertex newsroom, 2026-10-07).
  • Consensus: $3.40B revenue, $4.92 EPS; Trikafta/Kaftrio est. $2.49B (Yahoo/Zacks, 2026-10-27). drillr cites $3.413B / $4.76 as of 10-16 (drillr); EPS figures differ by source.
  • FY26 guide: $13.1–13.2B (raised 08-03), ex-Crinetics; FY consensus $13.247B, above the top (drillr). Q2: Alyftrek $573.6M, Trikafta $2.497B (−2%); Journavx $50M (+71% q/q) (Vertex IR, Q2 2026).
  • Next catalyst after the print: povetacicept (IgAN) FDA decision expected 2026-11-30 (Zacks).
  • Today: +3.44% with the defensive pharma bid (10:00 report). TRAI history: avg |gap| 0.95% (0.43 ATR), the smallest in the group.

7. Analysis and calls

  1. Gap-risk ranking for Tuesday's reaction: PLTR (by far) > AAPL > ON > VRTX, using TRAI's last-4 avg |gap| in ATR terms. For PLTR the options-implied ~11% is above its 9.6% average.
  2. Weekend exposure: these four are the only universe names whose print falls after a weekend. Any long or short opened Friday carries weekend macro risk. The 10:00 report flagged midterms timing and Iran-strike headlines as unverified weekend factors. TRAI's events window counts trading days, so it shows these as "1 day until", which understates the calendar exposure.
  3. Cluster spillover: a PLTR gap Tuesday would likely move NET/SNOW/ZS/TEAM/NOW (ρ 0.51–0.59), and NET and TEAM report Thursday. ON's print reads across to ADI/TXN/MCHP; MCHP reports Thursday.
  4. Not actionable for today's candidates: no bucket name reports Monday. No catalyst changes gap risk on a current candidate.

8. Research partner (whiggity) input

Consulted in a new Monica chat ("Monday Earnings and Weekend Gap Risk", ~12:05 ET; the first generation errored and Monica retried). whiggity's links were mostly Google redirects with no dates, so everything below is from whiggity and is either checked against a public source here or marked unverified.

  • Rejected, contradicted by the company: whiggity said ON reports BMO Monday. onsemi's own release says results come after market close Mon 11-02 with a 5:00 PM ET call (onsemi IR, 2026-10-15). ON stays in the AMC set, and its Q4 (ON-leads-Monday-semis) idea below does not apply.
  • Partly verified: the iPhone Duo framing (Pro order cuts may reflect mix and cadence) matches JPMorgan's view as relayed by Benzinga. whiggity's claim that the Duo was unveiled 09-10 and Ternus took over 09-01 is unverified. The verified facts are that the Duo went on sale 10-23 and this is Ternus's first call.
  • Unverified (open questions): PLTR "whisper" $2.21–2.23B (from an asserted 2.5–4% habitual beat; TIKR's verified beats were $76M/$97M/$134M, i.e. about 4–7% on recent guides); povetacicept RUBY-3 52% UPCR reduction; ON's Q2 revenue $1.604B (consistent with the $1.60B in Tickeron).
  • Weekend and Monday calendar from whiggity (unverified here): China NBS and Caixin manufacturing PMIs over the weekend; China October EV deliveries Sun 11-01 (reads across to ON's SiC exposure); US ISM Manufacturing Mon 11-02 at 10:00 ET; midterm elections Tue 11-03, the reaction day for all four prints. The midterms also appeared in the Yahoo/Bloomberg piece cited in the 10:00 report. Month-end rebalancing at today's close.
  • Peers to watch (from whiggity): ON with STM, Infineon, WOLF, MPWR; AAPL with QCOM/SWKS/QRVO and memory (MU/WDC); PLTR with SNOW/DDOG/MDB/NOW and federal IT (BAH/LDOS); VRTX with IgAN peers (VERA, NVS). Most are outside TRAI's universe.
  • Test ideas (from whiggity, untested): see S-090 in strategy.md.

9. Strategy proposals (see strategy.md)

  • S-088 (proposal): calendar-day gap-risk window, so Friday entries in names that print Monday AMC (or earlier on the next trading day) are flagged as carrying weekend exposure.
  • S-090 (needs data, from whiggity): Friday-capitulation gap skew, IV-rich gap-and-go, and defensive pre-print fade tests.
  • S-089 (needs data): does a ≥2× ATR pre-print sympathy drop shrink or flip a name's own print gap? ON today (−5.9% vs 0.52 ATR avg gap) is the test case; extends S-086.

10. Unknowns

  • PLTR Q3 EPS consensus ($0.41 vs $0.46) and the date of the ~11% options read. ON consensus (LSEG $0.83–0.84 vs Zacks $0.88). VRTX EPS consensus ($4.76 vs $4.92).
  • No verified weekend macro calendar here; BLS payrolls timing unverified (as in the 10:00 report).
  • Correlations are stale (to 10-22).
