2026-10-30 14:00 ET: TRAI's "stress" label is now live (VIX9D/VIX > 1 since 13:50), and the rate-sensitive complex splits: banks sold on equity beta, utilities and housing bid on duration, HD/LOW rate beta, and the Friday→Monday set-up
Slot: Fri 2026-10-30 14:00 ET hourly research. Status: draft, written ~14:00–14:35 ET; whiggity consult folded in ~14:20 ET (§9). Screening/research, not investment advice.

Intraday quotes: Yahoo chart API 5-min bars, last bar 14:14 ET (indices/vol/yields to 13:59 ET), vs the 10-29 close; VWAP from 5-min typical price × volume. Unofficial, may be delayed (Yahoo chart API). Daily-bar statistics are my calculations from Yahoo daily bars (2016-10 to 2026-10-29).
Previous slots today: 09:00 (INTC, crypto, BMO prints), 10:00 (OR30 checks, telecom/pharma/software), 11:00 (semis rout, cluster-1 prints), 12:00 (Monday AMC prints), 13:00 (VIX near the stress line, metals, oil, SPOT). This hour does not repeat those. It covers what changed in the vol regime since 13:00, the rates/Fed channel, banks, utilities and housing (none covered as a theme today), HD/LOW's rate sensitivity, and the Friday-signal / Monday-gap set-up.
1. Focus and why
- The engine's stress condition has now printed. VIX9D/VIX crossed 1.0 on the 13:50 bar (VIX 21.76, VIX9D 21.88, ratio 1.0055) and was 1.008 at 13:59 (VIX 21.79, VIX9D 21.96). VIX's day high is 21.89, 0.11 pt below the 22 risk-halving line. The 13:00 report flagged this as one tick away. It is now live.
- The Fed is hawkish, yet yields are falling. Dallas Fed's Logan said today the FOMC needs "at least two more 25-basis-point rate increases". The 10y is still −5.6bp (4.933%) because the tech sell-off is pushing money into Treasuries.
- The "rate-sensitive" complex is not moving as one block today. Banks are down 2–5% even though yields are lower. Utilities are up 1.3–2.5%. HD/LOW (TRAI fade-shorts) are flat to +1%. To know what drives each name into Monday, you have to separate the duration factor from equity beta.
- Monday's calendar is rates-heavy: ISM 10:00, then Treasury refunding estimates at 15:00. HD/LOW have the biggest rate beta of any candidate.
2. Volatility: the stress label has fired (actionable)
| Gauge (Yahoo, 13:59 ET) | Last | Prev close | Chg | Day high |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ^VIX | 21.79 | 17.20 | +26.7% | 21.89 |
| ^VIX9D | 21.96 | 15.87 | +38.4% | 22.18 |
| ^VIX3M | 21.95 | 19.37 | +13.3% | 21.99 |
| VIX9D/VIX | 1.008 | 0.854 (8:53 run) | first > 1 at 13:50 (1.0055) | |
| VIX/VIX3M | 0.993 | 0.960 (8:53 run) |
- Path since 13:00: VIX9D/VIX was 0.995 at 13:00, 1.000 at 13:05, 0.990–0.999 from 13:10 to 13:45, then 1.0055 at 13:50 and 1.0028 at 13:55 (5-min closes). VIX/VIX3M at 0.993 means the 3-month part of the curve is now close to flat too. At 13:00 it was 0.974.
- What the engine would do (
lib/engine.ts): if VIX9D/VIX is still > 1 at the run time, tonight's postclose run labels the regime stress.riskPerTradePctstays at 0.25% unless VIX > 22 (L180). The Glossary says stress halves risk (S-092, open). The dashboard still shows the 8:53 run (S-091). - How the replay treated stress-labelled signal days (TRAI
/api/scorecard; 8 signal days, mostly the 2026-06-05…06-17 cluster; open→close, gross): - long momentum: n 9 (2 days), mean +1.87%, hit 78%
- MR fade-short: n 28, mean +1.00%, hit 75%
- MR fade-long: n 35, mean +0.49%, hit 54%
- short momentum: n 25, mean +0.15%, hit 56%
The all-days figures are +0.18% / +0.15% / +0.22% / −0.41%. The sample is tiny and clustered in one episode, so this is not evidence that stress improves edge. It is a reason not to read "stress" as "stop trading" without testing (S-098).
3. Rates and the Fed: hawkish talk, falling yields
- FOMC (10-28): held at 3.75–4.00%, vote 10–2. Cook and Hammack dissented, both in favor of a 25bp hike (Federal Reserve statement, 2026-10-28; CNBC, 2026-10-28). The FOMC raised 25bp in September and skipped this week (Logan, below).
- Logan today (Davidson College, 2026-10-30):
- "the FOMC needs to implement at least two more 25-basis-point rate increases", then pause.
- The funds range is "at least 50 basis points … below the level that would create some modest restriction".
- Core PCE was 3.1% y/y through September.
- The 10y is up "nearly a full percentage point" in 2026.
- "Credit spreads widened in recent weeks but remain compressed by historical standards. Banks remain eager to lend."
Source: Dallas Fed, 2026-10-30. The release time of the remarks is not stated, so the market reaction can't be timed.
- Other Fed speakers today: Cook and Hammack were scheduled to explain their dissents (~08:00), Barkin 09:30, Daly 12:00, Musalem 12:30. Newsquawk also carried a Waller headline: more hikes likely, flexible on pace (Newsquawk primer, 2026-10-30 11:20 UTC). I didn't confirm what each speaker said beyond Logan's text. The 13:00 report cites ~82% odds of a Dec 9 hike (FHLBNY, Thursday forwards).
- Treasuries (Yahoo, 13:59):
- 10y 4.933% (−5.6bp), 5y 4.725% (−7.6bp), 30y 5.313% (−1.6bp), 13-week bill 3.978% (−2bp). The belly is leading, so the curve bull-steepened.
- The 10y traded in a 4.92–4.95% band all day. The hawkish speeches did not lift it.
- Reuters: the 2y was −5.4bp at 4.602% (12:09 ET), and the 10y is on track for its biggest monthly decline since late 2023 as the tech sell-off pushes investors into safe havens (Reuters via Euronext, 2026-10-30).
- Credit: HYG −0.31%, below its OR30 low. TRAI
/api/macro(asOf 10-22) already showed HYG/IEF −2.49 pts over a month. That fits Logan's "spreads widened". - Mortgages: Freddie Mac's 30-year rate was 7.24% on 10-29 (from 7.32%; 6.17% a year ago). It is published Thursdays at 12:00 ET, so the next print is Thu 11-05 (Freddie Mac PMMS, 2026-10-29).
4. Rate beta: who is actually a "rates" trade (my calc)
2026 YTD daily regression (n 208, to 10-29): return = a + b·SPY + c·Δ10y, where c is % per 10bp rise in the 10y (Yahoo ^TNX). Negative c means the name rises when yields fall.

- HD/LOW have as much rate beta as the homebuilder ETFs. They are the most rate-sensitive names in today's buckets. Their 60d ρ to the big banks is ~0 (HD–JPM 0.06, LOW–BAC 0.01). Their ρ to the utilities is 0.35–0.47 (TRAI
/api/correlations, asOf 10-22). In TRAI's data they behave like a duration trade, not a "financials/rates" trade. - Banks have no meaningful 10y beta in 2026. Big-bank moves are equity beta plus capital-markets sentiment (GS/MS b ≈ 1.6–1.7).
- Today's check. Model-implied moves are b × SPY (−2.11%) + c × (−0.56):
- HD: model +0.33%, actual +0.16%
- LOW: model +0.59%, actual +1.11%
- GS: model −3.6%, actual −4.8%
- DUK: model +1.6%, actual +1.7%
- XHB: model −0.6%, actual −0.6%
Most of the day is explained by the two factors. GS's residual (~−1.2pp) is the one gap worth explaining (§5).
5. Banks and brokers: sold as equity beta, not rates
| Name | Chg | vs OR30 | vs VWAP | Name | Chg | vs OR30 | vs VWAP | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GS | −4.82% | below | −0.91% | COF | −2.80% | below | −0.82% | |
| C | −3.58% | inside (at low) | −0.71% | BAC | −2.41% | below | −0.63% | |
| MS | −3.29% | below | −0.94% | JPM | −2.01% | below | −0.63% | |
| BLK | −3.07% | below | −1.19% | SCHW | −1.99% | below | −0.82% | |
| BX | −1.95% | below | −0.59% | WFC | −1.82% | below | −0.49% | |
| AXP | −1.78% | below | −0.61% | KKR | −1.50% | below | −0.70% |
XLF −0.84%, KRE −1.37%, BRK-B +0.45%. Yahoo 5-min, 14:14 ET. Most names opened up (JPM +0.50%, WFC +0.29%, SCHW +0.27%) and sold off into the afternoon with SPY.
- No bank-specific news found today. The context is all older:
- Q3 bank results (week of 10-13): "dealmaking … slowed in the third quarter and dented investment banking". JPM posted a rare profit miss, and the beats were judged smaller than before (Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-10-15).
- The KBW Bank Index was ~13% below its August record in its longest weekly losing streak since 2008, and had underperformed the S&P in 18 of 21 sessions since the Sept 16 hike (Barclays' Goldberg). Bloomberg Intelligence: "higher-for-longer … raising the risk of slower economic growth and higher loan losses" (Bloomberg via Moneycontrol, 2026-10-17).
- So the hike channel works through credit and growth fears, not net interest margin. That fits the ~0 rate beta in §4.
- Rejected source: a GMT Eight flash that attributes a bank sell-off to Bank of America's CEO saying trading revenue would be "relatively flat". Its dating is inconsistent: it is stamped 31/10, describes "Monday", and refers to a Barclays conference that is normally held in September. Not used. A TradingKey GS piece reads as auto-generated and gives no source for its claims. Not used.
- Linkages that matter for candidates:
- Cluster 8 (KKR, BX, BA, BLK, AXP, COF; avg ρ 0.582). BA's top 60d ρ are COF 0.63, AXP 0.57 and BLK 0.54. The BA note called this a probable beta artifact. Today it held: BA −1.11% while COF fell −2.80%, AXP −1.78% and BLK −3.07%.
- Cluster 7 (C, GS, MS, BAC, JPM, WFC; ρ 0.632): GS–MS 0.89 (TRAI).
- GE's top links include C 0.42, GS 0.40 and COF 0.40. GE is −3.64%, which helps the fade-short.
- Next bank catalysts: none scheduled in the universe. TRAI's next bank prints are 2027-01-14 onward. BRK-B is due 2026-11-07, a Saturday, timing "unknown", estimated (TRAI
/api/events). Berkshire historically reports Saturday mornings, so the reaction would land Monday 11-09. That is the S-088 calendar-day case again, and TRAI's average gap is small (0.52 ATR). APO reports Tue 11-03 BMO (financials note, IR-verified 10-23). Blue Owl beat on Q3 today with record AUM of $330B (MarketScreener, 2026-10-30). OWL is not in the universe.
6. Utilities: the duration bid plus the defensive rotation
- Moves (14:14 ET):
- NEE +2.49%: above its OR30 high, +0.61% vs VWAP
- DUK +1.66% and SO +1.25%: inside OR30, above VWAP
- XLU +1.03%
- CEG −1.15% and VST −2.72%: these trade with the AI-power complex, not the regulated group
- Why: cluster 13 (NEE, DUK, SO; avg ρ 0.805; DUK–SO 0.91) combines negative SPY beta with ~−1%/10bp rate beta (§4), so a −2% SPY / −5.6bp tape lines up both factors in its favor. Reuters (11:52 ET) had staples and healthcare leading the defensive rotation, and healthcare at a record (Reuters via Devdiscourse, 2026-10-30). No company-specific NEE news today. Q3 was reported 10-21 (NEE Q3 release).
- Catalysts:
- DUK Q3 Thu 11-05, call 10:00 ET (Duke Energy IR).
- SO 11-05 BMO, VST 11-06 BMO, CEG 11-09 BMO (TRAI
/api/events; SO/VST/CEG dates not separately IR-checked here). - Last-4 average gaps: DUK 0.56% (0.32 ATR), SO 1.91% (1.01 ATR), VST 1.49% (0.30 ATR), NEE 1.63% (0.91 ATR) (TRAI).
- Link to a candidate: MO–DUK ρ 0.56, MO–SO 0.47. MO's long-momentum bid is partly this same defensive/duration factor (MO c = −0.79%/10bp, b = −0.81). A rates back-up on Monday (strong ISM) would hit MO and the utilities together.
7. Housing and HD/LOW: what drives them into Monday
- The 10-29 move had three drivers (all sourced):
- The 10y fell 5.6bp (5.045 → 4.989; Yahoo).
- Freddie Mac cut to 7.24% (§3).
- D.R. Horton's FY-Q4 (10-29): EPS $2.67 vs $3.02 est., guiding to as few as 79,000 FY27 closings vs ~84,000 this year, with incentives staying high. The CEO said expecting rates to fall is "imprudent". Shares still rose as much as 2.2% (Bloomberg via Mortgage News Media, 2026-10-30).
- XHB +3.37%, ITB +3.49%, HD +3.60%, LOW +4.48% that day (Yahoo daily). This was a rates relief rally into weak builder fundamentals.
- Today:
- HD +0.16%: opened +1.33%, so −1.15% open→now; inside OR30 (+0.12…+1.77%), −0.17% vs VWAP.
- LOW +1.11%: opened +1.42%, inside OR30, +0.19% vs VWAP.
- XHB −0.63% (below OR30), ITB +0.30%, DHI −0.61%, LEN +1.35%.
Both are back inside their OR30 after breaking below it at 10:13 (10:00 report). LOW has held better than HD. The fade-short has worked for HD from the open. LOW has given back little.
- Fundamental backdrop:
- Both hit 52-week lows in early October.
- Lowe's cut its FY outlook to the bottom of its range, about $92B in sales (roughly flat y/y), and Q3 EPS is expected down ~7% y/y.
- Home Depot cited housing affordability and low turnover.
- Analysts rate both Moderate Buy, with targets ~$375 (HD) and ~$253 (LOW).
Source: MarketBeat, 2026-10-11; secondary, figures as relayed.
- Next prints: HD Tue 11-17 BMO, call 9:00 ET (Home Depot IR). LOW Wed 11-18 BMO, call 9:00 ET (Lowe's newsroom; "tentative"). Both are outside TRAI's 5-day window, so their gap risk comes from macro over the next two weeks, not from earnings.
- Typical reaction after a rate-driven up day (my calc, 2016–2026; days with a ≥ +3% close-to-close gain and the 10y down ≥ 3bp the same day, not earnings-filtered):
| n | Next-day gap (mean) | Next-day o→c (mean / median) | Down | 2-day c/c (median) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HD | 25 | −0.03% | +0.06% / +0.59% | 44% | +0.49% |
| LOW | 37 | −0.16% | +0.12% / +0.16% | 43% | −0.10% |
Over ten years there is no fade edge after these days. October 2026 is the exception: next-day o→c was HD −1.44% / LOW −1.33% after 10-08 and HD −1.59% / LOW −1.60% after 10-22, and today HD is −1.15% from the open. 10-22 is the closest analog, a −19bp 10y day (5.146 → 4.953) with HD +4.33% and LOW +3.97%. n is small, and the recent pattern may simply track the 10y's direction the next day.
- TRAI replay: fade-shorts in HD made o→c +0.69% (n 4) and in LOW +0.84% (n 5), with hit rates of 75% and 80% (
/api/scorecard, 2026-04 to 10).
8. Candidates at 14:14 ET, the Friday-signal effect, and the Monday gap

| MO | LM long | +2.15% | inside | +0.13% | −0.79 | defensive/duration factor (§6) |
| DASH | LM long | +0.54% | inside | −0.68% | −0.57 | |
| BA | LM long | −1.11% | below | −0.67% | −1.03 | cluster-8 drag (§5); S-082 drop |
| GE | MR fade-short | −3.64% | below | −1.37% | −1.07 | working; new low of day |
| HD / LOW | MR fade-short | +0.16% / +1.11% | inside | −0.17% / +0.19% | −1.99 / −2.07 | one position (S-078) |
| GILD | MR fade-short | +4.01% | inside | +0.02% | −1.08 | skip stands (S-077) |
| CRM | MR fade-long | −0.51% | inside | −0.33% | −0.32 |
Indices: SPY −2.11%, QQQ −4.02%, both below VWAP. No candidate had a new company catalyst in the last hour. I searched for BA, GE, CVNA, CMG and DASH; the items found were the 10-29 stories already covered, plus BA parts deals with Lufthansa Technik and Etihad (AeroTime, 2026-10-30), which are not price-moving.
Friday-signal effect in TRAI's replay (/api/scorecard). The signal is taken at the day-d close, so Friday signals trade Monday open→close. "c/c" adds the weekend gap.
| Bucket | Friday signals (n / Fridays) | o→c mean | hit | c/c mean | Mon–Thu signals o→c mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long momentum | 121 / 16 | +0.57% | 58% | +1.39% | +0.01% |
| MR fade-short | 36 / 15 | −0.25% | 50% | −0.31% | +0.20% |
| MR fade-long | 33 / 9 | −0.47% | 39% | +1.20% | +0.34% |
| Short momentum | 102 / 20 | −0.52% | 47% | −1.01% | −0.38% |
Six months of mostly transitional, rising-market regime. Gross, survivorship-biased (the replay uses today's universe). The pattern is suggestive, not established (S-097). Taken at face value, tonight's long-momentum picks are the better Monday set-up, and Monday fade-shorts have been the weak leg.
Monday gap after a "VIX-spike Friday" (my calc; Fridays with VIX +≥15% close-to-close, closing 18–26; n 13, 2019–2026):

The baseline over all 451 Friday→Monday pairs: SPY +0.02%, XLF −0.02%, XLU −0.04%, HD −0.01%. The usual outcome is a small bounce, led by high-beta financials (GS median +0.89%), with fat left tails (2024-08-02 → 08-05). Defensives (XLU, DUK, MO) gap least, and MO tends to lag the rebound. This matches the 13:00 SPY study.

8a. Analysis and calls
- Sizing (actionable today): TRAI's own stress condition (VIX9D/VIX > 1) has been met since 13:50, and VIX is 0.1 pt from the hard halving line. The engine evaluates only at runs, so the Checklist governs live entries. Apply 0.125% risk to any new entry before 3:55 ET. The code would keep 0.25% unless VIX > 22, but the Glossary says stress halves risk (S-092). Expect tonight's postclose run to show stress if the ratio holds at the close. 14:20 update: VIX printed 22.10 on the 14:00 bar (22.06 at 14:05), so the code's VIX > 22 halving is now met too. If VIX is still above 22 at the run, tonight's run would itself set 0.125%.
- HD/LOW are a rates trade with Monday macro risk. At ~−2%/10bp, a 10bp move in the 10y after Monday's ISM (10:00) or the refunding estimates (15:00) is worth about ±2% on HD/LOW. That is close to one ATR (2.3–2.5%) and larger than a typical intraday fade target. Their earnings are 2½ weeks away, so the gap risk comes from macro. If tonight's run keeps them in mean_reversion, a Monday fade-short sits in the weakest Friday-signal leg (§8) and is exposed to the 10:00 ISM print. Weak ISM → lower yields → against the short.
- Banks are equity beta, not rates. "Hawkish Fed → banks up" is not how 2026 has traded (c ≈ 0). The cluster-7/8 sell-off is the same risk-off move as SPY (GS b 1.7). It reaches the candidates through BA (cluster 8: below OR30, below VWAP; S-082 says drop) and GE (helps the short).
- Utilities and MO share a factor. The defensive bid is a combined negative-beta and duration trade. MO's long works as long as yields stay down and SPY stays weak. A Monday risk-on gap (the median outcome in §8) would likely make MO lag; MO's Monday gap was up only 38% of the time after VIX-spike Fridays.
- Flat by 3:55 still holds: no candidate is carried over the weekend, so the Monday-gap tables are inputs for tonight's run and Monday's opening plan, not for holding positions.
Strategy proposals (see [strategy.md](../strategy.md)):
- S-096 (proposal): show each candidate's 2-factor rate beta (%/10bp, controlling for SPY), and count candidates with |c| > 1.5 as one shared "duration" exposure. Add scheduled rate catalysts (ISM, refunding, JOLTS, NFP, PMMS) to the gap-risk window for those names. This extends S-078, S-085 and S-088.
- S-097 (needs data): the Friday-signal effect. LM long o→c +0.57% vs +0.01% Mon–Thu, and MR fade-short −0.25% vs +0.20%. Test on a longer replay split by regime before any rule.
- S-099 (needs data, from whiggity §9): HD/LOW rotation-rally follow-through, curve-shape-conditioned rate beta, post-print leader vs peer pair.
- S-098 (needs data): how do the buckets behave on stress-labelled signal days (fade-short n 28, +1.00%, mostly one June episode)? Test before letting the stress label cut risk (it interacts with S-092/S-094).
9. Research partner (whiggity)
Consulted in a new Monica chat ("Rate Sensitive Markets Into Mondays Open", ~14:10 ET). whiggity gave no usable citations. It cited no dated sources. Its one footnote linked to gilead.com/careers, which is irrelevant. It also flagged its own CVNA and DASH dates as needing confirmation. Rule for this section: a point is kept only if I could check it against a public source with a link and a date. Everything else is listed below as an open question, unverified. Quotes were refreshed ~14:20 ET (Yahoo chart API 5-min, vs the 10-29 close).
Verified, corrected or contradicted (attributed to whiggity):
- Earnings dates (mixed).
- HD ~Nov 17: verified. Tue 11-17 BMO (Home Depot IR; TRAI
/api/events, not an estimate). - LOW "~a week later": wrong. Lowe's reports Wed 11-18 BMO, the day after HD (Lowe's newsroom; the company marks it "tentative").
- CRM late Nov/early Dec: plausible but unverified. TRAI
/api/eventshas 12-02 as an estimate, and third-party calendars list Wed 12-02 AMC as tentative. I found no Salesforce IR announcement. - DASH "first week of Nov (11/4 or 11/5)": wrong. DoorDash already reported Q3 on 10-29: 8-K "Date of Report: October 29, 2026" (SEC 8-K; DoorDash IR). That print is why DASH is a long-momentum candidate. TRAI
/api/eventsrecords it, with a +5.68% gap on 10-29. - CVNA "reported this week with a big beat" (date verified; "big beat" only half right). Carvana reported Wed 10-28 after the close, with a call at 5:30 PM ET. Results: retail units 217,385 (+39%), revenue $8.040B (+42%), net income $483M (6.0% margin), adj. EBITDA $800M. But the adj. EBITDA margin fell to 10.0% from 11.3%, and diluted EPS was $0.39 vs ~$0.44 consensus, a miss (TRAI
/api/eventssurprise −12.2%). Source: Carvana Q3 letter, SEC 8-K Ex. 99.1, 2026-10-28. The beat was in volume, not EPS. - The letter also supports whiggity's rate/oil channel. Carvana says "elevated fuel prices and rapidly rising benchmark interest rates" cost ~$200 per unit in Q3. This matches CVNA's −2.00%/10bp rate beta (§4).
- GILD Q3 10-29 "with $1.79B net income": the date is right, the figure is wrong. GILD reported Thu 10-29 AMC. GAAP net income was $2,429M (diluted EPS $1.94), and non-GAAP net income was $3,186M (EPS $2.55). Product sales were $8.3B (+13%). Source: Gilead release via Business Wire, 2026-10-29. The $1.79B figure doesn't match any line in the release.
- "Banks sell off on oil/inflation-driven bear-flattening hike repricing": contradicted by today's tape and by 2026 data.
- Today's curve bull-steepened: 2y −5.4bp, 5y −8.1bp, 10y −6bp (4.929%) at ~14:05 ET (§3). Banks fell anyway: XLF −0.96%, KRE −1.45%, GS −4.8%.
- In 2026 YTD, big banks have ~0 rate beta (§4). Today's selling was equity beta.
- The "regionals most vulnerable" point fits only weakly. KRE's rate beta is −0.49%/10bp (t −2.5), against ~0 for JPM/BAC, so regionals do carry a little more rate risk. But today the brokers and money-centers (GS/MS/C) fell far more than KRE.
- Deposit-beta, AFS/HTM and provision mechanics were not checked (no Q3 bank data pulled this hour).
- Utilities as bond proxies: consistent with my data. XLU, DUK, SO and NEE have rate betas of about −0.9 to −1.06%/10bp, and XLU is +1.04% today (§4, §6). The REIT sub-claims are unverified: levered or floating-rate REITs hit hardest, and self-storage, industrial and data-center REITs plus pass-through utilities show lower downside beta after 48h. I ran no REIT betas.
- "HD/LOW catch defensive value-rotation bids during tech liquidations": partly consistent, but rates explain it. With SPY −2.27% and QQQ −4.2%, HD is +0.11% and LOW +1.00%. The 2-factor model (low SPY beta 0.27–0.37 plus the yield drop) already predicts that (§4).
- Intraday, HD has fallen ~1.2% from its open while the 10y sat in a 4.92–4.95% band. The 10-29 move was the rates rally.
- The "lock-in effect supports repair-in-place spend" claim is unverified as a driver. Home Depot itself cited low housing turnover and affordability as a headwind (MarketBeat, §7).
- GE/BA and $105 oil (oil level verified; the mechanism fits the tape). CL1 is ~$104.8 (13:00 report §4). Airlines are down (DAL −3.3%, UAL −3.25% at ~13:19), and GE is −3.64%. BA's weakness is better explained by its cluster-8 financials link (§5). The defense/Hormuz/midterm angle is unverified.
- MO's dividend vs short-end yields: the direction fits, the specific channel is untested. MO is +2.15% with yields lower (rate beta −0.79%/10bp, SPY beta −0.81). That is the defensive/duration factor in §6. Whether short-end yields matter more than the 10y was not tested.
- "Oil-driven front-end hikes can cap or lower the 10y": not what happened today. Logan was hawkish (§3), but the 2y also fell. The whole curve rallied on haven flows, so there was no flattening via the front end.
- CVNA vs non-reporting peers: today's tape agrees, n = 1. CVNA +1.65%, KMX −1.41%, ALLY −4.19%. One day, no test.
Open questions from whiggity (unverified, not used in §8a):
- Do levered or floating-rate REITs carry the biggest downside rate beta, and do self-storage, industrial and data-center REITs and pass-through utilities recover after ~48h?
- Does the mortgage "lock-in effect" support HD/LOW repair-and-remodel spend enough to offset low turnover?
- Do midterm-gridlock outcomes spark a post-election Treasury relief rally? Does forced de-grossing rotate into under-owned large-cap value (HD/LOW short covering)?
- Sympathy baskets (as given, none tested): HD/LOW with SHW, MAS, FBIN, BLDR, FND, DHI, LEN, PHM; CVNA with KMX, AN, ALLY, COF, UPST; GE/BA with RTX, HWM, TDG, LHX, LMT; CMG/DASH with UBER, CART, CAVA, WING, SBUX; GILD/MO with AMGN, ABBV, BMY, PM, BTI, KO.
- Quant questions:
- (1) HD/LOW > +3% days with the 2y up and QQQ/SMH ≤ −1.5%: what are the 1/3/5-day forward returns, conditional on a close in the top quartile of the day's range? This is a rotation rally, not a rates rally, so it differs from the §7 study. → S-099(1)
- (2) Fridays with VIX9D/VIX ≈ 1 and VIX 19–24 before a tier-1 macro week: Fri 14:00 → Mon 10:30 change, and SPY gaps. → duplicate of S-094 and the §8 VIX-spike-Friday gap study; not added.
- (3) Rate-sensitive basket beta under bear-flattening vs bear-steepening with WTI > $95. → S-099(2), extends S-096.
- (4) Post-earnings leader (CVNA) vs non-reporting peers (KMX/ALLY), as a 3–5 day pair in hawkish regimes. → S-099(3); generalizes S-050.
- (5) Fridays with gold ≤ −1.5%, copper ≤ −1.5%, SMH ≤ −2% and WTI ≥ +2%: Monday gap by beta decile. → duplicate of S-093/S-095; not added.
Net effect on §8a: none of whiggity's points changes the calls. Its bank framing ("bear-flattening hurts banks") does not fit today's tape, and three of its checkable facts were wrong (LOW date, DASH date, GILD net income), while the HD, CVNA and GILD dates were right. The CVNA letter's ~$200/unit rate-and-fuel hit backs the §4 rate-beta view of CVNA. Separate update from my own 14:20 quote refresh: VIX printed 22.10 on the 14:00 bar (22.06 at 14:05, day high 22.13), so it is above the 22 line in lib/engine.ts L180. VIX9D/VIX is 1.014 and VIX/VIX3M ≈ 1.00. Half risk (0.125%) is now backed by the code as well as by the Glossary, if VIX is still > 22 at run time. See §8a item 1.
10. Unknowns
- Whether VIX9D/VIX will still be > 1 at the time of tonight's postclose run. VIX has not yet printed > 22.
- The release time of Logan's remarks, and the content of the Cook, Hammack, Barkin, Daly and Musalem remarks, which I didn't verify beyond the Newsquawk schedule. The Waller headline comes only from the Newsquawk feed.
- Why GS/MS underperformed their beta-implied moves by ~1pp. No company or sector news was found.
- Whether the midterms affect bank regulation expectations (not researched; unverified).
- The SO/VST/CEG print dates come from TRAI only. The Lowe's date is marked "tentative" by the company.
- Rate betas are 2026 YTD OLS with no event filter. The rate-day study is not filtered for earnings. Correlations, regime, macro and scorecard data are stale (to 10-22, S-068).

Takeaway: The stress trigger fired at 13:50 (VIX9D/VIX 1.008; VIX 21.79), so size any remaining entries at half risk and stay flat into the weekend. Into Monday, treat HD/LOW as a ~2%/10bp rates position facing ISM at 10:00 and refunding estimates at 15:00. Banks are trading on equity beta, which drags BA, while utilities and MO ride the duration bid.
