2026-11-06 14:00 ET: Memory/storage split under STRESS — MU holds a bounce while the WDC–STX HDD twin fails after Thursday’s ~−17% memory/storage crush (multi-day policy / AI-regulation / memory-cycle headlines — see §7); TSMC 3D-DRAM rumor is MU-relevant, not HDD

Slot: Fri 2026-11-06 14:00 ET hourly research. Status: written ~14:05–14:25 ET (EST); whiggity folded in follow-up ~14:20+ ET (budget-limited reply). Screening/research, not investment advice. No rule is implemented by this report.

Actionable for today's (Fri Nov 6) trading: NO. The live-rule entry window was 10:00 AM EST (60-minute time stop → ~11:00). Afternoon tape under STRESS (VIX still >22) with short_momentum suspended is descriptive only — not a validated fade, bounce, or SM reactivation. Weekend / Mon prep remains the 11:00 gap stack (TTD/KKR/HIMS/OXY/MARA/BRK + CEG BMO).

1. Incremental focus (rotate from 09:00–13:00)

Prior Fri hours covered VST/MRNA/CEG (09:00, 10:00), the Mon gap stack (11:00), industrials HON/UNP/GEV/ETN (S-146, 12:00), and staples/tobacco PM (S-147, 13:00).

This hour rotates to the memory / mass-capacity storage sub-cluster inside TRAI correlation cluster 1 after Thursday’s SMH/memory rout:

  1. MU — DRAM/HBM/NAND (TRAI sector Semis); Thu −17.46% (Yahoo daily); Fri midday ~+5.6%.
  2. WDC / STX — HDD / mass-capacity cloud storage (TRAI Hardware); 60d WDC–STX ρ 0.95 (tightest pair in /api/correlations); Thu −17.35% / −16.25%; Fri midday both still ~−2.2% after a failed early rebound.
  3. Context peers (not primary): SNDK (out of TRAI universe; Thu −22.26%, Fri ~+2.7%), AMD (~+10%), TSM (~+6.2% on 3D-DRAM rumor), IREN (Thu AMC AI-cloud print; Fri ~+20%), SMH (~+3.6%).

2. Live TRAI evidence and clock audit

Read-only API checks returned HTTP 200 around drafting (~14:00–14:05 ET). Linked endpoints are mutable. Sources: latest, events, correlations, regime, scorecard, macro.

Takeaway: Under Friday midday SPY/QQQ green + VIX still >22, MU bounced with cluster-1 compute while the WDC–STX twin stayed red — a within-cluster-1 product split (memory silicon vs mass-capacity HDD), not a single "storage" book. Secondary press that bundled WDC with MU on the TSMC-memory headline is a mechanism mismatch (see §5).

3. Correlation structure vs sector / press labels [TRAI + S-001]

60-day clusters (/api/correlations, asOf 2026-11-05):

NameTRAI sector60d homeNotable pairs
MU, WDC, STX (+ AMD, DELL, VRT, AMAT, …)Semis / HardwareCluster 1 (avg ρ 0.64, n=26)WDC–STX 0.95; WDC–MU 0.79; STX–MU 0.78
Historical note—Older notes used cluster 19 = WDC+STX only (ρ ~0.83 asOf 10-22)Cluster membership migrated: twin still ultra-tight, but both now sit inside the broad AI-infra / semis factor

Fading or chasing "memory/storage" as one residual book after a stress crush is a label error parallel to industrials S-146 and staples S-147. Proposed S-148 below.

4. Business facts and primary catalysts (with citations)

MU — Micron (DRAM / HBM / NAND)

  • Business: semiconductor memory and storage (DRAM incl. HBM, NAND) — Micron IR.
  • Last primary print (not today): FQ4 / FY2026 results, 2026-09-30 — FQ4 revenue $54.23B (vs $41.46B prior qtr / $11.32B YoY); FY26 revenue $133.19B; FQ1-27 guide revenue $61.5B ± $1.5B, non-GAAP diluted EPS $38.15 ± $1.00.
  • Nov 5 8-K (not earnings): director Linnie M. Haynesworth will not stand for re-election; Item 5.02 / 9.01 (SEC 8-K filed 2026-11-05, event date 2026-11-02) — not a guidance reset for Thu’s −17% move.
  • Next earnings: TRAI /api/events 2026-12-23 (estimate). Typical |gap| historically large (prior note ~10% avg |gap| / 1.5 ATR on last 4).
  • Thu–Fri tape driver (secondary, treat as narrative not fact): multi-day stack — Wed midterm/Texas-moratorium/Kioxia (F1/F6), Thu AI-pause headline (F7), plus broad vol; not a single catalyst; Fri bounce also tied to oversold reclaim + jobs print + AI-cloud peer IREN (Motley Fool, 2026-11-06 ~1:19 PM ET; Yahoo Markets live, 2026-11-06). No new MU issuer earnings 8-K explaining the Fri bounce beyond the Sep 30 print.

WDC — Western Digital (HDD / cloud mass capacity post–SanDisk separation)

  • Business: hard-disk drives for cloud/enterprise after flash separation; still linked to storage cycle — WD FQ1'27 release page, 2026-10-22.
  • Last primary print: FQ1 FY27 (period ended 2026-10-02) — prior knowledge note (re-verify on IR): revenue $4.38B (+55% y/y), non-GAAP EPS $4.64, FQ2 guide revenue $5.0–5.2B (same release URL; figures carried from WDC.md — PDF extract from this box failed, so treat table figures as [V-P pending re-pull] if editing later).
  • Fri lag (secondary): early rebound toward ~$288 faded; StreetInsider / Investing.com, 2026-11-06 ~10:25 AM ET cites TSMC memory report + Argus PT $600→$500 (Buy maintained). Argus note itself not opened here — PT path is secondary only.

STX — Seagate (nearline HDD / hyperscale)

  • Business: mass-capacity nearline HDDs to cloud/hyperscale — Seagate IR.
  • Last primary print: FQ1 FY27, 2026-10-27 — revenue $4.2B; non-GAAP GM 57.8%; non-GAAP EPS $7.68; FCF $1.5B; FQ2 guide revenue $4.8B ± $100M, non-GAAP EPS $9.20 ± $0.20 (IR page text verified this hour).
  • Twin behavior: Fri ~−2.2% with WDC despite MU/AMD green — consistent with ρ 0.95 HDD factor, not HBM scarcity narrative.

IREN (context catalyst, Thu AMC) — [V-P]

  • IREN Q1 FY27 results, 2026-11-05: total revenue $228M (+66% seq); AI Cloud revenue $200M; revenue backlog $20.3B (+22% seq); >$4B ARR target fully contracted/funded but timing slipped toward Jan 2027 (may extend to Feb) on customer/supplier timing. Secondary tape links this print to Fri AI-infra bounce (TIKR via Yahoo, 2026-11-06) — correlation claim unverified quantitatively here.

5. TSMC advanced-memory rumor — mechanism check [S]

What was reported: Reuters (citing The Information, 2026-11-06) — TSMC considering 3D DRAM production, reportedly at Nvidia’s request; build-new vs buy-and-convert options; TSMC/Nvidia no immediate comment (Investing.com/Reuters, 2026-11-06 ~10:45 AM).

Who it actually touches:

  • Direct competitive narrative: MU / Samsung / SK hynix (DRAM suppliers). Long-dated and unconfirmed — not a same-day verified capacity add.
  • Wrong bucket if applied to WDC/STX as competitors: HDD makers are not DRAM vendors. Press that "weighs on Western Digital" via a TSMC-DRAM headline is mostly sector-tag spillover, not shared product P&L. Secondary Oct 22 WDC CFO comment (whiggity F5, [S-1]) that HDDs use some DRAM/NAND is a possible input-cost channel — footnote only until primary transcript opened. Prefer ρ + product map (S-001 / S-148) over headline sector lists.
  • Tape: TSM ADR ~+6% midday while WDC/STX red and MU only +5–6% — consistent with foundry optionality bid, not HDD impairment.

6. Typical post-catalyst / gap behavior (TRAI events + priors)

NameNext printHistorical note
MU~12-23 est.Largegaphistory; day-2 after crush is this hour's live case, not a print day
STX~01-26-27 est.Last print 10-27: gap −3.15%, day-1 +7.9% (fill) — already digested
WDCoften missing on events APIData gap for gap-risk flags (prior S-004 / events coverage issue)
AMAT / CSCO11-12 AMCCluster-1 peers — elevated gap-risk into mid-next-week (S-004 / S-132 family)

Aggregate TRAI earnings stats (unchanged philosophy): big |gap| continuation ~50%; do not add drift premium (S-005).

Secondary / open (whiggity-attributed; not [V-P])

  • F2–F4, F9: Kioxia Dec-qtr forecast / "sold out"; SNDK Q1 $11.03B; Micron "75% shipments committed"; STX supply agreements through 2028 — all via secondary 24/7 pages; open until issuer IR/EDGAR opened.
  • F5: WDC CFO (Oct 22, secondary): HDDs use "some DRAM and some NAND" (memory as input cost). Nuances §5: TSMC-DRAM headlines can still hit WDC via cost narrative even when product P&L is HDD — does not make WDC a DRAM competitor. Keep S-148 product split; add cost-spillover as research footnote.
  • F10: opaque Google redirect / "Micron has paused work" — rejected ([UNV]).
  • F11–F12: Argus PT $600→$500 Buy + FactSet mean PT — still secondary; bodies not opened by whiggity ([UNV] on date/primary note).
  • F13 NDX −7.03%: Yahoo QQQ Thu close −6.49% (647.05); do not substitute NDX banner for QQQ. TRAI SPY Thu −4.41% already in §2.
  • Auditor handoffs (fade-long after failed bounce; MU day-2 |gap|; cluster dispersion filter; 60-min stop on day-2 longs; 3-day RV vs 1 ATR): park for 6 PM refinement / S-148 companion tests — not implemented here. No SM reactivation.

Same-day MU/WDC/STX earnings 8-Ks 11-04→11-06 (we opened Micron 5.02 board 8-K only); TSMC official memory statement; Argus primary note; Ansari/Texas primary text.

8. Strategy proposals (for 6 PM refinement — not live)

S-148: Split cluster-1 "memory/storage" risk into HBM/DRAM silicon vs HDD twin (WDC–STX) · PROPOSAL (extends S-001 / S-014 / S-146 / S-147)

  • Rule (proposal): when sizing SM/MR or cluster caps involving MU, WDC, STX (and SNDK as external watch), do not treat them as one residual book. Cap WDC+STX as a ρ≥0.9 twin (currently 0.95); treat MU with other HBM/DRAM / semis factor names (AMD/TSM/AMAT…) separately even though all sit in cluster 1.
  • Companion tests: (1) after a ≥15% same-day crush in MU and WDC/STX, measure next-session MU−WDC and MU−STX return spreads under VIX>22; (2) on TSMC-or-peer DRAM rumor days, test whether WDC/STX co-move with MU or decouple (hypothesis: decouple). Costs, day clustering, OOS, multiple-testing caution.
  • Why (live case): Fri 2026-11-06 ~14:05 — MU ~+5.6%, WDC/STX ~−2.2% after Thu ~−17% each; TSMC 3D-DRAM rumor is MU/TSM narrative, mis-applied to HDD in some secondary headlines.
  • Evidence: this report §2–5, §8.

Evidence adds

  • S-001 / S-014: cluster-1 membership now bundles MU with WDC/STX; product split still required inside the cluster.
  • S-004 / S-132: keep AMAT/CSCO 11-12 AMC on the cluster-1 peer gap-risk calendar; do not size from this afternoon’s bounce.
  • S-005 / S-006: no day-2 LM claim on MU bounce; no fade of Thu’s mega-downs as a live-rule trade after 10:00.
  • S-141 / SM policy: do not reactivate short momentum on failed WDC/STX rebound.
  • S-144: STRESS + front-end inversion still on (midday VIX9D/VIX ~1.08); MR fade-longs remain NEEDS DATA — and MU/WDC/STX were not on the 8:58 MR list anyway.

9. Open questions

  1. Exact Argus WDC note text / date (secondary PT $500 cited only).
  2. Quantitative share of Thu’s crush explained by election/data-center headlines vs vol/ETF flows (needs event study; not done here).
  3. Whether WDC events-API next=null still drops peer gap-risk flags when STX/MU print.
  4. Persistence of MU vs WDC/STX divergence into Mon 11-09 (pre mega-gap night) and into AMAT/CSCO 11-12.
