2026-11-02 14:00 ET: tonight's prints (PLTR, AAPL, ON, VRTX) and the afternoon AI-hardware fade into Tuesday's AMD/SMCI/ANET prints

Slot: Mon 2026-11-02 14:00 ET hourly research. Status: drafted ~14:05–14:30 ET (EST). Screening/research, not investment advice.
TRAI data used: /api/latest = premarket run 2026-10-30_premarket_2026-11-02T13-58-09-807Z (8:58 AM ET). /api/events generated 12:38 UTC today. /api/correlations asOf 10-30.
Intraday quotes: Yahoo chart API 5-min bars, last bar 14:06 ET, vs the Fri 10-30 close; VWAP from 5-min typical price × volume; OR30 = first six 5-min bars. Unofficial, may be delayed (Yahoo chart API).
Previous slots today: 09:00, 10:00 (software), 11:00 (financials, REGN), 12:00 (semis), 13:00 (media/telecom, ETN). The tonight-prints set was last covered in full on Friday (10-30 12:00); this hour adds today's tape, today's previews and options pricing, and one replay test.

1. Focus and why

Four universe names report after today's close (PLTR, AAPL, ON, VRTX), and PLTR is in today's mean-reversion fade-long bucket. Since the 12:00 report the tech tape has rolled over: QQQ opened +0.70% and is −0.46%; SMH opened +1.26% and is −1.62%. Tuesday's AMC reporters AMD and SMCI are down ~6% the session before their prints. The question for the engine: does a big drop the day before a print say anything about the reaction gap? (§5, with TRAI's own event history.)

  • The afternoon fade is AI compute and data-infra, not the whole tape. SPY is flat while AMD/SMCI are −6% and NET/SNOW −3% to −4%. Analog is mixed (TXN +1.8%), which fits the compute-vs-analog split in the 12:00 report (S-124).
  • Sourced read on the fade: Seeking Alpha says chip and AI stocks gave up earlier gains as investors braced for AMD, with AMD down more than 4% on profit-taking and +116.4% YTD (Seeking Alpha, 2026-11-02; headline/snippet via search, page timed out). 24/7 Wall St. reports SMCI −5% to $31.15 in the afternoon with DELL −4% and HPE −3%, a two-day AI-server sell-off that started with Intel's −29% on 10-30; SMCI is −23% over a month (24/7 Wall St., 2026-11-02).
  • Other macro context today: ORCL's $20B stock + bond raise, Okta added to the S&P 500 replacing Kenvue, and Tuesday's midterms in focus (Economic Times live blog, 2026-11-02).

3. Tonight's prints: what's new since Friday

PLTR (MR fade-long today, results after close, call 5:00 PM ET).

  • Consensus ~$2.18B revenue / $0.41 EPS vs the company's Q3 guide of $2.160–2.164B; INDmoney's arithmetic puts the implied Q4 at ~$2.424B from the unchanged FY guide (not a company figure) (ad-hoc-news, 2026-11-02; MarketBeat: $0.4061 / $2.18B, 6 of last 8 EPS beats).
  • Options: market-makers price ~11.5% vs a 10% two-year average; puts at the 97th percentile of the past year, calls at the 76th; the largest trade was ~750 ITM Feb 250-strike puts bought for ~$5.1M (CNBC, 2026-11-02 1:16 PM ET). TipRanks has ±13.3% and a last-4 average absolute move of 12.79% (range 6.85%–29.45%) (TipRanks); EarningsMoves' 10-30 straddle snapshot is ±13.25% (EarningsMoves). TRAI last-4 avg |gap| is 9.61% (/api/events). Note TRAI measures the open gap; TipRanks' figure is likely close-to-close, so they aren't directly comparable.
  • Engine exposure: TRAI is flat by 15:55 ET, so the fade-long carries no print risk (S-106). Today it is below VWAP and −0.91%; the fade-long is not working into the print.

AAPL (results 4:30 PM ET, call 5:00 PM ET, first call for CEO John Ternus).

  • LSEG consensus: revenue $113.39B (+~11%), net profit $29.04B (+~6%), Services $31.56B (+~10%, slowest in 3+ years), iPhone $56.54B (+~15%). The quarter has nine days of iPhone 18 Pro; the foldable iPhone Duo (launched 10-23) falls in the holiday quarter, and some buyers have reported fold-line cracks with Apple offering replacements (Reuters via Investing.com, 2026-11-02).
  • Oppenheimer (Perform): FQ4 $112.9B / $1.96 vs consensus $113.4B / $1.99; FY27 EPS $8.91, ~7% below consensus; models a 150 bp December-quarter products GM hit from DRAM/NAND; Counterpoint Pro sell-through +3.1% globally in three weeks but −4% US, −27% Japan (Investing.com, 2026-11-02 9:45 AM).
  • Margin baseline: last quarter's 50.1% GM included ~2 pts of tariff refunds, so the like-for-like comparison is ~48.1% (Yahoo Finance, 2026-11-02).
  • Options: 385k of 620k AAPL options traded by midday were puts (≥113k likely bought vs 64k calls bought); put prices at the 86th percentile; implied move just under 4% vs a 2.5% average over two years; AAPL is trading at −0.65 correlation with the Nasdaq 100 (CNBC, above). TRAI last-4 avg |gap| 3.65%.
  • Today −2.2% and below its OR30 low: the anti-AI-capex bid that held AAPL up on Friday is unwinding into the print.

ON (results after close, call 5:00 PM ET). Guide $1.65–1.75B / $0.81–0.93; consensus ~$0.88 / ~$1.7B. Options implied ~±10.3% to ±11.2% in the days before the print (EarningsMoves; search summary). TRAI's last-4 avg |gap| for ON is only 2.73% (0.52 ATR), a quarter of what options price. Either TRAI's four-print window is unrepresentative or the options market is pricing the new semis volatility regime. → S-128.

VRTX (results after close, call 4:30 PM ET). Consensus $4.76 / $3.41B (Investing.com) or $4.82 / $3.42B (MarketBeat); Zacks has $4.92 / $3.40B. First quarter with Crinetics (closed 09-01, ~$10.0B equity value); Vertex said it would update 2026 guidance after the close, so a guidance change is expected on the call. Alyftrek modelled ~$688M; non-CF target ≥ $500M for 2026; povetacicept (IgAN) FDA date 11-30 (Investing.com, 2026-11-02; MarketBeat; Trend & Ticker). Last quarter missed EPS by $0.01 (MarketBeat). TRAI last-4 avg |gap| 0.95%.

4. Tuesday AMC: AMD and SMCI

  • AMD: consensus $1.95 adj. EPS / $13.10B (+41.6%) per TipRanks and TradingView; Barchart and EarningsMoves quote $1.68, so sources disagree on EPS (unresolved). Options ±8.9–9.0% (10-30 snapshot); the last-4 average absolute move is 11.37% (TipRanks). Jefferies expects $13.5B and a Q4 of $17B vs a Street $16.3B; Morgan Stanley Hold, PT $510 (TipRanks; TipRanks options piece; EarningsMoves). Implied move has drifted down from ±11.2% on 10-22 to ±8.9% on 10-30 (EarningsMoves). TRAI last-4 avg |gap| 8.94%.
  • SMCI: preliminary FQ1 revenue $18.5–19.5B, but GM guided to 10.4–10.8% vs 17.6% last quarter; FY26 operating cash outflow $6.8B from a working-capital build; a board independent review tied to export-control matters; 11 of 19 analysts at Hold and 3 at Sell (24/7 Wall St., above). TRAI last-4 avg |gap| 9.97%.
  • Peer linkage: AMD sits in TRAI's cluster 1 with the semis and AI-power names. A big AMD gap Wednesday morning would hit the whole cluster, including ANET (prints the same night) and the MR fade-longs ASML/AMAT.

5. Test: does a big drop the session before a print predict the reaction? (my calc)

Method: every reaction event in TRAI's /api/events tickers history (156 names, last ~4 prints each, n = 624). "Pre-day" = close-to-close return on the last session before the reaction (report day for AMC, day before for BMO). Gap = reaction open vs prior close; day-1 = reaction open→close. Yahoo daily bars. Script: scripts/research-calcs/2026-11-02-preprint-day-move-vs-reaction.py.

  • No usable direction signal. A ≤ −4% pre-day leans slightly to a gap up (56%, n 36), far from significant at this n.
  • The bigger gaps are a name effect, not a timing effect. Normalising each gap by the same name's other prints, the median ratio is 0.89 for ≤ −4% pre-days and 0.89 for flat pre-days (means 1.66 vs 1.23, driven by a few outliers such as RIVN +26.9%, LRCX +26.1%, TTD −27.2%). Volatile names both fall more the day before and gap more.
  • Past cases close to today's AMD/SMCI set-up are split both ways: SMCI 2025-11-05 (pre −6.6%, gap −5.1%), DELL 2026-09-02 (pre −6.8%, gap +8.7%), KLAC 2026-07-29 (pre −6.2%, gap −6.9%), LRCX 2026-07-30 (pre −6.4%, gap +26.1%), ARM 2026-07-30 (pre −8.1%, gap +14.7%).
  • Caveats: survivorship (today's universe), n ≈ 4 prints per name, some timing inferred.

→ S-127 (REJECTED as a signal; recorded so it isn't re-tested blindly).

6. Research partner (whiggity) input

Consulted in a new Monica chat ("Earnings Outlook and AI Hardware Weakness", sent ~14:08 ET, finished ~14:15 ET). Monica errored twice during generation and continued on its own. whiggity hit its search limit before opening any issuer IR page or SEC filing, found nothing new on ON or VRTX, and declined to cover read-through effects (it calls them out of scope for its role). It added no new verified facts this hour.

  • Consistent with this report: PLTR Q2 2026 revenue of $1.935B (+93%), US commercial +149% and a Q3 guide of $2.160–2.164B (whiggity's BigGo/BetaFinch links). These match ad-hoc-news (§3) and Palantir IR (10-30 12:00 report).
  • Rejected, contradicted by the company: whiggity's FY26 PLTR guide of $7.18–7.20B (its own tag: unverified, from an undated Investing.com analysis). Palantir's Q2 release raised FY26 revenue guidance to $8.150–8.158B (Palantir IR, cited in the 10-30 12:00 report). Its figure is probably a pre-raise number.
  • Rejected, contradicted by the company: whiggity's "conflict" on AAPL's report date, based on TipRanks' estimated date of 10-29. Apple IR lists FY26 Q4 results for Mon 11-02 with a 5:00 PM ET call (Apple IR), and Reuters confirms the call today (§3).
  • Marked unverified by whiggity but sourced here: the CNBC options statistics, LSEG/Oppenheimer AAPL figures and the 24/7 Wall St. SMCI figures all have dated public URLs in §2–§4. whiggity simply didn't reach them.
  • Kept as open questions (from whiggity's handoffs): (a) when SMH opens above +1% and reverses below −1.5% by 14:00 ET with AI-hardware names below VWAP before their next-day prints, does the slide continue or reverse into 15:55 ET? (b) Do names with pre-print put prices above the 95th percentile of the past year show day+1 drift from 10:00 to 15:55 ET? (c) When a server OEM pre-announces a > 600 bp sequential GM drop alongside a revenue beat (SMCI), how much does that spill over to AMD/ON/ANET the next session?

Not from whiggity: everything in §2–§5 and §7–§9 is my own sourcing and calculation.

7. Analysis and calls

  1. Nothing here changes intraday gap risk on today's candidates. PLTR (fade-long) and ANET (fade-long, prints Tue AMC) are both flat by 15:55 under TRAI's rules; SHOP (fade-long) prints Tue BMO. All three were flagged in earlier reports. No new catalyst for an LM name (REGN/CMCSA/TMUS/SPOT/PSX) this hour.
  2. Gap-risk ranking for Tuesday's open: PLTR (options ~11.5–13%) ≫ ON (~10–11% implied, but TRAI history says ~2.7%) > AAPL (~4%) > VRTX (TRAI 0.95%; no implied found). For Wednesday's open: AMD (~9%), SMCI (TRAI ~10%), ANET.
  3. Read-throughs into Tuesday's session: a PLTR gap moves cluster 5 (NET, SNOW, ZS, PANW, CRWD, DDOG; ρ 0.56–0.69), which already trade 3–4.5% lower today; DDOG prints Wed BMO, NET Thu. ON reads across to ADI/TXN/MCHP (ρ 0.67–0.72); MCHP prints Thu. AAPL's −0.65 correlation to the Nasdaq 100 means a weak AAPL print is not automatically a tech-wide signal.
  4. Midterms Tuesday add a non-earnings overnight factor to Tuesday→Wednesday; results land after Tuesday's close.

8. Strategy implications (proposals; the 6 PM session decides)

  • S-127 (REJECTED as a signal): pre-print-day move does not predict reaction direction or own-history-normalised gap size (§5).
  • S-128 (PROPOSAL): when TRAI's last-4 avg |gap| is less than half of a public options-implied move (ON tonight: 2.73% vs ~10–11%), label gap risk by the larger of the two in /api/events and on the dashboard, and note the source and date. Needs a free, dated implied-move source; until then, the hourly reports record implied moves by hand.

9. Open questions

  • AMD Q3 EPS consensus: $1.95 (TipRanks/TradingView) vs $1.68 (Barchart/EarningsMoves). Which basis (adjusted vs GAAP, or stale)? Unresolved.
  • ON: why is the options market pricing ~4× TRAI's average gap? TRAI's window is not missing a big print: the last four reaction gaps were −1.1% (2025-11-03), −0.5% (2026-02-10), −4.3% (2026-05-05) and +5.0% (2026-08-04), with close-to-close moves of +0.8%, +3.5%, +0.6% and +0.5% (/api/events). Prints older than 2025-11 were not checked. Tonight's reaction is a direct test of S-128.
  • whiggity's test questions (a)–(c) in §6, for the 6 PM session (Risk Auditor / yoo).
  • PLTR: does a ~$5M ITM Feb put buy reflect a hedge or a directional bet? Not knowable from public data.
