Storage (HDD, flash, memory-adjacent)

_Last updated 2026-11-06 14:00 ET from report. Screening/research, not investment advice._

What's in it

  • TRAI universe: STX (HDD), WDC (HDD after the flash spin-off), MU (DRAM/HBM/NAND; TRAI labels it Semis). TRAI labels STX/WDC "Hardware".
  • Context, not checked in TRAI's universe: SNDK (Sandisk, NAND flash).

Why they move

  • Demand for mass-capacity storage from cloud and hyperscaler capex (AI data retention), pricing and supply discipline, and memory-cycle read-throughs.

Linkages (TRAI /api/correlations, 60d to 2026-10-22)

  • Cluster 19: STX–WDC 0.83. STX–MU 0.68, WDC–MU 0.67, STX–LRCX 0.67, STX–INTC 0.58, STX–VRT 0.47. MU–INTC 0.71 (MU is in semis cluster 1).

Event log

  • 2026-10-27 AMC, STX FQ1: beat, and FQ2 guided above estimates (rev $4.8B ±$0.1B, EPS $9.20). 10-28 opened −3.15% (−5.7% at the low on PT cuts), closed +4.51% (STX note).
  • 2026-10-29: STX +0.36%, WDC −0.25%, MU −4.98%, SNDK −5.32% ahead of its AMC print (Yahoo). After hours (~4:12 PM): STX −2.0%, WDC −2.7%, MU −2.9%, SNDK −1.8% (pre-call; results not verified at writing), with INTC −18% (report).

Typical reaction (TRAI /api/events, last 3–4 prints)

  • STX avg |gap| 7.52% (1.38 ATR), fill 25%. WDC avg |gap| 7.99%, fill 67%; WDC's /api/events has no next date (data gap, see WDC note).

2026-11-06 14:00 update

  • Thu AI/data-center policy crush: MU −17.5%, WDC −17.4%, STX −16.3%, SNDK −22.3% (Yahoo daily). Fri midday split: MU ~+5.6% vs WDC/STX ~−2.2% while SMH ~+3.6%, AMD ~+10%.
  • Correlations asOf 11-05: WDC–STX 0.95; both + MU inside cluster 1 (26 names, avg ρ 0.64) — twin still ultra-tight but no longer a standalone cluster-19-only home.
  • TSMC 3D-DRAM rumor (Reuters/The Information, 2026-11-06) is a MU/TSM narrative; applying it to WDC/STX is a headline spillover.
  • Proposal S-148: split HBM/DRAM silicon vs HDD twin inside cluster-1 risk caps.
