AI power & data-center infrastructure (theme)
_Last updated 2026-11-06 09:00 ET from report. Screening/research, not investment advice._
What's in it
- TRAI universe: GEV (gas/nuclear/wind generation + grid), ETN (electrical distribution), VRT (data-center power and cooling), ANET (data-center networking), VST and CEG (independent power producers; TRAI labels them "Materials/Utilities"), CAT (Power & Energy gensets/turbines — see industrials). Sector labels: TRAI /api/latest.
- Context, not in the universe: BE (Bloom Energy, on-site fuel cells), PWR (Quanta), contractors MTZ/DY/PRIM.
Linkages (TRAI /api/correlations, 60d to 2026-10-22)
- GEV, ETN, VRT, ANET and CAT are in cluster 1 with the semis (24 names, avg ρ 0.588). VST/CEG are cluster 18 (ρ 0.836).
- Pairs: GEV–ETN 0.82, VRT–ETN 0.81, ANET–ETN 0.78, GEV–CAT 0.74, GEV–VRT 0.73, CAT–ETN 0.73, GEV–VST 0.60, GEV–CEG 0.59, GEV–NVDA 0.52. Defensive mirror: JNJ–GEV −0.49.
- TRAI's clusterFlag (sector-label based) does not tag GEV or VST with the rest of the group (S-023).
- Out-of-universe peers suggested by whiggity (12:00 consult; co-movement checked by me, mechanisms unverified): VST with TLN (60d ρ 0.81), NRG (0.79) and CEG (0.84). whiggity's claimed drivers (PJM capacity auctions, PPAs, FERC co-location rulings, spark spreads) are unverified. GEV with NVT 0.88, PWR 0.82, MOD 0.67, TT 0.56. VRT with NVT 0.81, TT 0.68. ANET with CIEN 0.71, COHR 0.63, FN 0.62 (AVGO 0.51, NVDA 0.49). Oct 22: NVT −12.63%, COHR −12.51%, FN −10.78%, CIEN −10.71%, MOD −9.75%, PWR −8.10%, TLN −7.81%, NRG −5.43%, TT −4.80% (Yahoo daily, my calc; report §8).
- Customers: hyperscaler capex (META, MSFT, GOOGL, AMZN). Regulated utilities (NEE) rose on Oct 22 while merchant/AI power fell (Kalkine, 2026-10-23).
Event log
- 2026-10-28 → 10-29 (earnings week; [report](../reports/2026-10-29-1600-ai-infra-capex-financing.md)): VRT beat and raised (Q3 sales +61%, organic orders >100%, FY26 guide +$650M), +16.48% on 10-28, +1.24% on 10-29. PWR beat and raised (backlog $63.7B, +62.6%), about +6%. TT beat but reaffirmed FY below consensus (backlog +73%, >90% of mega-projects are data centers), −4.8%. GEV +1.15% and ETN +0.19% on 10-29 while semis fell 2%. Hyperscaler capex not cut: GOOGL $195–205B (higher in 2027), AMZN ~$220B, META $135–145B. MSFT capex came in below estimates. The selloff is about funding and FCF (GOOGL FCF −$9.07B, META ~$97.5B raise, ORCL $20B raise cap, INTC $23B equity). After hours 10-29 (~4:12 PM): VRT −3.9%, ETN −1.6%, ANET −1.8% on INTC −18% / AMZN −7 to −9%.
- Base rate (my calc): after a ≥+10% day in 17 AI-infra names, next open→close averages −1.00% since 2024 (n 161, t −2.68), with day 2 +0.47%. TRAI replay: long_momentum on earnings-reaction days −0.56% net (n 48) vs +0.13% non-event (S-066).
- 2026-10-22: theme unwind with semis: GEV −10.64%, VST −9.81%, VRT −7.81%, ANET −7.19%, ETN −6.33%, CEG −5.74% (TRAI); MTZ/DY/PRIM at 52-week lows (Kalkine, above). See the 09:00 report.
- 2026-10-23: lows in the 9:35 bar, back to flat by noon (ANET +2.1%); BE −11.5% after a beat-and-raise on −$181M FCF / 4× capex (Seeking Alpha, 2026-10-23) (report §2).
