Consumer / retail: home improvement and general merchandise (theme)
_Last updated 2026-10-30 09:00 ET from report. Screening/research, not investment advice._
What's in it (TRAI universe)
- Home improvement: HD, LOW (TRAI: Consumer Disc.). They trade as one: HD–LOW ρ 0.92, cluster 12 with MCD (avg ρ 0.65).
- General merchandise: TGT (TRAI: Consumer Staples), a singleton (cluster 57). Top links are NKE 0.50, BX 0.50 and PG/PEP 0.45. TGT–WMT is only 0.24. WMT–COST form cluster 26 (ρ 0.65).
- AMZN is labeled Consumer Disc., but HD–AMZN ρ 0.00 and LOW–AMZN −0.10. The engine's sector flag ("Consumer Disc. ×3": HD, AMZN, LOW) groups names that don't co-move (TRAI /api/latest, /api/correlations asOf 2026-10-22).
- Average ρ to the core-semis basket (NVDA, AMD, AVGO, MU, TSM, ASML, AMAT, LRCX, KLAC) is negative: HD −0.22, LOW −0.24, TGT −0.23.
Why they move
- Rates: lower mortgage rates help home sales and remodeling and make it easier to tap home equity (Kalkine, 2026-10-23). UMich (Oct final): durables buying conditions −18% "on the basis of higher interest rates and rising concerns about the affordability" (UMich, 2026-10-23).
- Rotation: on risk-off/AI-selloff days, money moved into staples, health care and housing-linked names (Oct 22).
Event log
- 2026-10-22: 10y −17 bp to 4.972%, the biggest one-day drop since March 2023 (CNBC). HD +4.33, LOW +3.97, TGT +3.76 with no company news. All three became mean-reversion fade-short candidates on Oct 23 (TRAI /api/latest).
- 2026-10-23: hot flash-PMI prices (investingLive) and higher UMich inflation expectations. 10y back to ~4.99%. HD −2.71, LOW −2.76, TGT −2.82, XHB −1.79 at 10:14 ET (Yahoo chart API).
Upcoming catalysts
- HD 11-17 BMO; LOW 11-18 BMO; TGT 11-18 BMO; WMT 11-19 BMO (TRAI /api/events). Macro: FOMC decision Oct 28, GDP/PCE Oct 29 (9 AM report).
Typical reaction (last 4; TRAI /api/events)
- HD avg |gap| 2.81% (1.22 ATR). LOW 2.96% (1.24 ATR). TGT 3.37% (1.20 ATR). Fill rate 50% each. WMT 4.16% (2.11 ATR), fill 25%.
Sympathy map: whiggity consult vs TRAI data
- whiggity named SHW/TSCO/WMT as yield/duration proxies for HD/LOW. SHW and TSCO are not in TRAI's universe (unverified). WMT links are weak: HD 0.41, LOW 0.33, TGT 0.24 (TRAI /api/correlations 60d). The rates link is sourced (CNBC/Kalkine above), but the peer basket is not.
- Oct 23 10:25 ET: HD −2.85%, LOW −2.94%, TGT −3.00% as the 10y returned to ~4.99% (Yahoo chart API). See S-016 for the Regime A/B question (consult).
